Tim Thomas is taking his next step in his return to the NHL.
The 39-year-old Thomas has agreed to a camp tryout with the Florida Panthers, a source told ESPN.com on Monday morning.
Details were still being finalized, so the deal is not yet official yet. But Thomas had decided to give it a go with Florida, according to the source.
Thomas, the 2011 Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP, took last season off from the NHL. The star goaltender announced via his representation in early July that he was going to explore the market for a possible comeback.
However, Thomas wasn't flooded with offers this offseason, as clubs have been concerned about the netminder taking a year away from hockey at his age.
Jacob Markstrom, 23, took over as Florida's starter last season and certainly is viewed as the franchise's goalie of the future. But the Panthers want to add some experience in net. Veteran journeyman backup Scott Clemmensen is also on Florida's roster.
If Thomas can prove he can still play at this level, the Panthers could sign him to an NHL contract.
