Shawn Michaels v. The Undertaker from WrestleMania 25 holds up incredibly well. I've never seen it on the big screen and in HD where I can kick back and watch the damn match. Better now than never, I s'pose.

Pre-match promo package is great. Entrances are elite. Opening stage of the match is well laid out with the speed-power dynamic being played with, with the Undertaker eventually taking control at the start of the middle portion of the match only each to go back and forth with a distinct focus for each. Michaels working Taker's leg and using his speed while Taker just going power power power. It builds to the point where each wrestler gets more desperate to put the other away, including when Michaels wants to get a win via countout. Also, with Taker doing some of Michaels signature moves. Things feel a little more organic in this match while in those subsequent Undertaker Mania matches seem a bit more contrived (especially in those HHH matches when watched on repeat).

Execution of the match is great. The few botches (Undertaker going face first into the floor when he dove over the top, for example) add to the match's charm and are very well covered up by both guys. Only real knocks for me, some of the key spots needed to be a little more crisp and the ending was a bit flat.

It tells a story while still being a wrestling match. In the second Taker/Michaels match and subsequent Taker/HHH matches, they rely too much on story telling over the actual in ring action and rip off a ton of concepts from this match and just stretch'em out. In that regard, the match is incredibly influencial in the WWE bubble.

Jim Ross was great on commentary, too.

This is one of those matches I'd give ****1/2 to every single time.

25 is no doubt better than 26, and 26 blows away the Triple H matches imo.

The famous Flair/Kerry Von Erich 1982 cage match is up in the Vault. In fact, just about the entire build for that can be watched in order now (they are missing a couple of eps). This of course was the famous angle that sparked the molten hot period for World Class. I won't spoil if somebody wants to watch with fresh eyes. Just watch the World Class eps in order.

The Triple H matches are pretty tough to watch a second time to round. I can still recognize they were good, but they were too much about the story telling...especially the second one. The first one, too...there are matches in Triple H's career that try too hard to make him look like a bad ass...that was one of them.

In retrospect...one thing about Triple H's career that bugs me...the best characters are guys who have their own personality turned up to 100. Triple H is not a bad ass. Not even a little bit. Yet, most of his career, he has projected himself as some ultimo-hombre, especially as he has gotten older. Those Brock matches are fuckin brutal watches based on that fact alone. No way in hell could a softy juice head like Triple H hang with Brock for five minutes, let alone these epic battles with a former UFC champ.

His whole gimmick just seems disingenuous to me.

And this is coming from an era that has a 70 year old-looking, former zombie with faux MMA skillz as the most badass character in the company and I can buy it every time.

I'll gladly say that I haven't "got" any of Trips' career, minus his matches with Foley. And thats more on Foley making him look good. His matches wiyh Austin stunk, his matches with UT I thought were HIGHLY overrated, even his matches with HBK or Angle weren't that good. Was only ok with The Rock. Force-fed to the topeven before inheriting the company. And yeah, he wants to be made to look like 100x more badass than Brock or Regal or any guys who are actual bad dudes. It comes off as serious overcompensation, even by wrestling standards.

Give a guy a sledgehammer, and I guess that immediately makes him a bad ass

I like Triple H, I really do, but it became forced around the middle of last decade, and then he was getting main events for him based solely off of who he was to Vince. Nothing sticks out, and the whole Legacy against the McMahons and then DX was awful.

At least this WM, Danielson will carry him to a classic and we will forget about it for a time. But matches involving H's hold up very poorly.

Too bad this award is defunct, it could be dedicated to Fuji like the Flair/Thesz & Brody awards.
