Whoever the next guy is, I think they're going to take a hatchet to this roster.

I'm surprised that he was sacked in less than a season.

I'm also surprised at just how hopeless the situation became, so I don't blame the club for pulling the trigger. Obviously this is just one of United's problems sorted out though. They need to improve at the executive level. By my count United missed out on four prime targets this season (Baines, Fabregas, Herrera, Coentrao) and that's not mostly Moyes' fault. Especially when you look at the guff in the squad currently and the need to get better and younger in the starting lineup and the reserves, they can't be missing out on all their top targets or they will become stagnant.

I think they will struggle to find the right manager as well actually. I said at the time that they had a once in a lifetime opportunity to get Mourinho and should have at least pursued that, but he's not an option anymore and neither are some of the unrealistic targets touted in the media. Guardiola and Ancelotti are not going to leave where they are for a team in decline. Klopp (who would have been absolutely perfect) seems to have genuinely ruled himself out. Van Gaal is a pretty good choice, but he's semi-retired. Does he have the energy to succeed with such a transformational challenge? One thing is for sure, they won't be selecting Ryan Giggs.
