Hurricanes hire Bill Peters away from Detroit

The Carolina Hurricanes' search for a new coach is complete. On Thursday they announced the hiring of Bill Peters to take over behind the bench.

Peters, 48, is just the fourth coach in Hurricanes history (13th in franchise history) and will take over for Kirk Muller in his first NHL head-coaching job. For the past three seasons he has been an assistant for the Detroit Red Wings.

In addition to Carolina, Peters was believed to be a strong candidate for the Pittsburgh Penguins' vacancy as well as being a finalist for the Panthers. In the end it is the Hurricanes that get him.

Before joining the Red Wings, Peters was the head coach for the Rockford Icehogs in the AHL where he helped with the developemtn of the eventual Stanley Cup-winning Blackhawks. Prior to that Peters was the coach of the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL where he won the Memorial Cup.

In Carolina he's getting a team that has some top-line talent but has struggled in the past couple of years to put it all together, especially on defense. There certainly is potential to get the ship turned around in Carolina in a hurry.

Not a bad hire at all, hopefully for him Francis can get the roster straightened out. They could be a force again very quickly.

Red Wings have to be getting tired of having coaches just poached from them. They almost lost their AHL guy if it wasn't for the team blocking any requests to him for an interview lol.

Usually if it's a promotion you can't block the coach from leaving/interviewing. I know it's tiring, but when you've had the success they have had, other franchises are looking in your direction. It means you are doing something right.

Vancouver sent a request to interview him and the team declined. I think they just signed him last year to a 3 year deal so he's there for at least 2 more years.
