2013 NFL Draft Random Thoughts

Hankins is an absolute monster. He's huge and strong but insanely quick. One of my most vivid memories of 2011 is against Colorado when he chased down a tailback on a screen pass across the field. He'll be a fantastic pro.

Tennessee State junior RB Trabis Ward has declared for the 2013 NFL Draft.

Every year, some draft-eligible prospects surprise and forgo their final season of college football, and an FCS talent like Ward certainly fits this category. We have yet to watch a second of Ward, but he rushed for 1,422 yards and 15 touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry.

Meaning it won't be so close. Not if they come back and Aaron Murray stays. I believe Murray turned a corner this year. He is getting better and better against top teams. Not saying he is great against them, but he is coming around.

West Virginia receiver Tavon Austin, who finished eighth in this year's Heisman voting and was an AP All-American, has agreed to play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 26 in Mobile, Ala., a source confirmed.

Mountaineers quarterback Geno Smith is considering an offer to join Austin at the game, which concludes a week of workouts in front of NFL scouts.

No other WVU seniors have been invited, the source said, though the game's roster won't be finalized until after the bowls.

Austin's 110 catches rank No. 2 nationally behind USC sophomore Marqise Lee. His 230 all-purpose yards per game stand No. 2 behind Western Kentucky's Antonio Andrews.

Rutgers senior TE D.C. Jefferson will attend the East-West Shrine Game.

Jefferson is likely draftable on his frame alone, but the senior could really improve his evaluation with a consistent week. He only recorded 18 receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown, most of which occurred in the red zone, but Jefferson's blend of height and athletic ability is intriguing.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen announced Monday that WR Stedman Bailey will forego his senior season and enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

West Virginia QB Geno Smith's high school teammate, Bailey racked up 106 catches for 1,501 yards and 23 touchdowns in a prolific junior season. Although Bailey is listed at just 5-foot-10, 188, his playing style more closely resembles that of a "pro-style" perimeter receiver than explosive Mountaineers slot man Tavon Austin. Austin and Bailey will both almost certainly be top-100 draft picks in April. Austin, a 5-foot-9, 174-pound senior, finished the 2012 regular season with a receiving stat line of 110-1,259-12.

Illinois junior DT Akeem Spence will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter April's NFL Draft.

Spence is expected to make his announcement on Friday. The junior entered the 2012 season highly thought of due to powerful hands and enough foot quickness to make plays in the backfield, but too often he failed to make an impact in games. The entire Illini defense struggled this season despite plenty of individual talent. We expect a second day selection for Spence, but an early third day pick is not out of the question if terms are concerned about his effort this season.
