Ya that would be a solid trade for both, but that would put the Mets back at square 1 wouldn't it? They'd have the big bat they've wanted but then their future pitching takes a hit. I think they'd be better off just keeping those guys and splurging in free agency on a guy like Ellsbury, Granderson, or Choo.

When have the Mets had a big bat like Big Mike though? Wheeler would be tough to deal, I do admit.

Before the start of the season, the Mets and Marlins talked about Stanton. The Marlins wanted Wheeler and d'Arnaud.

FWIW...I'd make that trade. I think Wheeler will be special, but Stanton is special, too. If I could sign Big Mike to a zillion year contract, I'd do that trade immediately if I were the Mets.

This is from an April NYDN blog post....when Andy Martino suggested that trade to an unnamed Mets official:

Don't think Wheeler and d'Arnaud is enough to get Giancarlo, truthfully. d'Arnaud is getting pretty old in prospect terms, he's older than the guy he'd be traded for, for one. Hell, Stanton is only 5 months older than Wheeler, even.

Don't think the Marlins are dealing a 23 year old superstar without getting bulk and upside. Getting two "close to the majors" 'spects who are the same age as Stanton, no matter how good they may be, isn't going to make enough of a dent in their overall future to justify the PR hit that comes with shipping out your best player.

Would think they'd be seeking a haul of 3-4 younger guys with upside, two of the A variety and two of the B-C variety. The Alaberto Mondesi, Jurickson Profar type 'spect is who they should be looking to headline a package in their ideal scenario.

In sum, that deal would be great for the Mets, but doesn't make much sense for the Marlins given their current stage of rebuilding.

The thing that concerns me about Marcum, and probably the reason he is being BABIP'd to death is his groundball % is down almost 8% this year from his career average. And if he moves to a smaller park, that HR rate will go up. Factor in the arm issues, he's not someone teams are going to be giving up anything notable for.

Marcum's peripheral numbers are very good, but the acquisition would likely be rejected by the fans a GM is trying to service with such a move. Also remember that Marcum played his entire career up to this point in Toronto and Milwaukee, the Guido's of the world probably have never heard of him before.

Yeah, Dave Cameron has been insisting for weeks on FanGraphs chats that the Braves acquire Garza as a "top of the rotation" addition. Forgetting that the Braves already have 5 equal or better starters, and are about to add a 6th after the break, how the fuck is Garza a top of the rotation guy? 103 ERA+ for his career.

It has more to do with how he's looking healthy than anything. You know what you're getting with Garza, but if he's looking healthy there's plenty of teams that could use him. Jim Bowden was a GM and he's a fucking god damn idiot.
