It's stuff like this with Morelli though that really makes me wonder why he's still allowed to ref games.
When Pittsburgh upset Indianapolis in 05, there was a play where the Steeler's left tackle jumped before the snap and Dwight Freeney, with some other colts I might add, jumped offsides in that way so many defensive lineman do when they see an offensive lineman move. Morelli stopped the action, called no penalty on either team, and started the game again.
I still can't wrap my head around this. If the tackle didn't jump, Freeney and half of the Colt defense should have been called for offside (In the replay we saw that the tackle did jump). That play was extremely significant because it was a 4th and inches play, and because that penalty wasn't called Cowher decided to go for it and succeeded. I doubt he would have still gone for it on a 4th and 5 the way the Colts were storming back that half. However when I think about that game even more, the play most people remember is the Polamalu interception that was reversed even though he obviously caught the ball. Things like that make me believe that Morelli is more incompetent than he is crooked, but regardless, he should never be calling playoff games.
