If they go with the popularity route then definitely Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Jay-Z.

We are past the days of musical acts being iconic in the same vein as the past. The golden age of popular music is long gone. 40 years from now, I highly doubt people will be listening to stuff like Kanye West, Lady Gaga, or Justin Timberlake the same way people today still listen to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, or Elvis. Music is not held to the same standards today. Its cheap, manufactured, and disposable. Pop, and the most commercially successful genre today, rap/hip hop, is full of "here today, gone tommorow" drivel that people were embarrassed to admit they liked 6 months ago, let alone 40 years from now.

Somehow, I don't think Lil' Wayne will transcend the test of time. Sorry. We are all unfotunate enough to be part of the MP3/digital/short attention span era. We aren't even patient enough to buy a record and listen to the entire thing, what makes anyone think we are building icons?

Yep. Three classic albums, one of the greatest producers in hip-hop history already and he still a long career ahead of him...there's no doubt in my mind that Kanye will be remembered 40 years from now as one of the greatest artists of our generation.

Anyone who disagrees either is a huge Kanye hater or believes all rap music sounds the "same". He's already had a huge impact in the game today.

As far as Kanye goes I don't even think it has anything to do with your opinion on his music.


I definitely don't think he's the best of our generation, but when it comes to pop music that comes on the top 40 I don't think there's any question. Also how many people of this generation have not heard a Kanye West album? Then you can't escape the news from all the stupid stuff he does.

Even if his music is "here today, gone tomorrow" and completely irrelevant in 40 years. I see no reason why he wont be remembered.

I am not a fan of The Beatles, and off the top of my head I can probably name 30.

Kanye West will never be iconic. His music is not broad enough. I suppose he will be 'remembered', but I guess I was thinking bigger picture on this topic.

He is a huge star within his bubble.

There are no artists today who are stars beyond their genre. That's just how fragmented music has become in this era. If there is, I can not think of one.

Somebody like Brittany Spears will be better remembered 40 years from now. Much broader appeal, much bigger star.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single Kanye West song.

If that's true then how could you possibly say this.......

His music is not broad enough.

Kanye West samples everything from Prog Rock(King Crimson) to soul(Smokey Robinson) Spoken Word(Gil Scott-Heron) and Indie Rock(Bon Iver).

He gets respect from both hardcore hip hop fans and the indie community.
He was the headlining act of Coachella this year and closed with a hour and a half performance. People who just got done listening to their small indie bands all gathered to hear Kanye West.

At the same time he could hop on a hip hop stage and out rap Jay-Z and Eminem at a hip hop concert.

Kanye West is in no "bubble" like you said.
