The San Francisco 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, according to a league source.


Quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson will take over offensive coordinator duties, according to the source.

49ers coach Mike Singletary and Raye have not seen eye-to-eye about the reasons for the team's struggling offense, which appeared lost in a 31-10 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

The 49ers, 0-3, entered the season with playoff expectations and passed on several quarterbacks to stay with starter Alex Smith, who has been inconsistent during the team's three losses.

Raye, who came under fire following the 49ers' 31-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, took responsibility for the team's problems on offense.

"It's my responsibility. I bear all the responsibility for the way we operate on offense," Raye told reporters on Sept. 16. "I'm the leader. It's my watch. I have the responsibility for the things that occur where it concerns the offense."

The 49ers showed progress in a 25-22 Monday night loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 20, but Sunday's one-sided loss to the Chiefs put the focus back on Raye.

Johnson, who was in his second season as quarterback coach, served as the Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coach from 2006 to 2007, and as the Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach for three years, where he worked with Michael Vick.

Martz wanted the Niners head coaching job for himself, and he was somewhat offended that he was passed over for the less experienced Singletary when it came time for the Niners to name an interim head coach. I don't think Martz would have stayed at SF even if Singletary asked him to.

The 49ers only ran the ball 40% of the time under Raye. Compared to 43.3% under Martz. Raye is being criticized for not running the ball enough/getting Gore the ball enough.

Hard to do though when your team is always behind by a few scores (Seattle and KC).

Either way, this won't make a difference. Singletary is just not head coach qualified. This hire would have been like the Raiders hiring Bill Romonawski as HC.

His rah rah attitude and speeches are quickly getting stale. He's been receiving heat from local media for quite some time now. Everyone liked the guy at first, but it's become pretty aware that he doesn't know what he is doing and is kind of a dumb ass when it comes to being a head coach.

This interview before the Saints game pretty much shows what kind of a HC Singletary is. Listen to him talk about Raye in this interview, just 2 weeks ago. And now he fires him. He's cooky.

Mike Singletary won't do any more interviews with Dennis O'Donnell

49ers coach Mike Singletary engaged in a highly entertaining interview with Dennis O'Donnell on KPIX in San Francisco last week, consisting mostly of O'Donnell asking relatively innocuous questions and an angry Singletary offering terse repsonses.

KPIX later pulled the interview from its web site, and today comes the sad news that we won't get to see a Singletary-O'Donnell redux.

Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News reports that O'Donnell has been replaced by Kim Coyle on the KPIX "Coach's Corner" segment.

According to 49ers spokesman Bob Lange, the station and the team made a "joint agreement to give the interviews a better dynamic going forward."

Personally, I thought Singletary and O'Donnell had a great dynamic. Apparently Singletary disagreed.

At least Singletary still does interviews with David Letterman.

I can see SF beating one of those teams. That's how it works - Mike Singletary/Alex Smith pull a few big wins out of their ass, and people go back to saying ''It's the 49ers year next year.'' But I'm all for them keeping both guys, because I'm sure you'll agree - the longer the 49ers stay irrelevant, the better.

The Martz era was the golden age of Rams football. Always a contender, never dull, never boring, always exciting.

Fact: Rams missed the playoffs and failed to post a winning record for 9 consecutive years, until Martz was hired in 1999.

Fact: Rams made the playoffs 5 out of 6 years, including 2 SB's, with Martz as OC or HC from 99-04.

Fact: Rams have yet to make the playoffs or even have a winning record since they fired Martz in '05.

Firing Mike Martz was the biggest mistake the Rams franchise ever made.

I've lost so much faith in Singletary the past few weeks. It's obvious that he's losing control of the team. Singletary has continually called out players, only to recant saying "I was wrong." Not surprising that the players are slowly turning on him as well.

After the loss to the Seahawks, Singletary called out Smith and Crabtree. The next day he changed his mind and apologized for calling out Crabtree, while Smith had the backing of Patrick Willis saying that the loss wasn't on his shoulders.

It seems like the players are together, except for Crabtree who it looks like has become a diva.

Won't be surprised to see Singletary fired mid-season, and having him replaced by someone on the staff, and then them going after an established coach from somewhere else.

Rumor has it, that the Chiefs players were basically calling out the plays when the 49ers lined up. Can't really believe Raye last so long, the guy was a below average OC, and has only had a top 15 offense three times in the past 30 years.

The 49ers need fresh blood.
