5,000 passing yards ?

in the NFL true/ false thread I said 5 players would break the 5000 yrd mark this year to which krulmichael said false.

do you really think its not possible/ 3 guys did it last year and 2 were very close/pretty close to it.

Over the last 2 years the NFL has pretty much find people for a bunch of defensive hits and defenders are having to redifine how they tackle a guy. Rookies are coming in looking like passing experts.

Do you realy think 4 or 5 QBs wont easily pass that mark again this year ?

I might even say 5 is a stretch but 4 is much better odds.


and I will add that Flacco got over 3,600 the last 3 years in a row..by my definition and in my opinion, that is not sucking as much people like to knock him here.

3 guys did it last year in a league with rules slanted towards the offense and defenses having less time to prepare due to the lockout (although you could argue offenses did, too, but I think it impacted defenses more). I'd say 3 might do it this year, but 5 would be reachable, but not probable.

I remember this time last year going back and forth with Senser about a similar argument. I said I'd be suprised if I saw another QB break 5.000 yards last year, obviously I was wrong. As far as 5 guys doing it, all three of those guys that did it would have to play all 16 games and replicate what they did last year. Eli Manning missed it last year by 67 yards, and Rodgers would of done it if he played the last game. So I'll say the same thing as last year, I would be suprised if I saw 5 guys break 5,000 yards, which means we'll see 8.

its the rules, not the defenses. its not as though the nfl is lacking in talent on dee.

It is the rules. And it's not even the QB contact rules or the defenseless receiver rules. It's illegal contact or throwing a PI flag on any ball that isn't caught. Pass defenders need to be able to get away with more contact now that they can't separate the receiver from the ball with a hit or rush the passer without being flagged. Last year, it seemed like not only were they not getting away with more, or with the same amount as they were after the BS contact rule was enforced, but they weren't getting away with ANY contact at all. I'd be willing to bet that, taking out the helmet to helmet and roughing the passer penalties, there were still more penalties on passing plays than, well, ever.

3 did it the same year with 3 more close behind. It would be more interesting had only one did it.....but 3?

no easy task? had Cam Newton been drafted 1-15 years ago, he would have looked like a promising but typical rookie.
Its obviously very easy to get 5000 relatively speaking

5,000 is certainly watered down when the number of times it was accomplished basically tripled last season. 4,000 is the new 3,000. 5,000 is the new 4,000. It's a lot of yards, it's nice, but it's not some fantastic amazing achievement in today's environment.

Yeah, good point. But those would be more like the 4,000 yard guys.

Brees & Brady & the others throwing for 5k is more like Sammy Sosa hitting 60 HR's...while McGwire and Bonds are hitting 70. Impressive, but certainly watered down.

Just to continue this further, Andrew Dalton throwing for 3400 would be the "Kevin Elster hitting 25 HRs" equivalent.

I recall hearing some NFL show (don't remember which one) talking about Drew Brees having a shot at 6,000 passing yards. Imo, this is embarrassing. This isn't something I'd be proud of as a league.

I'll go ahead and say more than 3 will do it this year.

I only said 4000 is his possibility

Only reason I would say unlikely is health. Having to drop back 40+ times a game to amass that yardage with nothing more than 5 usually mediocre guys protecting you diminishes your chances of playing all 16.

It's a very interesting argument we should sticky an over under poll and see who was right.

A decade ago 4,000 yards was a bigger accomplishment than it is now. Seems like 4,500-5,000 yards are the benchmarks for top-level quarterbacks now. Much like everyone else has said though, that is a product of the new rules implemented over the years that has made it much more difficult for a defender to do his job. That is why it is so impressive to watch some of these corners today when they shutdown an entire side of a field.
