The quality of football in the NFL isn't shitty. The QB and RB depth has never been better in the sport. Yes, the rules make it easier for wide receivers to catch balls but defenses are faster, better, and deeper than ever as well. The brand of football being played by the league hasn't just all of a sudden decreased dramatically like you are insinuating. You're just seeing it how you want to see it.
15 running backs ran for over 1000 yards last season (Forte was 16th with 997).
16 running backs ran for over 1000 yards in 1995.
What's interesting is that only 2 running backs had over 300 carries last season while 9 did in that 1995 season.
The passing game has just gotten better because QB's are better and the rules have made it safer for receivers and quarterbacks. While teams are not running the ball as much, they are running the ball as effectively as before.
That doesn't automatically equate to a low brand of football being played. That is purely your opinion and I don't even get you've formed it, simply because QB's are passing for more yards?
So when teams start drafting more pass rushing DL and get smaller on the DL and more susceptible to the power run game, will you change your tune and start saying the quality of football being played has gone up?
I will change my tune and say the quality of football has gone up when points are no longer cheap, scoring lots of points is relatively difficult again, and making a comeback against an NFL defense is no longer a forgone conclusion.
You are right, it is merely my opinion that the quality of the product is in he shitter right now, but when I look at a league where passing has never been easier (making most games resemble a vintage WAC football game), and defenses have been hamstrung by a series of difficult to overcome rules (most of which I support, btw, in the interest of safety, but at the same time I realize the negative impact these rules have on the product), this is not the same NFL I fell in love with as a kid and have enjoyed immensely my entire life. Sunday's just aren't the same the last two or three years. Overexposure is another issue that bugs me, but this is not the thread for that.
And I strongly disagree with your argument about QB & RB depth being better than ever. There are a small handful of elite RB's in the league, and the rest are essentially the same and wholly dependent on oline play/scheme to determine success/failure. Plug & play RB has been the theme for a half decade or more now. Elite backs are a dying breed.
QB is as shallow as it's been in decades. 20-25 years ago, teams with bad QB's were rare. Most were competent at worst. Now, we have a half dozen or so HOF caliber QB's, which is great, but i've never seen so many teams with complete scrubs at the QB position as i've seen the last few seasons.
And NOBODY has quality backup QB's anymore. Again, years ago, most teams had a guy who could instantly step in and play well. Usually a grizzled veteran like Frank Reich or Steve DeBerg or Vince Evans or Doug Flutie or Mike Tomczak, or guys waiting for a chance who you knew could play like Jeff Hostetler or Steve Young. Now, with the salary cap, nobody is paying what a solid veteran commands to be a backup, so teams are littered with rookies and bums and journeyman who can't play. So when QB's go down, we get people like Henry Burris or Kellen Clemens or TJ Yates or Brady Quinn or Curtis Painter starting NFL games. And then people complain when the league wants to protect the QB's, not understanding that bad QB play = unwatchable football.
Salary cap also effects depth overall. Five year veterans who know their way around the league are replaced by cost efficient rookies who can't play, because you aren't going to pay a five year guy a higher minimum to play special teams. There is no such thing as the solid veteran backup anymore, unless its a guy who lost his starting job, and will soon be cut the next offseason.
The league is just in an odd place right now. Kind of like steroid era baseball, where it looked like baseball, played like baseball, but was an odd brand of baseball. You would have heard similar complaints from me then. All of these things run in cycles.
