A Question About the Potential Rating...

Ok, someone lay this out for me.

I've got a guy who is 62 OVR, and let's say his potential rating in 80 OVR. Does that mean that no matter how many great years this guy has, he will NEVER EVER EVER go above 80 OVR? Or does this potential rating change over time?

Also, is the potential rating viewable for all players? If so, isn't that almost like cheating? You can pretty much identify every single bust.

I dont think the potential is representing the most he can be in Overall rating. I think its just the level of potential.

I just wrote something...and it made absolutely no sense when I read it back to myself. I am indeed clueless on this potential rating stuff.

Let's say you draft a CB first round and he's a 70 and his potential rating is only a 75. What would happen to his potential rating if you were to convert him to FS?

Let me try to smooth this out with my thinking, it's not what they can be overall but at the rate they progress; you draft a CB with 92 OVR, his potential though is 65, now around 7th you pick up a 65 TE, his potential is 92(just rehashing numbers to stay consistent), now the 92 guy isn't going to drop is he? No, but his rate of growth will be lower as he has less to improve on, now the TE is a 65 but he has a lot of potential and may end up being an 85(or higher and not necessarily a 92)... I hope my explanation brings something to light and helps confusion more so than causing more.

So basically, the higher the potential the faster the player progresses. The lower the number the slower he progresses.

I believe potential will be represented to the USER in the form of a bar. The more full the bar is, the higher the player's ceiling is. It won't be an exact science but you will have some indication of how good a player can become (this represents real life in some ways since scouts access potential in real life).

I'm pretty sure the potential rating will change just like other ratings. Michael Crabtree might have a high potential rating right now, but in 12 seasons of franchise he won't still have the same potential.

Potential Rating is not the rate they progress its what the max their overall can be.

The “potential” rating is another sort of ‘hidden’ addition that we are changing up this year to impact progression (and Franchise mode overall). Every player in the game has a potential rating that he cannot exceed (a la NFL Head Coach 09). This year, we’re actually exposing that rating so you’ll have an idea why your player is not progressing - typically a situation where his potential is maxed out. Exposing this rating also help quite a bit in making personnel decisions when contracts are up. One key detail here is that you’ll only see potential for players on your own team. CPU player potentials will be hidden.

Since you also have an idea of what his potential is, you can combine the information to determine if the player has high potential and if he’s able to be more than a project. Just because a player has high potential doesn’t mean that he’ll be a productive player for a while. You may draft players in the 7th round with high potential but they’ll come in at 59 overall. So it could take years for them to be ready to play significant roles. If you do your homework, you can find the Marques Colston’s of the Draft. Players with high potential and high overalls that can contribute right away. I spent a lot of time tuning the draft classes so that there are really busts and gems in the draft now. You may draft a LT who comes out at 80 overall but has a potential of 81. Or you may draft a QB in the 6th round who has a 99 potential and a 78 overall rating ala Tom Brady.

Think about it like this though, it's better than drafting a player, lets say RB, and having him being an 80 then his rookie year he runs for 1,000 yards and 12 tds but when the off-season rolls around he stays right where he's at and you don't even know why. At least with this you won't be wasting your time with a player that will be staying the same.

Yeah, it actually gives us all the info...saying it's a max rating similar to Head Coach. Which means that the potential rating is the highest OVR rating a player can achieve. I also take this to mean that a player's potential rating will NEVER change.

Although the fact that you won't be able to see the rating of guys not on your team is nice.

When we create players, can we edit potential ratings? If so, what if we make their potential a 40 and their overall a 99. What would happen then?

You can only view potential rating for your team in the franchise.
