Aaron Rodgers greatest passer ever ? (according to Joe Theisman)

We’re quite used to high praise pointed in the direction of Packers QB Aaron Rodgers from former players, analysts and players turned analysts. It’s happened before. Even from former quarterbacks.

But the latest from NFL Network analyst Joe Theismann should open some eyes.

“Rodgers, in my personal opinion, is the greatest quarterback when it comes to throwing the football ever to play the game,” Theismann said on “Playbook” Friday. “The release, the quickness he gets it out, the spin on the ball, the position of the ball, everything is absolutely dead perfect. It isn’t just once or twice, its repeated time after time.”

Theismann goes on to explain how and why Rodgers is an “expert” at throwing to a receivers’ back shoulder in the video above. Don’t miss his breakdown.

Ill say this on the plus side. I said for years he was the sharpest QB in the league. Never understood Brees hype but Rodgers getting no love. Joe isnt completely crazy as in purely throwing terms Rodgers is better than just about every QB in the league.

However even recently Kurt Warner would get that nod , Troy Aikman and Dan Marino would also stop the flashback tour in the 90s so. Ever ? Thats a stretch.

I've said this for about a year and a half now: Peyton Manning is the greatest quarterback to ever play the game and Aaron Rodgers is currently the best quarterback in the NFL. And it won't be long that Rodgers will be pushing for the his place in history.

We hear this kind of stuff every couple of years about a different QB. Warner, Manning, Brees are the most recent exmples of "the best pure passer ever". Marino before that, Aikman, Montana, whatever. People splooged for Brees for two or three years, now it's Rodgers turn I guess.

If the Packers go 8-8 or get bounced in the WC round, guys like Theisman will move on to the next hot QB. Stuff like this has just as much to do with team success. If the Chargers go 14-2 and win the SB, it'll be a Rivers sploogefest. Yawn.

Rodgers is only the 3rd best QB in Packers history at this moment in time, much less the history of the league. Not saying that he doesn't have the potential to live up to Theisman's praise (which I agree with in large part) but it's a little premature.

This doesn't have anything to do with accomplishments in comparison .... just about mechanics and throwing ability.
In today's league no defense and no hitting you basically get to see guys throw as if it was practice so usually the differences come from mechanics and preparedness as opposed to other intangibles.

I think he is referring to nothing more than Rodgers mechanics and I can't really disagree with him.

Mechanically and fundamentally, Rodgers has little to no flaws. I'm not a QB coach but I don't see how another QB could mechanically be any better.

Comparing QBs from today to QBs in the 60-80s is ridiculous. The rules are so profoundly different. I am not saying Rodgers isn't a great QB, but put him in the 80s and his results are different.

Put Elway or Marino in their prime in this era, God knows what kind of numbers they'd produce.

Today's rules totally favour/favor the QBs. In the 80s, not so much.

Greatest ever is quit the stretch, but he is definitely one of the current best.

There comes a point where it really doesn't matter who is the best or who is better. The thing that really matters is, does the guy have the ability to take you to a championship and win it. That's why I'm not disappointed that we don't have Brady or Manning, and it really doesn't matter to me if Rodgers is better than they are (to me anyways), cause Rodgers is definitely good enough to take a team there and win it.

He is one of the top QB's in the league. You guys can have Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers. You're teams are in good hands with them, but I'm absolutely thrilled to have Rodgers.

I think itd be akin to saying Tony Gwynn is the best pure hitter or Allan Houston best pure shooter. Normally nothing to be gained since "all things" arent equal... but in todays league its at the forefront of importance with such a surgical environment.

I would disagree, because its the passing thing that sets the QB position apart from other positions. Gwynn still has to hit for power and field his position, Houston still has to pass and play defense, but Rogers being the best passer in history is sort of above those two examples. It would be like saying Dominik Hasek is the best goalie ever at "blocking shots", or Morten Andersen is the best kicker ever at "kicking field goals".
