Is someone like AP actually laying his hands on a child going to be less threatening? If he's going that hard with a switch I don't know if that's the better option. Smacking someone is more violent to me.

That's my point, he's already a large imposing man, any 4 year old would be terrified to be spanked by him. I've been abused in my time, officially on the books, CPS, counselors, taken from my home for 4 days, investigation, all that for being hit with a broom stick. I've been spanked by switches, belts, slippers, sticks, a fucking belt buckle once cut my leg...the point is you never now how hard you're truly hitting a child with a weapon, and yes a switch is a weapon. A belt is a weapon. If you use your hand I guarantee it will be far less painful to the child every time, and in most cases spanking a child with your hand will not leave a lasting mark.

Pssh, this was normal when I was growing up. Hell my mom made me go get the switch she used on me. And whooped my ass even harder if I came with some small twig. Since he's an nfl player I'm sure his hits hurt a lot more though. I don't mind the method, but the severity looks to be too much based off the pictures.

It's a parents responsibility to make sure there ARE consequences. Even with "timeouts" or later ages, when you ground them, there needs to be consequences instead of empty threats.

I tell this story not to criticize my friend, who I think is an idiot for leaving his internet open, but they are his own reasons. He has people over quite a bit to watch WWE and MMA shows, parties, cookouts, etc and leaves his internet open so people don't have to worry about a log-in. On one side is a couple with two kids, and the wife came over one day and asked him if he could put his wireless on a password, as her daughter was grounded.

He politely asked why she had access to computers, etc while grounded, and the response was "school work." As politely as he could, he told her that it was her responsibility to make sure her daughter couldn't access internet, not his and that he was not putting a password on his network.

It's an extreme situation, but the daughter had no consequences. She had her laptop and likely a phone in her room, and could do as she pleased. In this situation, the parents should have confiscated all of it and hid it, only to bring it out in a family room when she needed it for school.

Cant bitch about todays kids and bitch about discipline.
Cultures are different obviously but every Korean and Hispanic kid I knew was petrified of the belt or sandles. Two of the nicest warmest people Ive known were also subject to the most abstract punishments. (Maybe other cultures do this) but many hispanic parents including the parents of the two above would have their kids kneel on rice grains while holding textbooks in their hands.
Personally my father never once struck me but holy crap he would start the unbuckling and Id snap out of the wild mode I'd be in. My mother hit me with a belt numerous times the only time shit got serious was when I instinctively grabbed it and pulled it out of her hands my...ooo nelly..never do that.
Ive said this before discipline isnt just a spanking. It must come with proper communication. I knew why and what was happening every time something physical was threatened. When you smack and hit just out of anger and frustration you create a disconnect and it will lead to violent behavior by the child.
I have no issue with the switch or belt etc...but a 4 yr old would likely just be sitting their crying after one swat. Thats enough. Those pics make it look like a full blown man tantrum.

Being from a strict family it is very possible. (Still doesn't make it right tho)

Here's my thing. There's no way to differentiate whether a person was a result of strict parenting , or grew up well in spite of it. If someone got whooped regularly when they were doing wrong growing up but becomes a highly successful and overall good person how can you argue against him doing the same with his child ? There's no one right way to parent. Like you said theres a line of actual long term physical harm he probably crossed but in general people are too quick to judge one way or the other. Alot of variables with discipline.

If your point is to teach him a lesson, as a parent, I would think he could have done it by spanking him on his butt (open hand) 1-2x. Seems he was trying to get his kid to fear him or let his anger get the best of him. I don't think a 4yr old would lie that he would get it worse had he told on his dad (those saying kids lie). That is something a person that is being abused says out of fear of the abuser coming back to get them.

I'm all for you handling your kids the way you feel you need to handle him.

However I do disagree with the excessiveness and find that to be over the top and unnecessary.

Yeah, I'm all for old school discipline, but sounds like this was excessive.

My maternal grandmother down south had one of those long-ass green hickory switches. She would tear your legs UP, and that switch would be cutting wind too. Back in the day, old folks didn't play. At home, Dad handled most of the discipline. We weren't spanked that often - the threat of getting hit with the belt kept us from doing too much dumb shit.

My bro & I were the only kids I knew growing up who didn't have to pick their own switch. My fear w/this whole incident is people going against spanking. The mob form of justice being spouted out over the air waves is what is taking trend. What Adrian did was beyond extreme. I'm all for whippin's. I once told my parents if whippin's were a religion, my dad would be the ayatollah & my mom the pope. And I'm thankful for each one. But I never got hit more that 6-7 times in a "session". And they never, never, never, ever, ever, ever never left a mark.

Same here. When you get it when you're young, all you need is for your dad to look at you & you know the deal. The older you get, the less you got.

I have no complaints about disciplining children, even hitting them with belts and switches seems fine to me within reason. I simply have to ask if a 220 lbs athlete needs to hit a four year old that many times in order to discipline him. Once, twice make it an nice three even, that is ok. But it looks like he hit him many more times than that.

I got my dam ass whooped as a kid for a while, wooden spoons, belts, paddles, eventually it became whatever my mom could reach, sometimes shit was thrown at me... Then got put into the ADHD counseling type shit and pills... turned into a zombie and asked my mom if she could take me off them, and she went with the corner... man I spent at least 6 hours in the corner one day cuz she added 5 minutes every time you turned around or talked lol Love my mom, never held a grudge, it is what it is... I don't spank my son, I've smacked him on his ass a few quick times, making sure i hit him soft and give it more of a forceful push just so he remembers daddy is stronger lol I think that to a certain extent parents should be able to handle their children how they please, but he has to know keep your dam hands off unless you are with the mother. You can't mark up your child and send him to somebody that has control of your life (Anybody that has a kid and is separated knows this shit lol)

AP is soft compared to the nuns in my old catholic school. I feared them more than my old man, and that's saying something. I saw kids get slapped, hit with steel rulers, erasers & wooden pointers. You'd get arrested for that shit today.

This story was from when I was 7 or 8. My brother is 6 years older than me and was my father's first born. My father was abused pretty bad by his father. Horrible stories that I cringed at. My dad never held a grudge against his dad for abusing him, but did cut complete ties with him when his dad left his mom.

So one time I saw my brother deliberately disobey pops. My pops unleashed hell on him. My mom held me and decided when it was enough then intervened.

Point taken sir. My mom was the one to discipline me, as I never wanted to test my father. My mom gave me what I needed a couple times. But that threat of pops was more than enough.

As a father. I don't want to hit my child, but if that line is crossed and if I need to make that point I will. Discipline is key. Respect is as well. My daughter has never pushed the right buttons to warrant that. I have grabbed her and have scared the fuck out of her a couple times. But that's been it so far. I hope we can continue like this. I feel I'm doing something right.

I am not a parent, so I try not to get high and mighty where such things are concerned.
That said, my dad was 6-2 300 lbs., a simple bad look was enough for me. In my entire childhood I can only remember one spanking ... sadly no spankings as an adult (but that's another issue).
Again, not pretending for a second to be an authority on parenting, but in my experience the children who suffer from the worst behavioural issues are usually a reflection of their incredibly stupid parents. Go to Wal-Mart, listen to kids. Go to some other stores, listen to kids. I don't blame the kids ... frankly, I don't blame the parents - it's a vicious cycle.
Most reasonably intelligent parents don't have to resort to corporal punishment because their child already gets behaviour.

I never was hit with a switch, but my dad did use a belt. I've never hit my son with a belt, I use to use my hands, but I stopped sometime last year. He is 5, so he has his moments, but generally he his is a good kid. Giving him a look or raising my voice works.

As a parent I don't agree with using switches. I had belts (big leather belts) across my ass quite often.

That obviously did not have the desired effect.
