This statement bothers me. You're paying to use a service that works very well and is pretty expensive to maintain. Just because your paying to use things doesn't mean your entitled to not be shown ads.

Alternatively, idiots pay for TV and are shown 15 mins of ads for every hour of TV they watch. Why not complain about that?

Or when you pay to see a movie and spend the first 20 mins watching ads for other shit and movies?

Do you get pissed at live sport events where ads are plastered just about everywhere?

But the difference here is that there are similar services that offer much of the same things but aren't inundated with ads. I think it's fair to ask why Microsoft needs to pump so many ads while Valve and Sony get by with only a fraction and offer their services free of charge.

Valve and Sony don't offer the same services plain and simple. People that don't understand what valve and steam is and try to compare it with something like xbox live really need to look into what is being offered.

I wasn't referring to being shown ads, I don't mind that. But a laggy and slow dashboard potentially due to the excess of said ads is unacceptable IMO. Back in 2005 on the original 360 dashboard, there was one little box for image ads, and loading was much faster.

Valve admittedly doesn't offer the same in terms of non-gaming entertainment, but the community aspect (friends list, messaging, stat tracking, etc.) is similar.

However, Sony currently does offer many of the same things outside of a cross-game party chat. It's also free and doesn't force you to see ads when you turn on your PS3 or switch games.

The main problem is though if you wanted the old dashboard at this point you'd have to pay more money for live because their revenue from these ad campaigns is putting them into the black and basically support microsofts entertainment side. Essentially what we're all paying for now isn't quite enough to support the costs of live itself but ad revenue (amongst other things) is keeping MS going quite well.

The gaming side isn't making all the money it used to be and them finding other ways of making revenue is helping a lot.

I have so many friends that either got rid of Live or just sold their 360's outright and stuck with PS3. One of them rebought a 360 so his wife and kid could play Kinect. I had to basically give him a hand job to convince him to get NCAA on 360 because he hates the 360 and Live so much.

In the last year alone so from lets say from July now to July last year I've bought one xbox live title and that was Trials Evolution and I downloaded Doritos Crash Course one night when my room mate and I were finding games to play and bet on against each other lol. I also downloaded the BF3 demo/beta in the fall.

When I went to buy trials that was the first time since the battlefield demo I had looked at the dashboard. My roomie downloaded crash course while I was out at the store.

You don't have to goto the dashboard if you don't want to and like I've said before I rarely go to it yet I never have problems finding anything. I remember sitting in the bf3 party listening to people complain about not being able to find the demo while me who never uses the dashboard was able to find it no problem and pretty much had the game installed by the time most of them found it. I was just amazed lol.

Expect more Xbox Live ads

Gamers should expect to see more advertisements on Xbox Live in the time ahead. Microsoft announced this week that its first wave of NUads (short for "natural user-interface ads"), which rolled out during fall 2012, have been highly successful and additional investment in this space is planned.

According to Microsoft, 37 percent of viewers engaged in some way with NUads when prompted with the option to vote. Out of this 37 percent, 71 percent actually voted in a poll. Additionally, 97 percent of those participants saw their vote included in a final tally of votes.

Microsoft general manager of Xbox Live entertainment and advertising Ross Honey claimed the company's NUads have "redefined the 30-second spot." He said that though traditional TV's 30-second spot has not changed much since the 1930s, NUads offer an unprecedented level of consumer engagement.

"These results show that NUads is a real breakthrough in TV advertising, and you can expect more investment from us when it comes to this new ad format and video advertising in general," Honey said in a statement.

Microsoft's NUads launched last year featuring ads from major companies like Subway and Toyota.
