Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag story of sex and repentance outlined by lead scriptwriter

Ubisoft's long-running Assassin's Creed series is driven as much by its story as it is assassinations, but during the first public look at Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag not a whole lot was said about its narrative. The game's first trailer only nudged fans gently in the direction of a plot; something that quickly became overshadowed by a montage of pirate debauchery and wench-based threesomes.

But Black Flag's lead scriptwriter Darby McDevitt tells us this sexually explicit motif is actually at the heart of the game's narrative. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will be the story of immorality and repentance.

According to McDevitt, the game's protagonist Edward Kenway is a married man whose strained relationship with his wife is punctuated by relationships with other women.

"THERE IS A SPECIAL WOMAN IN EDWARD'S LIFE, BUT THERE ARE ALSO OTHER NOT-SO-SPECIAL WOMEN AS WELL."

"Edward Kenway is a raucous and bawdy chap," McDevitt explains, "but he's also a married man, and one of his primary motivation in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is to get rich and prove himself a ‘man of quality' to his family and betters. So there is a special woman in Edward's life, but there are also other not-so-special women as well."

The theme is followed through in Black Flag's gameplay. Like in the earlier installment of the series, you can use NPCs to achieve certain goals. In Black Flag, Kenway can direct female NPCs to seduce and distract targets. We see this in action in the earlier trailer, says McDevitt who points to one of the women in the first trailer's threesome scene as an example.

"While this scene in the reveal trailer was clearly designed hint at the pirate lifestyle, there is a gameplay element here, to show that you can use certain NPC characters to more effectively achieve your goals. You might have noticed that the woman in the foreground seduced his target at the end of the trailer (eagle-eyed fans have already pointed out that they are the same woman)."

BLACK FLAG WILL BE 'MORE OPEN AND FREE THAN EVER BEFORE.'

Like all titles in the series, the game will be pre-scripted for dramatic effect — That means there won't be any element of choosing who Kenway can have a relationship with in the main story; however, McDevitt says that gameplay has been designed to be "more open and free than ever before," suggesting there may be more decision-making is on the cards. While Kenway's relationship with his wife is one of the central struggles in the game, McDevitt adds the protagonist will also have a few significant close relationships with other women, including the infamous Anne Bonny.

McDevitt remained tight-lipped about what exact role the ever-present Templars will play this time around, on the other hand. He would only reveal that the Templar consortium would be made up of a "diverse" cast of characters from three different empires. But the story of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag seems to be sustained as much by the repercussions of pirate-style sexuality as it is by the familiar Templar mythology.

ACIV: Black Flag to be 'more open and free than ever before'

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will set new series standards for player freedom, according to Ubisoft lead scriptwriter Darby McDevitt. Speaking with Polygon, the writer teased that gameplay in the pirate-themed title has been designed to be "more open and free than ever before."



This tallies with Ubisoft's previously expressed ambition to make Black Flag a bigger, wider world that has learned lessons from past installments in the series.

McDevitt also revealed new details about Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway. He explained that Kenway is a married man (who also spends times with "not-so-special women") with a goal of proving himself to be a "man of quality."

Black Flag launches October 29 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. The game is also in development for next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 4. A release for Microsoft's next Xbox has not been confirmed yet.

Ubisoft has me again lol. After a couple of my favorite games from this gen (AC2/ACB), AC3 sorely disappointed me. However, it looks as if they've addressed a few of the major problems I had with that one and God dammit I'm excited for this game. Treasure hunting on islands? Upgrading your ship? Taking out ports and finding new side quests? FUUUUUUUU TAKE MY MONEY!!!

Yeah AC3 has some nice things (looks gorgeous, cool combat killing (too easy tho), naval battles), but there's some serious bad shit in it.

I'm very impressed with the open world there, lack of loading between ship travel and hopping off. The boarding looks excellent. Game certainly looks very promising.

Yeah I'm very excited now. I absolutely liked the combat, as it felt much more evolved. But the things they took away from that game just killed it for me. Those Assassin tombs in AC2 have been some of my favorite things I've ever done in gaming. So now that I see they've brought something like that back to this game gets me all tingly inside. Naval battles were a cool addition but this just takes it so much further with the ability to explore and upgrade, which looks pretty fun. While the colonies were a cool setting for 3, I just didn't have the urge to explore like I did when the games were set in Italy. It kind of lost that fun factor of seeing what all was out there. But with the Caribbean, this seems like a place I could just explore for hours upon hours without doing anything to progress the game and still be completely satisfied (which I loved about Far Cry 3 and is also something that has me very excited to do in GTAV).

Yeah I agree on most of those points, AC2 tombs rocked and there's not much desire to explore the frontier/Boston/New York. I do like the hunting aspect though.

As for combat, you didn't find it too easy? I've done 5 or 6 of the Forts, I literally just run into them and tomahawk everyone's head off, no fear of dying despite there being 20+ soldiers (with fucking guns) surrounding me. That's kinda crap IMO.

Zero need to use stealth if you don't want to, and almost all gadgets I have are never used, no point. I feel like I'm on a rampage in Saint's Row sometimes.

I honestly don't remember. I haven't played it since release and haven't gotten around to another playthrough yet. I remember the updates felt more fluid. Now that I really think about it, I can't say I remember dying too much.

Would love to get this, but with new consoles coming, I just don't see myself spending the extra money on collector's editions this fall.
