The game looks great, it's fixed a multitude of issues I had with 3.
As for it being the best in the series, 2 had a tremendous story and really launched the series in a great direction with 2 follow ups that were great/good. There is SO MUCH TO DO in this game, and it is ALL good. The city stuff is there, the tombs, the forts....
I hated the naval battles in 3. I LOVE them in this. I spend more time on the sea than on land, especially fighting other ships. So many variations on different battles.
Get it for PS3, play it and then pay the $10 to upgrade on PS4.

Literally the only reason I'm passing on the PS3 is because I am 100% done with that controller. I'd rather wait until the 19th and get it for PC, where I can use the 360 controller.
Appreciate the impressions though. I am definitely excited about it, just exercising some rare self-control.

If I haven't played any of the series (briefly played with the very first one...sue me), will I be missing out on anything by picking this up? Debating on buying it day 1 for the PS4.

The present day story is fucking retarded by now anyways, plus it seems like they've taken a step back from that for this game anyways. There are some cool characters before, but I don't know how much they'll refer back. You could probably have plenty of fun in this game without knowing much about the series. If you wanted to, you could go and easily find cutscenes and ending of the other games on YouTube. The big connection between this and 3 is that the protagonist in this game is the grandfather of the one in 3.

I would spring the $10 and get ACII just to get back into the feel of the game. It may be old, but it's still awesome. Like Swarley said, you can watch the endings of the other games to get the general jist of the games.
They've actually done a good job integrating the previous story into this one. It makes sense so far...and it's different from before. Now you're a "game tester" for Abstergo and you can wander around their offices. Some of the previous characters make appearances, so there is definitely continuity.
Last year at this time I started the AC journey. ACII was my first, that game is fucking epic. It is one of the few games in my life I literally completed every little thing. AC Brotherhood was pretty good too. But after spending so much time on those over a 2 month period I started AC Revelations and was burnt out, never got far. I need to get back into it now that GTA is done as I have Revelations and AC III to do.

Finished the main story tonight. This game did something that AC3 did not (among numerous things): I would very much like to see Edward back in the next Assassin's Creed game. There's still quite a bit about his story that I'd like to see.
Damn fine game, btw. It may not have brought back one of the things I was dying to see, which was the amazing platforming quests from Ezio's games, but it did bring me a game that pulled me in from the beginning and had me right to the end, a character that I wanted to play with and wanted to know more about and a world that was fun to be in. They brought in a few things that worked really well in Far Cry 3 like the hunting and crafting and great exploration, which I enjoyed very much.
Some story stuff...
If they do bring Edward back for another go-around, I'd like to see them shed some light on Haytham's childhood.

I'd say I've put in a good 30 hours or so. I'm still only at 61% overall completion. However I also did a good deal of random exploring early on, doing viewpoints everywhere I went, finding treasures, pillaging ships and looking for the Templar keys. Still lots I'd like to do after I play the DLC, though.
