ATB Presents: 100 years, 1,000 films

Every day it seems more and more likely that the inconvenient truth is it will be an unemployed summer for ATB.

As a result of this tragedy, this summer I want to spend my weekday nights watching films.

Some of you may be aware of my more-than-a-little-concerning-to-my-friends obsessive compulsive list of all the movies that I would like to see, along with all that I've seen.

Every week or so I will pick a year in the past 100 years, and spend the week watching the most remarkable movies from that year.

In this thread I will share the year along with a summary of what went down in films for the year, and hopefully people will discuss them.

I'll share thoughts with every movie, but I'm not going to write actual reviews because I hate writing actual reviews. I do not feel I'm knowledgeable enough in certain areas of appreciating films, and the last thing I want is to talk out of my ass like an ignorant cunt.

Obviously I am not going to watch 1,000 movies this summer, I don't even plan on spending a terribly significant amount of time focused on watching movies compared to past summers. This thread will be a slow-burn.

I'll choose the years with a random number chooser thing. Some early years will be combined since pre-1950 there are generally not as many per year worth watching, and availability may be an issue. Or it just may be a shit year for movies (See: 1983)

If there are a shitton of movies in a year, as will be the case for a lot of years from the 80's on, I'll randomly choose 10 movies from that year and come back to it later on.

I am open to any suggestions people have for movies I may have missed.

Damn. 80s is my least favorite decade for movies. All I've seen from what you posted is Bladerunner and Fast Times.

I can't believe Porky's was the 5th highest grossing movie of that year. One from 1981 thats worth a watch is Escape from New York.

White Dog

Starring Kristy McNichol and White Dog


The acclaim from this came from it's supposed no-punches-held view of racism, but I am pretty amazed that it garnered any sort of recognition at all, it even got a Criterion release. It is a white dog that kills black people. Unless I am missing something there are no hidden metaphors other than the obvious ones. I thought the script and performances were bad, but the movie takes itself way too seriously to be a campy horror movie.

My rating system is going to be:

1 star: Really disliked, very few if any redeeming qualities, no interest in ever watching again
2 stars: Didn't find worth watching, has some positive qualities but not enough to make it enjoyable
3 stars: Worth the watch, not worthy of a lot of praise but still an enjoyable film
4 stars: Really enjoyed the movie, if people still bought DVDs this is something I would want to buy, worth seeing multiple times
5 stars: More or less a classic, an all-time favorite, etc.

The King of Comedy

Directed by Martin Scorsese
Starring Robert De Niro and Jerry Lewis

An underrated film by Scorsese and and underrated performance by De Niro. While it doesn't rank among the top movies for either of them, it certainly deserves to be remembered. It has aged very well and the satire of celebrity worship and the American media have stayed very relevant, especially considering how deeply the movie is rooted in the culture of when it was made. It isn't laugh out loud funny, but remains darkly entertaining throughout and builds to an excellent climax. Jerry Lewis does a great job in an unexpected role.

Good stuff. Somehow I've never watched "The King of Comedy", keep meaning to. Never had any interest in "White Dog." I am a huge "Porky's" fan so I would recommend that if you haven't seen it. Aside from that one (& Fast Times), there were some other sex comedies that I liked in '82: The Last American Virgin, Night Shift (Michael Keaton & Henry Winkler as pimps and Shelley Long - Diane from Cheers - as one of their girls, better than it sounds) and Zapped! (c'mon man, it's Scott Baio)

Can't wait to see what you think of "Cat People". That's all I'll say about that.

I really need some more fun camp movies on my radar since when compiling my list it was kind of hard to filter out the bad movies worth watching unless they're explicitly suggested, so thanks for those.

I decided I'm going to do 4-6 movies a year at a time to keep things moving so I don't get sick of an era too quickly.

Easily my favorite part of the movie is how well realized and believable the world portrayed is. It is remarkable how well it's aged over 30 years and the super dark neo-noir cinematography looks great. I couldn't buy into Harrison Ford as Deckard though, seemed like he was miscast pretty badly and the film would have been much better off with a different choice. It deserves credit for having a deeper and more complex aspiration than "futuristic action movie", but I thought the narrative was a bit messy and the pacing was not perfect. I can see why it is a cult classic easily, but it's just not for me.

Pretty much exactly my feelings except saying "the pacing was not perfect" is being way too kind. The plot lurched forward slower than a broken legged zombie (the Romero type).

Blade Runner was a chore to watch. Only fun part was when I was trying to guess who it was that the doctor looked like(turned out to be Lou Reed)

Script was pretty good, I appreciate when comedies pace their jokes well and don't try to go over the top with every line. I do think they could have gone for a few more though with a duo of Aykroyd and Murphy. Soundtrack was great, Jamie Lee Curtis has nice boobies. Not much else to say.

In Bruges is easily my favorite comedy ever. I can barely tolerate Colin Farrell in almost all of his other roles, but I love him in this. It is impossible not to like Brendan Gleeson.

Other than the last couple of scenes the atmosphere was really impressively creepy for a low-budget horror film. The acting was passable and there were very few lines that made me cringe which is a rarity for horror movies. The premise is not original by any means but again is effectively creepy and the cheese only shines through on occaision. Nobody that watches this will be blown away, but when you look at it in comparison to the numerous similar horror movies that have come out it is hard to be disappointed with its effort.
