Bears Fire Lovie Smith

I see then doing what they did when they hired Lovie and bringing in a defensive coordinator like Horton from the Cardinals.

I'm not so sure the Bears are targeting established names. I'm thinking Emery is targeting guys like Mike McCoy

I think in a year when so many teams fired coaches, the Bears should have given Lovie Smith one more year. The competition for coaches is going to be tough this spring, though, to be fair, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago market are among the most attractive landing spots in the NFL.

New GM, Smith has had a bunch of chances, started out great and blew it. He had to make the playoffs and win a game to stay on in my mind. Now, they need to go out and find an offensive-minded coach to jump start things there. They have a great talent base for whoever takes over.

I like Smith. Feel bad for him. I'm not a bears fan, but from a short distance (little to the north), I think a lot of Smiths O problems are on the previous GM not getting better personal. And the collapse this year, I attribute to the difference in difficulty of schedule along with a weak O Line. The second part of the Bears schedule was a lot harder and the weak O Line couldn't hold up. Now I put blame on the GM for the weak O Line. I don't know much about this Emery guy, but I think he himself explained in his latest press conference why he, as GM, didn't address O Line needs this year. He as GM explains why the O Line wasn't addressed even though it needed addressing, so I don't see how you can blame this years O problems on Smith.

These are just my thoughts from a division rivals view. I don't follow the bears nearly as much as I follow my own team. (I can say my own team cause I OWN STOCK).

Then they should bring in Tim Tebow and install the 2010 Denver offense... Hell its been as successful in the postseason as Jay Cutler has ever been.

I'll preface the rest of this by saying that in general I think coaches are fired far too often (especially in the NFL where they do not even control personnel)...

I look at this move just like when the Jags fired Coughlin and the Panthers fired Fox. Both franchises have been reeling since those coaches got fired, both moved onto better situations and are doing well.

There's a finite number of quality head coaches. Lovie is one of them. He's had 9 seasons as the head coach and he posted 4 double digit win seasons and 5 winning seasons. His only "bad" season was his first (5-11). During that period the NFC North has been one of the best divisions in football. Green Bay might be the best franchise in the NFC right now, Minnesotta has been good for most of that stretch.

You look at the roster and it's pretty unspectacular. Cutler is fringe average. Forte is alright, but he's pretty worn for an NFL runningback. Marshall is a stud, but the rest of the receivers stink. The OL stinks.

To me, this is a completely different scenario than Andy Reid or Rex Ryan (next season). Reid was in charge of personnel and the Eagles have been on a pretty steady decline. It was time to part ways. I think Reid may succeed elsewhere still, but both sides need a change. After the Jets stink next season Rex will get canned because his schtick wore thin after those first two seasons.

When you look at the 7 firings, 5 of them make a lot of sense. 2 of them (Wisenhunt, Lovie), don't. Of those, I think Chicago will have easily the biggest fallout because they were still a good team this season and he still had the support of the players. It's going to be very tough for a new coach to come in and win that locker room.

As a Lions fan, I'm really happy about this move. They fired Lovie Smith because they could not find a QB. The Bears issue is that Jay Cutler sucks. He has a pretty solid supporting cast (Marshall, Forte and a great defense) and his numbers are average. They changed coordinators and philosophies. Their OL is weak and Cutler is 60% (or worse) passer that turns the ball over a ton. Getting rid of Lovie Smith isn't gong to change that.

Also, Lovie is the one constant with the rock solid d. I'm hoping that takes a giant shit next year with the coach they hire.
