Beaver Fever: An Oregon State Dynasty

JACQUIZZ!!!!! u beasted it up, love all the depth that goes into this chise. keep it goin emac

Thanks. Quizz had a big game but WSU sucks big time.

Fuck that, too bad you're missing out on winning the Pac-10.

Oh well. That's life. The Ducks have completely owned the Pac-10 going undefeated in the conference. Maybe we can win the Civil War. There is still a very small chance of Oregon getting to the National Title game so maybe we can play spoiler. But I'm doubting that Oregon will have that opportunity and I doubt that I'll pull off the upset. But you never know. The Civil War is always a huge rivalry game but it does kind of suck that there is really nothing on the line.

Oxford, MS - Only the SEC West was on the line for LSU and Ole Miss in probably one of the biggest games in Oxford in years. Rebel fans were fired up but a cold, rainy evening led to a slugfest as both teams struggled offensively. It was Ole Miss HB Brandon Bolden that got the Rebels on the board first when he scored on a 13-yard toss, breaking an LSU SS Harry Coleman tackle a long the way to put the Rebels on top 7-0. But it would be LSU HB Charles Scott that would run over three Ole Miss defenders on a 38-yard TD scamper to tie the game 7-7.

Then in the 2nd quarter, LSU SS Harry Coleman redeemed himself by forcing a fumble on Rebel HB Brandon Bolden that the Tigers recovered. However, it would only lead to a 44-yard field goal attempt that fell short of the crossbar. Then Bolden would leave the game on the ensuing possession with an abdominal strain that should keep him out two weeks. The Tigers would break the gridlock when Mississippi brought an all-out blitz on the true feshman QB Russell Shepard, but the freshman was able to get rid of it to TE Richard Dickson who brok a tackle and housed the 56-yard reception to put the Tigers in front 14-7. Ole Miss would tack on a field goal just before the end of the half to make it 14-10 LSU at halftime.

Defense dominated the 3rd quarter on both sides as the game saw five consecutive punts. But finally Shepard gunned a deep pass to WR Brandon LaFell for a gain of 49 yards to the Rebel 14-yard line. Though the Rebel defense held strong to force LSU to settle for a 27-yard field goal to put the Tigers ahead 17-10.

In the 4th quarter, the LSU secondary took over the game as Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead could not connect with any of his receivers. The Bayou Bengals were glued to every receiver and making plays all over the field to knock down passes. Behind some hard-nosed running by HB Charles Scott, the Tigers marched down into the red zone but Ole Miss came up with a huge goal line stand to force another LSU chip shot but LSU was now ahead 20-10 with only 4:23 left to go in the game. Then disaster struck for Ole Miss when Snead was picked off by sophomore CB Patrick Peterson who returned it all the way for a pick-six to put LSU up 26-10 because of a extra point attempt that was doinked off the upright. Snead, trying to make a play and under tremendous pressure would throw two more interceptions. With the win, LSU will win the SEC West and play Florida in the SEC Championship.

Chris: We are here in Charlottesville for an in-state rivalry game that will have major implications for both Virginia Tech and Virginia. The winner wins the ACC Coastal and will meet Maryland in the ACC Championship as the Terps have already clinched the Atlantic. It was actually this Virginia squad that handed the Terps' their only loss on the season but can they beat a highly favored Hokie team today? Another conference that will be decided today is the Mountain West as the winner of the Utah-BYU game will be Moutain West champions. For the Utes, it could mean another trip to a BCS bowl.

Selections

#21 Clemson (8-3) @ #12 South Carolina (8-3)
Kirk: USC Lee: USC

#11 Utah (10-1) @ #24 BYU (8-3)
Kirk: BYU Lee: Utah

Chris:The "Holy War" down there in Utah should be a terrific game. If you get a chance, tune in for that one. That should be a fun game. Okay, before we get to this one, Erin Andrews has an injury report for the Hokies. Erin...

Easide_262_thumb_180x246.jpg

Erin: Everybody knows about VT WR Boykin being out for the season but there is a small chance that the Hokies could get their starting LT Ed Wang back today, but he is still being considered a game-time decision by the staff. Chris, back to you....

Chris: Thanks Erin. If the Hokies get Wang back today, that could really help Tyrod Taylor. Alright, the headgear is here. Time for your picks.

Kirk_Herbstreit.jpg

Kirk: I think the x-factor in today's game will be VT HB Darren Evans, running behind All-American OG Sergio Render. Evans should be able have a big game against a rather weak UVA defensive line. But I think with Boykin out and Taylor with shaky pass protection, the Cavs will stack the box to try and stop Evans and force Taylor to beat them. If Evans has a big day on the ground, the Hokies should roll to an easy victory. However, I don't like the way the Hokies tend to play down to their competition. On paper Virginia should not be able to compete but I know they will be fired up and ready to go with so much on the line. I think they catch an overconfident VT team and beat them today. UVA wins a close game today. *crowd cheers*

corso_color.jpg

Lee: Double...no wait, make that a triple not so fast! There's no way this Cavalier team has any chance to win today. No chance! *crowd boos* The starting QB for Virginia, Jameel Sewell has 17 interceptions on the year and only six touchdowns and he's going up against a great Hokie defense. The Hokies should win by at least three touchdowns. I say the Hokies steamroll Virginia. Hokies win big! *Lee puts on the Hokie headgear as the crowd continues to boo*

Wild Turkey Sparks Hokies to Victory
VT-UVA.jpg

VT HB Ryan Williams hands the ball to HB Kenny Lewis for a 74-yard TD run.

Charlottesville, VA - The state of Virginia was in a frenzy as the Battle for the Commonwealth win decide who would be headed to the ACC Championship to play against Maryland. Both teams struggled to find any offense in the 1st quarter and Virginia would take a 7-3 lead when VT Dyrell Roberts on a punt return got by one defender, but whlie trying to spin out of another tackle, fumbled the ball which the Cavaliers returned for a TD.

Despite the Hokies being such huge favorite, the Hokies came out and were unable to do anything offensively. Finally, on a Wild Turkey play, HB Darren Evans handed the ball off to Ryan Williams coming on an end around and was able to get outside to house it for a TD. But a holding call would bring it back. Virginia would take a surprising 7-6 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Noting the earlier success on the Wild Turkey, the Hokies decdided to stop futilely running up the gut. Evans already had 20 carries at halftime but not much to show for it but being absolutely exhausted. But out of the Wild Turkey, Ryan Williams handed the ball off to HB Kenny Lewis who got outside and took it to the house for a 74-yard TD scamper to put the Hokies up 14-7. As HB Josh Oglesby also scored out of the Wild Tukey on the 2-point conversion.

Later, VT QB Tyrod Taylor gunned it deep to WR Brandon Dillard on a post over the middle that he came down with and was brought down as he crossed the goal line on the 43-yard TD reception to put VT up 21-7. Then VT HB Ryan Williams would find some running room to gain 59 yards to set up a 6-yard TD scamper for HB Josh Ogelsby as the Hokies were now up 27-7 because of a missed PAT.

Finally, UVA QB Jemeel Sewell put a good drive together and would throw a jump ball up to WR Kris Burd for a 6-yard TD pass. But UVA would also miss the PAT to make it 27-13. Virginia Tech would tack on a 47-yard field goal early in the 4th quarter to go ahead 30-13. But Sewell in the no huddle led another scoring drive, throwing a 24-yard TD to cut the lead to 30-20. Then the Cavs recovered the onside kick but were then held to a three-and-out. It appeared that the Hokies would be able run the clock out but in the red zone with 1:16 left in the game, VT HB Kenny Lewis fumbled which the Cavs returned for a TD to suddenly make it only 30-27. It would all come down to the onside kick but this time the Hokies recovered to send Virginia Tech to the ACC Championship.

Chris: We are here in the beautiful Pacific Norwthwest in Eugene for the Civil War. *crowd goes wild* This is one of the most heated in-state rivalries on the west coast. Well, the Chip Kelly era got off to a bit of a rocky start with a loss to Boise State on the opening Thursday night on the smurf turf. But now the Ducks have won ten in a row and have already clinched the Pac-10. At the very least, they are already headed to the Rose Bowl. *crowd cheers* Last year it was the Beavers *crowd boos* that had an opportunity to go to the Rose Bowl for the first time in forever but Oregon just absolutely housed Oregon State at Reser Stadium with a 65-38 beat down. *crowd cheers*

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CDU_jAcmkS8&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CDU_jAcmkS8&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Chris: So the Beavers will be looking for revenge however that really can't happen because the result of the game really won't matter unless Florida goes down in the SEC championship and with the way this year has gone, that could not surprise anybody. So the Ducks could be playing for a possible chance to be in the national championship. *crowd cheers.* So the Beavers could play the spoiler *crowd boos* today with a win but we won't know until after the conference championships next week. The best Oregon State can hope for is to make the Holiday Bowl with a win here. *laughter from the crowd* But for that to happen, not only would the Beavs have to beat the Ducks but Cal would have to lose to Washington. *more laughter from the crowd* So in all likelihood, Oregon State will be heading back to the Sun Bowl. *more laughter* But despite all that, this is still a major rivarly game and the winner gets bragging rights. We'll get to some of the other games taking place on the final week of the regular season and then make our selections for the Civil War...

#25 Wisconsin (8-3) @ #18 Hawai'i (10-1)
Kirk: Haw Lee: Wisc

Chris: Alright. Time to make the picks guys.

Kirk_Herbstreit.jpg

Kirk: There is only one thing that concerns me today if I'm a Duck fan. And that is the fact that the Beavers have the #1 rushing defense in the nation. If the Beavers can force Masoli to have to beat them through the air, then OSU might keep this one close. But I don't think Oregon is going to have any problems carving up the OSU secondary and I think OSU will be unable to stop Blount from running over them. I look for a big, big win for the Ducks today. *crowd goes nuts* They need to really pour it on if they want to leap Florida.

corso_color.jpg

Lee: Kirk, I am in 100 percent agreement with you. Last year was down there in Corvallis and they lost...what was the score again?...oh yeah...65-38 and that was at the Beavers' place. Now it will be in front of these crazy Duck fans. Eh...forget about it! The Beavers are in real trouble today. The best they can hope for is to keep it close but that is not gonna happen. Ducks will win huge today. *Lee puts on the Duck headgear as the crowd roars with quackers heard in the background* Go Ducks!

#15 Oregon State (8-3) @ #3 Oregon (10-1)

Eugene, OR - It was a winter wonderland at Autzen Stadium for the Civil War between the bitter in-state rivals, Oregon State and Oregon. The temperature was a freezing 12 degrees and snow was still falling, but it had little effect in dampering the spirits of the Duck fans. Oregon came in as one of the hottest teams in the nation and extremely confident. The Beavers would try and avenge their brutal loss to the Ducks last season that cost Oregon State a chance to go to the Rose Bowl. However, that Oregon State team was without HB Jacquizz Rodgers. Now the stud tailback is healthy so the Ducks would face Quizz for the first time.

Autzen Stadium was rocking at kick off but OSU Reggie Dunn silenced the crowd with a nice return to midfield to set up the Beavers with great field position. However, Oregon State could not take advantage of the opportunity as they would go three-and-out to start the game. The Ducks wasted very little time to score as HB LeGarrette Blount broke a run to the outside. With only one guy to beat, Blount shoved SS Lance Mitchell aside as the crowd roared to an even higher noise level as Blount took it 53 yards to the house to put Oregon on top 7-0 just like that. Not exactly how the Beavers wanted to start the game.

CivilWar1-1.jpg

Oregon HB LeGarrette Blount breaks loose for a 53-yard TD run.

The next possession for Oregon State would not start much better as QB Lyle Moevao was sacked by DT Simi Toeaina. After the sack, Moevao was rolling around on the ground in serious pain, holding his throwing shoulder. The senior Moevao would leave the field and in came fellow senior QB Sean Canfield. On his first snap, Canfield hit WR James Rodgers crossing wide open over the middle of the field for a gain of 27 yards. Later, on playaction, Canfield threw a laser to James Rodgers in the back of the end zone for a 12-yard TD to tie the game 7-7.

CivilWar2-1.jpg

OSU QB Sean Canfield throws a laser in the back of the end zone to WR James Rodgers for a 12-yard TD.

Oregon would be stopped in their tracks on the ensuing possession with a three-and-out. With the crowd silenced a tiny bit, OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers spun out of a tackle, ran through another, and was not caught until he had gained 40 yards. Despite the electrifying run, OSU was still forced to punt. On the ensuing possession for Oregon, OSU defensive coordinator Mark Banker dialed a prefect blitz that brought big pressure on QB Jeremiah Masoli as he was hit in throwing motion for an easy interception for OLB Keith Pankey. As the 2nd quarter opened, the Beavers were in business to take the lead. However, the Ducks were able to force only a 32-yard field goal and the Beavers took a 10-7 lead.

Both teams started to stuggle offensively as the weather conditions were making passing difficult for both teams. Though the Ducks would manage to find themselves in the red zone but on 3rd-and-goal inside the 5-yard line, Blount was stuffed by the OSU defense. So the Ducks had to settle for a 20-yard chipshot to tie the game 10-10.

At this point, the crowd had pretty much been taken out of the game but the Oregon defense continued to make life tough for Canfield. The backup senior QB would try to connect with WR Darrell Catchings on a deep pass. But Canfield was not able to get enough on it as the ball hung up in the air where it was easily intercepted by CB Willie Glasper. But Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli turned around and turned over the ball to the Beavers when he was picked off by SS Lance Mitchell off of a deflection when WR Davis dropped the ball. But Oregon State was forced to punt just before halftime as the two rivals were tied at halftime.

The Ducks had to feel nervous to start the 2nd half, and Oregon would be held to a three-and-out on their opening possession of the 3rd quarter. James Rodgers fielded the punt return but foolishly did not call for a fair catch. As a result, Rodgers was lit up, fumbling the ball which the Ducks returned for a TD. Suddenly, the Ducks were back in front 17-10 and Autzen was on fire again.

CivilWar3-1.jpg

OSU WR James Rodgers fumbles the ball on the punt return, which is returned for a Duck TD.

At moments like this, Oregon State was fortunate to have a senior QB directing the offense because less experienced signal callers would have been feeling the pressure. But Canfield countered right back with a nice drive. Inside the red zone, Canfield would connect with TE John Reese in the flat who walked in for a 17-yard TD to tie the game 17-17.

CivilWar4-1.jpg

OSU TE John Reese walks in for a 17-yard TD reception.

Then Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli would try to throw deep but the ball also hung in the air too long for him as OSU FS Suaesi Tuimaunei was able to get over and make the pick.

CivilWar5-1.jpg

OSU FS Suaesi Tuimaunei picks off Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli.

Canfield would take advantage of the opportunity, engineering another good looking drive as the Beavers marched down the field methodically. HB Jacquizz Rodgers would cap it off at the goal line with a 1-yard TD carry to put OSU back in the lead 24-17.

CivilWar6-1.jpg

OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers with a 1-yard goal line TD run.

Oregon continued to be symied by the Beaver defense. Aside from the long run by Blount early in the game, the running game for the Ducks had been completely shut down. Though it did appear that head coach Chip Kelly had abandoned the run game as Blount still only had single digit carries. The Ducks would fail to get a first down again as Masoli threw another errant pass.

The Beavers had the ball to start the 4th quarter, but on 3rd-and-1, Quizz Rodgers was stuffed. Now it was Quizz that was down on the field in pain as he would leave the field also with a shoulder injury. So now Quizz, the biggest playmaker for Oregon State was hurt and the Beavers had to punt after a three-and-out. On the ensuing possession for Oregon, WR Jeff Maehl got the ball on an end around. But Maehl was met in the backfield by OSU OLB Keith Pankey who was able to strip the ball loose which Oregon State recovered.

CivilWar7.jpg

OSU OLB Keith Pankey strips the ball away from Duck WR Jeff Maehl for a Beaver fumble recovery.

The Beavers took over with terrific field position. And it was indeed the bigger bruising RB Ryan McCants that was in for the injured Jacquizz Rodgers. But the OSU offense did not seem to miss a beat. McCants got the handoff and absoutely bulled right through Duck LB Matthews to scamper in for a 28-yard TD. Unfortunately, Justin Kahut missed the extra point so the Beavers were still ahead 30-17.

CivilWar8.jpg

OSU RB Ryan McCants bulls through Matthews for a 28-yard TD.

Oregon needed to respond quickly and despite the fumble, Chip Kelly wanted to get the ball in WR Jeff Maehl's hands again. This time on an option, Masoli faked a handoff to Blount, ran to the outside, pitched to Maehl who got outside and was off to the races to house a 61-yard TD as Autzen roared back to life. The Ducks now only found themselves down 30-24.

CivilWar9.jpg

Oregon WR Jeff Maehl takes it 61 yards to the house.

Momentum had been regained by Oregon but the Beavers countered with a long, physical drive with McCants. Then inside the red zone, Canfield on a playaction found an open TE Howard Croom in the end zone to put the Beavers up 36-24 with only 3:34 reamining in the game. Oregon State would try for two but McCants was stuffed.

CivilWar10.jpg

OSU QB Sean Canfield finds TE Howard Croom open in the end zone.

It was now up to Masoli if the Ducks were going to keep the national championship hopes alive. On a 4th down play Masoli would be sacked by OSU DT Stephen Paea. Fans started filing out of Autzen and the OSU sideline erupted in celebration. The Beavs would take some time off the clock and Kahut would clank a 46-yarder off the crossbar. But Masoli would be picked off by OSU MLB David Pa'aluhi and the Beavers could celebrate a victory over the Ducks in Autzen Stadium.

Erin Andrews: Great win today coach. The Giant Killers strike again. And this time against your rival. How do you guys get up for these top three opponents? This is the fourth year in a row that the Beavers have beaten a top three team. What does this win mean to you?

MikeRileyinterviewimages.jpg

Mike Riley: It's always big for us to win the Civil War especially here in this tough environment. I really don't know why or how we seem to play so well against top 3 teams. Oregon is a tremendously talented team and for us to play the way we did is just really great.

Erin: You lost Lyle Moevao pretty early in the game and in came Sean Canfield. He filled in nicely, throwing three TDs in these weather conditions was pretty impressive. First, what is the status on Moevao?

Mike: It looks like Lyle has a bruised shoulder. We're not really sure how long he'll be out so he will probably be day-to-day.

Erin: Does that mean that Canfield may have taken over the job? He looked pretty solid today.

Mike: Well, he did play well. But it is too early for me to make that decision just yet.

Erin: Unfortunately, Quizz also left the game. Can you tell me what his status is?

Mike: Yeah. It looks like he also banged up his shoulder but I'm pretty certain he should be ready to go for the bowl game.

Erin: Ryan McCants made some nice runs as his replacement.

Mike: Yeah. He sure did Erin. I was really happy to see him out there working hard for every yard. He's kind of the thunder to Quizz's lightning so to speak. He really played well when we needed him.

Erin: I think the real story was your defense. They did give up some big plays but your defense pretty much shut down Blount after that big run at the beginning.

Mike: I was a bit concerned after that run by Blount. It kind of felt like "here we go again" but I have to give the credit to my defensive coordinator Mark Banker. He came up with a great gameplan to shut down a really potent offense. And these kids executed that on the field today really, really well. I'm really proud of these guys today.

Erin: Good luck in the bowl game and go celebrate coach.

Mike: Thanks Erin. Always a pleasure.

Chris: Welcome to Atlanta where in the Georgia Dome, the SEC championship will be played out. It will be a rematch between Florida and LSU. The Gators got the best of the Tigers down in Baton Rouge as they really dominated that game. But the Gators will have to make it back-to-back wins against the Bayou Bengals if they are going to make it to the national championship against Notre Dame.

Well, no surprise the final week of the season ended with a big upset as Oregon State was able to defeat their rival Oregon in the Civil War. So Oregon is out of the race but is still heading to the Rose Bowl. Not a bad consolation prize. So it will be Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions who will be the biggest LSU fans today. Because a win by LSU would likely jump Penn State ahead of Florida and send the Nittany Lions to the national title game against Notre Dame.

So it is only the SEC championship that has any significance on the national picture but we will get to the other intriguing conference championship games this weekend.

Conference Championships

Kirk: Tex Lee: Tex

Chris: The Longhorns have been decimated with injuries but they are getting a lot of their key guys back and they will have Colt McCoy today so Texas should roll. Alright. Time to make your picks for SEC.

Kirk_Herbstreit.jpg

Kirk: There is no question that LSU has the horses to compete on offense. But I fail to see how LSU will stop Florida from scoring as the Gators ranked #1 in points-per-game. The real matchup though is the fact that LSU has a freshman QB in Russell Shepard who will be going up against the best defense in the nation led by MLB Brandon Spikes, DE Carlos Dunlap, and S Major Wright. Shepard has played sensational and is going to be special but he will struggle today. Gators win decisively.

corso_color.jpg

Lee: Don't count out the freshman Shepard. He really has been terrific. The kid threw 12 TDs and only one interception. As a result, LSU is #2 in turnover differential with a +16. That's not too bad with a freshman leading the offense. If they're going to have any chance today, that trend will have to continue, but going up against such an imposing defense is going to be tough. This game will be closer than the experts think but...*Lee puts on the Gator headgear and does the Gator chomp* Go Gators!

LOL. Since you've played the Ducks a few times, do you ever seem to notice that Oregon hardly ever runs the ball in the game? In real life their spread offense is a run first offense. When the Ducks are good, they are one of the top rushing teams in the nation. But when ever I play them, their tailback rarely ever has above ten carries. Though when I played them, Masoli did end their possessions prematurely with four interceptions and aside from the big run, Blount was totally shut down so I guess they just gave up.

Very rarely. It seems like they play more West Coast then there spread run. They have a new quarterback and halfback this season, so I couldn't go back and tell you stats from a few seasons ago, but from what I remember they rarely ran. I play them week 2 in my dynasty so I'll get back at you with this.

(top) Gator QB John Brantley, in for Tim Tebow, scores on a 9-yard run up the middle. (bottom left) Brantley connects with WR Riley Cooper on a 65-yard TD. (bottom right) Cooper stiff arms LSU FS McCray and takes it 56 yards to the house.

Atlanta, GA - It looked like it would not end well for the Gators when their all-world QB Tim Tebow left the game with a broken thumb. So it would be up to John Brantley to lead Florida to an SEC championship. With Tebow out, the Gators struggled to find any rhythm offensively. The Tigers would also get a bad break when HB Charles Scott left the game with a bruised elbow, but LSU would go up 7-3 in the 2nd quarter when WR Mitchell scored on a 16-yard jet sweep. But Brantley would hit WR Riley Cooper on a short out route, and Cooper was able to break a tackle and gain 46 yards. That would set up a 9-yard TD run up the middle for Brantley to put the Gators on top 10-7. Brantley would connect with Cooper again on a deep corner route at the sideline. Cooper caught the ball over his shoulders in stride and took it in for a 65-yard TD to put Florida up 17-7 at halftime.

LSU's offense could not accomplish anything on offense. The lone bright spot was the running game. HB Keiland Williams was putting together a great game but freshman QB Russell Shepard struggled. Though the Gator defense did not sack Shepard once, they were pressuring the true freshman to throw before he wanted to. Brantley would hook up with Cooper again in the 4th quarter on a short pass over the middle where Cooper was able to stiff arm LSU FS McCray to the ground and take it 56 yards to the house as the Gators would crush the Tigers 27-7. The win should almost definitely send the Gators to Pasadena to play the Irish for the BCS national championship.
