Eugene, OR - It was a winter wonderland at Autzen Stadium for the Civil War between the bitter in-state rivals, Oregon State and Oregon. The temperature was a freezing 12 degrees and snow was still falling, but it had little effect in dampering the spirits of the Duck fans. Oregon came in as one of the hottest teams in the nation and extremely confident. The Beavers would try and avenge their brutal loss to the Ducks last season that cost Oregon State a chance to go to the Rose Bowl. However, that Oregon State team was without HB Jacquizz Rodgers. Now the stud tailback is healthy so the Ducks would face Quizz for the first time.
Autzen Stadium was rocking at kick off but OSU Reggie Dunn silenced the crowd with a nice return to midfield to set up the Beavers with great field position. However, Oregon State could not take advantage of the opportunity as they would go three-and-out to start the game. The Ducks wasted very little time to score as HB LeGarrette Blount broke a run to the outside. With only one guy to beat, Blount shoved SS Lance Mitchell aside as the crowd roared to an even higher noise level as Blount took it 53 yards to the house to put Oregon on top
7-0 just like that. Not exactly how the Beavers wanted to start the game.

The next possession for Oregon State would not start much better as QB Lyle Moevao was sacked by DT Simi Toeaina. After the sack, Moevao was rolling around on the ground in serious pain, holding his throwing shoulder. The senior Moevao would leave the field and in came fellow senior QB Sean Canfield. On his first snap, Canfield hit WR James Rodgers crossing wide open over the middle of the field for a gain of 27 yards. Later, on playaction, Canfield threw a laser to James Rodgers in the back of the end zone for a 12-yard TD to tie the game
7-7.

Oregon would be stopped in their tracks on the ensuing possession with a three-and-out. With the crowd silenced a tiny bit, OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers spun out of a tackle, ran through another, and was not caught until he had gained 40 yards. Despite the electrifying run, OSU was still forced to punt. On the ensuing possession for Oregon, OSU defensive coordinator Mark Banker dialed a prefect blitz that brought big pressure on QB Jeremiah Masoli as he was hit in throwing motion for an easy interception for OLB Keith Pankey. As the 2nd quarter opened, the Beavers were in business to take the lead. However, the Ducks were able to force only a 32-yard field goal and the Beavers took a
10-7 lead.
Both teams started to stuggle offensively as the weather conditions were making passing difficult for both teams. Though the Ducks would manage to find themselves in the red zone but on 3rd-and-goal inside the 5-yard line, Blount was stuffed by the OSU defense. So the Ducks had to settle for a 20-yard chipshot to tie the game
10-10.
At this point, the crowd had pretty much been taken out of the game but the Oregon defense continued to make life tough for Canfield. The backup senior QB would try to connect with WR Darrell Catchings on a deep pass. But Canfield was not able to get enough on it as the ball hung up in the air where it was easily intercepted by CB Willie Glasper. But Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli turned around and turned over the ball to the Beavers when he was picked off by SS Lance Mitchell off of a deflection when WR Davis dropped the ball. But Oregon State was forced to punt just before halftime as the two rivals were tied at halftime.
The Ducks had to feel nervous to start the 2nd half, and Oregon would be held to a three-and-out on their opening possession of the 3rd quarter. James Rodgers fielded the punt return but foolishly did not call for a fair catch. As a result, Rodgers was lit up, fumbling the ball which the Ducks returned for a TD. Suddenly, the Ducks were back in front
17-10 and Autzen was on fire again.

At moments like this, Oregon State was fortunate to have a senior QB directing the offense because less experienced signal callers would have been feeling the pressure. But Canfield countered right back with a nice drive. Inside the red zone, Canfield would connect with TE John Reese in the flat who walked in for a 17-yard TD to tie the game
17-17.

Then Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli would try to throw deep but the ball also hung in the air too long for him as OSU FS Suaesi Tuimaunei was able to get over and make the pick.

Canfield would take advantage of the opportunity, engineering another good looking drive as the Beavers marched down the field methodically. HB Jacquizz Rodgers would cap it off at the goal line with a 1-yard TD carry to put OSU back in the lead
24-17.

Oregon continued to be symied by the Beaver defense. Aside from the long run by Blount early in the game, the running game for the Ducks had been completely shut down. Though it did appear that head coach Chip Kelly had abandoned the run game as Blount still only had single digit carries. The Ducks would fail to get a first down again as Masoli threw another errant pass.
The Beavers had the ball to start the 4th quarter, but on 3rd-and-1, Quizz Rodgers was stuffed. Now it was Quizz that was down on the field in pain as he would leave the field also with a shoulder injury. So now Quizz, the biggest playmaker for Oregon State was hurt and the Beavers had to punt after a three-and-out. On the ensuing possession for Oregon, WR Jeff Maehl got the ball on an end around. But Maehl was met in the backfield by OSU OLB Keith Pankey who was able to strip the ball loose which Oregon State recovered.

The Beavers took over with terrific field position. And it was indeed the bigger bruising RB Ryan McCants that was in for the injured Jacquizz Rodgers. But the OSU offense did not seem to miss a beat. McCants got the handoff and absoutely bulled right through Duck LB Matthews to scamper in for a 28-yard TD. Unfortunately, Justin Kahut missed the extra point so the Beavers were still ahead
30-17.

Oregon needed to respond quickly and despite the fumble, Chip Kelly wanted to get the ball in WR Jeff Maehl's hands again. This time on an option, Masoli faked a handoff to Blount, ran to the outside, pitched to Maehl who got outside and was off to the races to house a 61-yard TD as Autzen roared back to life. The Ducks now only found themselves down
30-24.

Momentum had been regained by Oregon but the Beavers countered with a long, physical drive with McCants. Then inside the red zone, Canfield on a playaction found an open TE Howard Croom in the end zone to put the Beavers up
36-24 with only 3:34 reamining in the game. Oregon State would try for two but McCants was stuffed.

It was now up to Masoli if the Ducks were going to keep the national championship hopes alive. On a 4th down play Masoli would be sacked by OSU DT Stephen Paea. Fans started filing out of Autzen and the OSU sideline erupted in celebration. The Beavs would take some time off the clock and Kahut would clank a 46-yarder off the crossbar. But Masoli would be picked off by OSU MLB David Pa'aluhi and the Beavers could celebrate a victory over the Ducks in Autzen Stadium.
