I still don't know what to make of Coughlin. He is a good coach, but sometimes he's a total meathead, and his teams are wildly inconsistent. The inconsistency is probably due to Coughlin's inability to adapt. He reminds me of Chuck Knox or Marty Schottenheimer. When all the pieces are in place, he can get his team to win. But if one part is missing, thats it. Coughlin would routinely get out-coached by Jeff Fisher, FWIW.
The one thing that's been clearly talked about the past month that may be part of that is the defense. Heading into the Jet game, the defensive captains/leaders/whatever spoke with DC Perry Fewell and aired out all their issues. He cut down on the amount of zones, called more man coverages and whatever else.
Sure, the fact it took them until Week 16 to do that sorta thing is mind boggling but Coughlin was able to light a fire under this teams ass at the right time.
The one weakness of Coughlin's this year was his use of challenges. For the first time. Usually, he's one of the most successful coaches with them but not this year. Still, for reasons that have been talked about all season -- this team was 7-7, 6-6 at one point after being 6-2....they got healthy and gelled at the right time.
Braylon Edwards, cut. Josh Morgan, broken leg. Ted Ginn Jr, out with injury.
Why don't you go be an expert and pore over the roster to find a better candidate?
Looking over the Niners regular season, Ginn did the majority of punt returns. DB Reggie Smith had 4 and Williams had 2.
I just know that with the Giants (who by no means have someone even close to Ginn in the return game), they've been shuffling guys back and forth all season. Aaron Ross, Will Blackmon, Antrel Rolle, Domenik Hixon and Victor Cruz each have had time returning punts. In the post-season, it was Ross' gig and ironically against the ball hawking Niners ST, he was instructed to catch the ball and get to the floor as quickly and securely as possible.
With the two fumbles, I see it as obviously having faith in the guy from Harbaugh's perspective....but in OT of the NFC Championship game, after fumbling earlier in the game....tell the kid to fair catch it.
