Best Rivalry in College Football

I have high hopes in Shannon. He just needs to get it together, really. Nix is gone (thank god) so it can only go up from here. It's all upto shannon though.
 
I'm just jumping in to page 3 and posting off the top of my head, I haven't read through the thread yet but these are the biggest to me:

Alabama-Auburn (severely underrated IMO)
Ohio St.-Michigan (undeniable hatred)
Army-Navy (classic)
Texas-Oklahoma (most entertaining)
FSU-Miami (what can I say?)
 
RRS kind of sucks because its so early

OSU/MI isnt that great because the big 10 is weak and OSU keeps getting wacked it the NC game

Best rivalry would have to be the SEC teams all beating each other up
 
UM vs OSU has the most interest in it? Why, because it's the big 10 and the Big 10 conference "area" has the highest population. It also pits two states. Ohio is completely OSU (outside of little pockets in the NW and the far south) and Michigan is almost entirely Michigan (discounting the Lansin area).

OSU and Michigan fans also dominate Illinois and Indiana from a Football stanpoint. When I lived in Chicago there was more UM/OSU gear than Northwestern and Illinois combined. Lots of transplants.

Then obviously you have the history and the fact its typically the defacto Big 10 championship game (if not more).

In terms of pure competition you really can't seperate any of the big ones. Florida/Georgia, Texas/Oklahoma, Florida/Tennesse are all pretty good. The Iron Bowl hasn't really been competitive for a while and F$U/Miami has fallen.

It really just depends on how you describe "best". From a population/fan standpoint? Thats inarguable. From an importance standpoint it changes year to year, but most likely one of the SEC ones. If your just looking for an enjoyable game then you coudl definately argue for the RRS (for high scoring) or Army/Navy if you are a traditionalist.

It's definitely up there, but it's been one of our chief rivals since even before than. The problem with that is LSU will probably never have just one true rival, just a lot of really strong secondary rivalries.

We play Arkansas every year after Thanksgiving, but nobody really gives a crap about that series, which only started 16 years ago. In the 50s and 60s we had an intense rivalry with Ole Miss, but they are no longer the powerhouse they were. While they often make it interesting they rarely beat us, so I can't consider it that much of a rivalry. Though there is a healthy amount of dislike between the two schools. Then there's the Egg Bowl they have with Miss St. which occupies most of their hatred.

Then there's Florida, who we play every year and are very heated with.....Only problem is we're like 4th or 5th on their list of rivals behind FSU, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Auburn is also one of our main rivals and you could say that on the field they are our most competitive rival. This matchup always has huge division title implications and almost always comes down to the final second. Unfortunately, they have Alabama as their main rival.


Basically, every school's fans hate LSU fans, and LSU fans hate fans of every other schools, but don't hate one particularly more than any other. Therefore, LSU has several hated foes but no true rivals.

You have to break it down, even further.

Best Rivalry by Tradition: Ohio State vs. Michigan "The Rivalry"
Best Rivalry by Intensity: Georgia vs. Georgia Tech "Good Ole Fashioned Hate"
Best Rivalry by Neighboring States: Texas vs. Oklahoma "The Red River Shoot-out"
Best Rivalry by Armed Forces: Army vs. Navy

Penn St./Ohio St. will get more and more interesting as it grows, I believe Penn St. has only been in the Big 10 since 94? As long as Penn St. is on the rise, this will turn into a great rivalry. On a side note I was there in 2006 for the Mich/Ohio St. #1 vs. #2 game. It was intense, the excitement the stadium rumbling. My all-time favorite memory of Ohio St. Football. rushing the field to sing Carmen Ohio! Love College Football can't wait for this season.

Actually Michigan is more split up than that. A lot of people root for Michigan State. Yes, I've been to Michigan, most of my family lives up there. I'd have to say it's more like 2/3 Michigan 1/3 Michigan State, if not closer.

No, it's not.

The only people who like State are state grads (by and large). The area right around Lansing is sparty country and they have some fans around metro-detroit (mostly grads). Once you start to venture around the state it's pretty much all U of M.

They just appear more numerous because UM dropped their Journalism program awhile back. Most of the media are MSU grads (or Chips). I'd estimate it's about 80% Michigan fans in the state.
