Bill O'Brien to interview with Texans

It appears Penn State coach Bill O'Brien is considering a return to the NFL.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, O'Brien is one of the top candidates for the Houston Texans coaching job, and both sides have agreed to conduct an interview following Christmas. There is no date on when the agreed upon meeting will take place.

O'Brien took over at Penn State before the 2012 season and before the NCAA announced penalties against the school following the Jerry Sandusky scandal. He had spent the previous five seasons on the New England Patriots coaching staff.

Should O'Brien ultimately decide to leave Penn State and return to the NFL, he won't come cheap. Aside from the salary O'Brien would receive his current contract at Penn State includes a buyout of $6.5 million.

And while a buyout of that size would no doubt keep other colleges from sniffing around O'Brien, an NFL team wouldn't have nearly as much trouble paying it.

his agents kept renegotiating to lower his buyout...as I have read in the past week....so, great, Penn State may end up sucking with some run of the mill coach soon ?

Penn St is a better job than the Texans. He can stay there 30 years and be lauded as a hero when he brings them all the way back (and if he stays, he will).

Or, he can go to the Texans and get fired in three years like 75% of NFL coaches do.

College coaches also maintain authority in the program. Just look at what is rumored to be going on in Washington with some saying RGIII is above Shanahan. A lot of teams have something similar to that going on. If you have a great job like Penn State, with that authority, why give it up?

1st half is true....2nd half, not so much. McNair rides with his coaches to the point of fault and many want to believe it will be different this time but it won't.

Not in State College he's not, where they are counting the days until enough time passes to put his statues back up.

That has zero to do with BOB anyway and actually works to his advantage as he can be seen as a savior who revived things.

Also, some of you are nuts if you think the Houston Texas is a better job than Penn St. The only reason to make this move would be if he's dead set on being an NFL coach. Otherwise, this is a job you bypass until a better offer comes along that you can't refuse.

Penn State isn't that great of a job, think you are overselling it a bit. Don't think Houston is a good situation for him and he'd be better served to wait, but BOB will upgrade at some point. Most likely in the NFL, that seems to be the direction he's headed but there are a lot of jobs on the college level even that would represent an upgrade.

I don't really disagree. Sure, there are plenty of better jobs on both levels. If this was the Giants calling or something and not the Texans, that's a job you take. But the Texans? No. Penn St is a much more high profile job, with more earning potential as well. That's a program that can make you the king of a fiefdom if you stick it out and deliver.

The Texans are a quarterback and change away from being Super Bowl contenders. This is a far, far superior job than Penn State.

Laughable. Not even close, actually.

Earning potential, job stability/security, notoriety, everything is in favor of Penn St.

If he's dead set on an NFL job, sure, he should take it. But it's not a better job. The Houston Texans are a non entity expansion team with no history. Bottom third NFL job, have never been able to attract a big time coach, BOB would be an enormous score for a franchise at their level.
