Word is spreading they are working on a deal with him. McNair doesn't want a sexy pick...look at his past 2 choices and he stuck with them till they were run out by the fans. A big name would have wanted total control and it doesn't seem he wants that either. I don't think you win your division 2x in a row w/ little talent. Having the #1 Def guy in the league has to help with getting a coach. They are older, so they will need to hit on their picks and stop picking up Green & Reed FA...but that is why teams have scouting dept. Hopkins needs to step it up year 2 and their LB crew has to improve and stay healthy.

I was sort of hoping he'd stay on board, but this move seemed inevitable since he got there. Penn St is going to be terrible now, which is what was expected. They were lucky to pull in a quality coach like BOB.

Penn State is no longer an elite job. Any job in the NFL is better than a job at Penn State. Damaged goods.

BOB can drop back down to any college football team he wants to if this Texans gig doesn't work out. Or, he could go back to being an OC for any team in the NFL.

Being a good coach is its own job security.

Lots of these former NFL guys love the pros because they don't have to recruit...

They'd rather spend 24/7/365 doing actual coaching rather than worrying about having to keep a 17 year old kid's attention for 4 years of high school.

Penn State is a tier 3 or 4 college job. I hate to see BOB leave, the B1G needs all of the good coaches they can get. There is talk of Greg Schiano leaving Tampa Bay for Happy Valley if BOB does indeed leave, as he was a Paterno assistant and PSU is his dream job.

The probation will be over quicker than you think, and whatever coach chooses to stay there forever will be treated like a king, especially once they start winning again. Again, with the money, facilities, and history it is pretty laughable to call it a 3rd or 4th tier program based on one short probation which hasn't even buried them even close to the extent people thought it would. Let's not act like this is Iowa St or Wazzou or NC State or some shit, let's get a clue.

Schiano isn't the only guy who would potentially jump from the NFL to Penn St, Munchak is rumored to be interested as well. The list of schools NFL coaches would jump to is very short, and it doesn't include 4th tier randoms like Kansas or Kentucky.

While this may be true, Penn St is a better job than Tampa or Tennessee, too.

I'm not even saying Penn St is a top tier job. It clearly took a hit. But not as big a hit as you think and that program is going to be back. And its still a better job than these NFL bottom feeder jobs.

I don't agree with Michigan and USC. Great college jobs...not a job I'd keep over a pro job.

The pay scale is slanted so far in the NFL's direction college can't keep up outside of a select few. Only two pro coaches make less than 2M (Dennis Allen and Chud...two NFL guys)...Average is 4.6M. There are only six coaches in CFB that make more than that (Saban, Mack Brown, Stoops, Meyer...and Butch Jones/Bret Bielema, lol). There are only 25 programs that make more than the NFL's lowest coaching salary. Only 17 that make over 3M (which is kind of the entry level NFL Coaching salary for non-broke dick teams like Cleveland and Oakland).

I think that your opinion on how the tiers work is different than most. Think of it like the food pyramid, with the highly coveted jobs being smaller sections and then as it goes down they get larger. Iowa State, Wazzu or NC State wouldn't be 3rd tier schools.

First tier jobs are ones like Texas, Alabama, OSU, USC (It's a short list). Second tier is teams like Oklahoma, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Georgia, etc. 3rd tier is teams like Penn State, Auburn, Tennessee, etc.
