Boise State hypocritical in not wanting to play Idaho

Andy Staples compares BSU to the schools that fear playing them in that they won't play Idaho. They want to discontinue their rivalry and have a bunch of BS reasons for doing as much.

Boise cancelling this series isnt nearly the same thing as teams ducking them, and there is nothing hypocritical about it. You guys are missing the big difference here.

Teams duck Boise because they are afraid Boise will knock them off.

Boise doesnt want to play Idaho, because it does nothing for their resume. In fact, it hurts their resume, even if they win.

If, say, Oregon beats Boise, it helps their resume. Teams don't play Boise because they're scared, Boise isnt playing Idaho because there is nothing to gain.

Maybe if some of these pussy power teams would stop ducking Boise, they could keep Idaho on the schedule. But as it is, all playing Idaho does is lower Boise's stock.

Boise has to keep everything open for a potential big opponent because they don't get many chances to schedule one. I doubt they want to tell say an Ohio State or USC that they cannot schedule a game for their open week because they have a game scheduled with Idaho.

I'm not sure that's entirely true, a lot of the things being talked about in previous years (remember we're talking a few years back) was that big programs gained nothing from defeating Boise.

Obviously, that's not the case as much anymore. 3-4 years ago, though, before they truly established themselves as a top program that was one of the big holdups: what does a big program get from playing Boise? Again, not the case as much anymore, but that's why this is hypocritical.

I don't think that is exactly true

They are facing VT this year at Fedex [basically a road game] with no return date to Boise set in the future [that I know of]. Then they have Ole Miss on the road set up for 2011

There is a difference, but this isn't quite it. Teams playing Boise don't gain anything, either... Not so long as BSU has a smaller stadium, less television revenue, and plays in a mid-major as opposed to the BCS.

Still, it's a rival. Utah plays Utah State. (Though I honestly can't tell you if they play Weber State or not... But WVU plays Marshall, so there's that. :dontknow

WVU only played Marshall b/c the governor made both the AD's agree to it... now that Manchin is out as governor, the series will likely die... and it wasnt exactly a fair series, WVU only agreed to it b/c they got a 5-2 home/away advantage, as opposed to the traditional home and home (1-1)... WVU gains nothing by playing Marshall every year, as it is not a rivalry, so i can honestly say i hope the series does die out...

why pick idaho? if u want to replace a game with a top level team, why replace your rival?
well, is it really a rival if you destroy them every year? BSU playing idaho would be like ohio state playing ohio u every year. But the problem with that is BSU wasnt always a great team. now that they are a great team it does come across as hypocritical imo.

i wish more of the bigtime schools would go play at BSU. This would show the nation that beating OU a few years back was a fluke and that while BSU is a good team, they (and the likes of hawaii, and tcu) have no business in the title game. Not until they start playing in a conference with good teams, or give themselves 2 or 4 top teams for non conference games

Maynard, despite the fact that schools such as BSU, TCU, and Utah do not participate in BCS conferences, they have beat BCS-level competition. If BSU's win against OU was a fluke, then what about Utah's win over Bama? It wasn't exactly close.

I expect this sort of homer talk from someone from the SEC, which seems to always be strong from top to bottom, but it's not like the Big T1E1N is good all the way through... It's been known occasionally as Ohio State and the Little ten (sorta like SC and the Little nine), or OSU, PSU, and the rest...

I think someone mentioned it, but theyt have tough roud games scheduled the next few years. Not to mention a few big schools pulling out of deals when they realised the game would be tougher than anticipated. Same thing happened to Hawaii when June Jones had them peaking.

Again, Boise has nothing to gain playing Idaho, and need to keep that date flexible each year just in case one of the BCS teams grows a penis and decides to man up and play them.

Teams were straight up ducking Boise, Boise isnt ducking Idaho, they blow them out every year. If these BCS teams thought they could blow out Boise, they would play them.
