Axford hasn't blown a save since early April. He's still the closer.

K-rod will have the 8th inning. There's no way the Brewers can afford to pay him 17 million next year anyways. Kameron Loe has been the 8th inning guy for most of the year for the Brewers. Loe has seven losses so far this year. Hasn't been reliable at all.

Well, the only way it's a bad move for them is if they don't win this year and they somehow get roped into paying him lots of money either next year or over the next several years.

Either A) Milwaukee wasn't on his no-trade list or B) they were and he said screw it, i'll go there and do whatever they want

But having just moved over to Boras, would he sacrifice the $17 million for nothing? Not even an extension?

The issue with that is, the Mets have no real reason to just hand him away for literally nothing (like we believe they did with KRod). Sure, they get absolutely nothing besides his production if they keep him. But, there is no issue with how much he's owed.

Besides, there won't be as many teams scared off by Beltran (as there apparently was with KRod) because he's gone at the end of the year anyway.

Not saying they will get any legit prospects or anything, but I could see them getting a borderline major leaguer (AAAA kind of player) from the Giants, Indians, Mariners, etc.

I'll be the first to say I had no idea this was coming. It's very needed though. Can't see them giving up much for prospects, mostly because we don't have any to give up anyway. Can't hurt them financially so it's pretty much like getting a free player in the setup role as far as anyone can tell.

Don't sleep on the idea of F-Rod closing games for the Brewers. He's been pretty good this year, and Axford, despite a lack of blown saves lately, has been shaky at times.

I could easily see a mix and match situation at minimum.

Also, Doug Melvin was pretty tight lipped about it when asked. He could have just said "no, Axford is our closer. End of story.".

The clause is if he finishes the game, doesn't have to be a save opportunity, just has to get the last out of the game. Brewers better be praying they don't have to use him in that spot at all.

When they're in the heat of the game, I doubt the manager is gonna give much thought to how many more games K-Rod has left before the option kicks in.

It will be an interesting story to follow as far as whether the organization gets involved, if they don't reach a deal with K-Rod first.

If the Brewers end up paying K-Rod more then the 3.5 million buyout it's a bad trade. They don't need to pay for a closer when they have Axford making 500K, and performing better then K-Rod.

K-Rod's WHIP, ERA, and FIP are all higher then Axfords. They both have their shaky moments and allow more base runners then what you'd like; but Axford is performing better and cheaper. He's the teams closer.

What's interesting is K-rod didn't have to approve this trade. The Brewers aren't on his limited no-trade list. Hopefully he accepts his role and is happy to play for a contender, because he's losing money.
