Brewers acquire Francisco Rodriguez for PTBNL

MoneyMan and GoblinSlayer, do you guys know anything about Logan Schafer?

He went to my high school, I work with his brother, and he usually comes in during the offseason to workout. I think he is doing pretty well right now for the Brewers minor league team. Just wondering if either of you have heard of him. Apparently he was the Brewers minor league player of the year in 2009 but I know he got hurt last year.

He hits for good average, and can take a pitch or two, but there's no power at all. However since his defense is good enough to stick in center it's not that big of a deal. Keith Law actually just named him as one of the best prospects in the Brewer system.

If Gomez/Morgan or whoever we have out in center struggles next year I could see Schafer getting a call up at some point in 2012. Here's what the Brewer's beat writer had to say about Schafer this spring:

Schafer, the Brewers' 2009 minor league player of the year, probably would have been in the Top 10 had he not missed almost the entire 2010 season with injuries.

Nichols told me that Schafer is doing well now and could begin the season as the center fielder at Class AAA Nashville despite missing most of last season. And Nichols said Schafer is so advanced defensively that he could be "major-league ready" by the middle of the season if he stays healthy and performs as expected

I guess you should suck up to him this offseason so you can score me some free Brewer tickets next year. :smug:

You didn't ask for my opinion, but I've seen him play quite a bit for Huntsville. He's currently recovering from surgery on his right thumb, but he's been pretty productive in AA. Hits just over the .300 range with a OBP just under .400. He has very little power but has the speed to stretch singles into doubles. Straight line drive hitter that hits to all sides of the field. K/BB ratio hasn't been good in the past, but he's shown a lot better plate discipline this year. Also becoming a lot better base runner as he progresses. He has a great glove in the outfield which is easily his best attribute. With his speed, he also holds great reaction time and takes great angles. I don't see him being a big major league presence, but I could see him being a solid role player in the future. He has to stay healthy though. He's had a ton of injuries and a couple more may end his career.

I play FIFA with him from time to time and workout with him every now and then when he is home. He is a tiny guy but has grown a lot over the last 5 years so his power could get better if he added some strength and weight and stopped getting hurt. I'll see if I can get him on the roids for you guys.

which many fans looked toward Mat Gamel, which would be an amazing get for the Mets.

But the more we dig, we maybe looking at someone like Mike McLendon, Danny Herrera who fits that description.

Guys like RP Manny Parra and RP Mike DeFelice also fit that but are on the DL.

Others are guys like RP Fiers, and this OF Khris Davis.

Final number is Mets sent just over $6 million to Milwaukee. They cover nearly half of K-Rod's remaining 2011 salary plus the $3.5 million buyout for next year...assuming he does not reach the 55 finished games mark.

Well apparently the Brewers were one of the ten teams on K-rod's no trade list; but his agent never gave the list to the Mets. Hopefully he's just glad to play for a pretender.

Anyways, it's a win-win deal for all sides (except the Mets) The Brewers can use K-Rod however they want, without worrying about the option, K-Rod will get more opp. to close now, and now he can become a FA at the end of the season and hopefully land a multi-year deal with some team.

Mets win for the fact they don't have to pay him $17 million next year, which is what would've happened if they keep him.

With the Brewers it makes sense because by then, he wants to reach free agency and he risks taking a hit in value if the Brewers don't use him as a closer. So now, he gets rid of the vesting option and he can close as many games as necessary and come the off-season, he can sign a new 3 year deal for however much.

Meanwhile, the Mets get out from his deal....the Brewers get his services for at least 2.5 months (perhaps another if they go deep in the playoffs) and in the off-season, he signs a fresh long-term contract.

That's the reason why it wouldn't vest...because he wouldn't get the opportunity to close...you change the deal so it won't matter and he'll hit the open market, and he can prove he's a damn good closer. TRUST me, he wouldn't have done this as a Met...so we needed to trade him ASAP and have that money available to us.
