IMO Penn State lost too much and doesn't have enough depth behind it... Ohio State at least has more depth to count on with all we lost.
It says a lot about the Big Ten when two teams that lost a ton from the year before are the top 2 in the conference.
I think Penn State will be just fine this year.
QB- Daryl Clark is the class of the Big Ten. He was great all year until he suffered that concussion against the Buckeyes. Kevin Newsome was a five-star prospect this year and is the future of the Nits.
RB- One of our biggest strengths. Evan Royster is the best runningback (most accomplished) coming back in the Big Ten and should have another great season. Stephon Green is lighting quick and will spell Royster at times. Brandon Beachum looked decent in limited time last year.
WR/TE- Problem spot, but not as much as people think. Last year's group with D-Will, Norwood, and Butler were small. This year's group is
huge. Brett Brackett (6'6") is a former quarterback who looked good in some games last year. I expect a big year from him. Derek Moye (6'5") and Graham Zug (6'2") will be the other main targets at wideout. At tight end, Andrew Quarless (6'5") is a great talent, but is usually in Paterno's doghouse for causing trouble. Jon Ditto (6'3") can line up at either TE or WR. Mickey Shuler (6'4") was the starting tight end last year.
OL- It'll say that the O-line lost five starters last year, but really, we only lost three. One of the kids filling an open spot has been ready to play for 2 years now but was benched because they played the underclassmen. Plus the O-line has go against one, if not the best, defensive line in the Big Ten all the time in practice. They'll be ready.
DL- Another question mark, but not a big one. Sure we lost Aaron Maybin and Maurice Evans, but Jack Crawford is turning heads in spring practice. He's got a similar body as Maybin and I expect about the same production. Defensive tackle is stacked. Jared Odrick, Ollie Obgu, and Abe Koroma all started or played tons last year. Devon Still, I think, broke his leg last year, but has a lot of talent.
LB- We're called Linebacker U for a reason. Navarro Bowman is an animal on the outside, and Sean Lee is back from his ACL injury. Jerome Hayes is back from his ACL tear as well, and then there's four 4-star prospects that are either redshirt freshmen or sophomores that are looking for playing time.
DB- The biggest concern I see with this team. The whole starting secondary is gone, and the only experienced one coming back is AJ Wallace. Wallace is very quick but suspect in coverage, and I think sophomore D'Anton Lynn will man the other corner spot. Lynn's a four-star (I believe) from Texas who came to Happy Valley. Safeties are really talented but no experience. Drew Astorino played a little bit last year and is more athletic than last year's starter Anthony Scirrotto. Gerald Hodges is a freshman coming in who coaches are really high on. He has the body of one of the linebackers (6'3", 210) and hits like one too. Knowledge Timmons, a senior, is the only other player I could see making a difference at safety.
Special Teams- Kevin Kelly graduated, but we have Texas kicker Anthony Fera coming in. Jeremy Boone returns at punter and then Wallace and Green man the return spots.
Penn State has players coming back, and it's in Happy Valley, so it's definitely going to be close. Probably will be primetime, so you know the White-Out's coming. I'm going to try to get tickets. You guys got me excited for this game already.
