Well, they review the scoring plays automatically now, but I get what you're saying. It's like committing pass interference when you know the receiver has you beat. In this case, taking a potential 50 yard gain and only making it 15 in a close game, it's definitely worth it.
Given the widespread attention to head injuries and former players suing the league I have to believe that Goodell is only trying to as he likes to say, "protecting the shield". It started when players were constantly getting in trouble with the law and has progressed to making rule changes to help in litigation. I have to believe that any commissioner of the NFL would have had to done the same.
Honestly....that's an offset, replay the down, according to the new rule. Both players lead with crown, Pool just lost the battle.

No, a smart one would have just paid those old cocksuckers off and started to ban equipment that is deemed not up to par. And Goodell and the owners don't give a shit about player safety if they did they wouldn't keep trying to add 2 more regular season games.
There is no way the league could pay all of these retired players (a growing list) off and this is the point. Goodell doesn't care anything about player safety, but he does care about the vitality of the league and all of his decisions to change the game center around litigation.

CTE....head injuries..........long term effects.......this is what the litigation is about and all of these rule changes have centered around it.
This latest rule change isn't about protecting defensive players, but instead protecting runningbacks from using their head (concussions, CTE, etc) as a weapon.

NFL ratings have never been higher. Opening night, the Superbowl, the NFL combine, the draft, etc are all breaking records. I am not sure all of these rule changes are really hurting the league. People just adjust and continue to enjoy it.

Hes a big fat hypocrite. Its about scoring points and avoiding litigation. Nothing more.
NFL has NUMEROUS opportunities to fix the retired players situation. They balked and penny pinched everytime. The lawsuits were essentially a last resort. This does go back to Tagliabue but Tags IMO would have dealt with this by the last CBA.
Every chance Goodell has had to actually address the on field issues hes screwed up. The referee debacle is just the highlight of a guy outsmarting himself. He has no vision for this league and Tags only picked up because of his business savvy not his Football side its starting to wreak.
As for ratings sports are weird. You will alienate your core fanbase and attract many "new" fans with these kinds of changes. But you are gambling that the novelty of Fantasy Football is going to keep the NFL afloat and that charm and angle will never wear off. Because at the core the game has changed , the fundamentals have changed, and the fans will change. This cycle of change is not a beneficial one and is not good long term.
I think someone posted an NHL article about how its commish avoided the issue by basically saying F-U its a violent sport. I dont follow the NHL year to year but I would think that sport would be on a slow death if it decided to eliminate the violence to the extremes NFL is trying. Maybe a hockey head can school me on the innards.
