Sequence of events:
1) Greinke accidentally hits Quentin with a pitch 4 years ago.
2) Quentin feels wrong by this innocent action and remains angry for four years.
3) Quentin is hit by countless other pitches
4) Greinke accidentally hits Quentin again last night
5) Quentin begins to charge the mount
6) Greinke takes off glove and says something (seems reasonable considering someone is charging him already)
7) Greinke's collarbone goes splat.

I think the blame for this is onesided. Quentin is a twat, with anger issues.

I hope the Dodgers trade for Kyle Farnsworth for the sole purpose of using him to throw at Carlos Quentin. That would be awesome.

I have a new found respect for Matt Kemp, must be a good dude.

Not saying Quentin is blameless, but if Greinke keeps his mouth shut, his collar bone is still intact. I don't see how anyone can see that and not believe Greinke isn't pleased with himself.

So alternatively, what should be a player's response? The league doesn't do anything about pitchers intentionally plunking hitters. Once in a while they get ejected. They certainly aren't suspended, unless they admit they did it intentionally. And even then, with starting pitchers, you end up pushing their start back a day or two.

If MLB institutes a policy about this, they're going to have to address both sides. You can't have hitters charging the mound, but you can't have pitchers intentionally throwing at batters as well. If there's a significant suspension/fine for one, there should be for the other as well.

Quentin should have just jogged to first. If he had done this, nothing would have happened. Not only is Quentin "glaring" and "upset", he is also walking towards the mound with the bat in his hand instead of going to first. You seem to have 'glossed over' this minor detail.

You make it sound as if Quentin had no other choice in the matter, like "What else could he have done?" Amazing.

I think it's a 50/50 shot here. They have the history with each other, yes. Quentin is a hot head, yes. However, we have seen time where players do walk towards the mound and then end up going to first base. It's not uncommon. It's easy to say if Quentin goes to 1st base, Grienke doesn't say anything, and all blame goes to Quentin. Where is the blame on Grienke, though?

My issue here is Quentin knows what Grienke said. It set him off. If Grienke says "Oh shit, my bad", Quentin's chances of rushing the mound are lower. Grienke says something and is smirking. Come on now.

Count me in the camp that thinks Quentin wasn't going to charge until Greinke gave that smirk and a (presumably) smart-assed comment. He was doing the classic staredown, obviously pissed, but didn't seem all that aggressive at first.

Quentin should have kept his cool, but there is no denying that Greinke is a smarmy douche, and if you are already angry it's gonna be pretty easy to snap when you see this face:
