After hearing the same words five more times, I shut off my phone and threw it in the back seat of my car. Then I did uncharacteristic thing of myself...I cried. Never once did I cry after a game. Hell, I never cried after Evan, my own little brother, was shot by Rodney. But this hit me like no other, and I didn't know what to do.

The tears finally dried out as I sat there in my car for about two more hours with no music or no sound...just wondering where she went. I finally turned it on and drove off back to the apartment, hoping and praying that she would be there waiting.

But when my headlights revealed the dark parking lot, I was disappointed to see that Melyssa's car was long gone. My guess is that she drove off to Troy's apartment and wouldn't come back or speak to me until further notice. I contemplated driving over to his apartment to get this solved, but figured that tonight wouldn't be the best time. Let her settle down and maybe it would be easier to get her back.

I opened the front door and felt an emptiness inside. Walking into the bedroom, I didn't see anything of mine harmed, but I did notice that there were empty drawers once filled with her clothes. The more missing stuff I saw of her's, the more I kicked myself and the more it hit me. This might not be just a little break; she's possibly not coming back.

"So you're telling me that his friend's girl was Rebecca?" Troy asked a still crying Melyssa.

"Yeah," she replied, sniffling. "And she said that Ethan was already going to be a father...until they settled on an abortion."

"I knew that fucker would never change," he muttered. "So what are you going to do then Mel? Hang out around here and never face him again?"

"I wish," she said. "But I know I'll have to talk to him sooner or later. If he was hiding this, I don't even want to think about what else he might have been keeping from me."

"Yeah, I know what you mean."

"But right now I want to stay away from him as much as possible. Let tension ease before going back to see where we stand, you know?"

"Well you're more than welcome to stay here until that day comes. Just don't be bringing guys over every night."

"We'll see, we'll see."

Before attempting to go to sleep, I reached into my back pocket and pulled out Melyssa's engagement ring. I placed it right in front of the picture of me and her sitting on my night stand - the only picture of her left in the house. Then before turning off the lights, I kissed the ring and whispered one line as I drifted off into sleep.

"I don't care if I have to give up everything...this ring will be on your finger again. We'll be back together...we'll be back..."

Losing Focus

Syracuse Orange (2-2) at West Virginia Mountaineers (2-1)

After everything that went down with Melyssa, I basically went into hiding for the rest of the week. Yeah, I still went to practices and such, but after my classes and other required activities, I went right back to my apartment. The whole situation left me with no motivation to go down to Morgantown and play our biggest rival; West Virginia. Plus, the memories of last year's game haunted me while I slept all week and the moments following it just made it worse.

Right away, West Virginia proved to be the better team. Noel Devine started to carve our defense up and with 15 carries in the first half, he already was over 125 yards. Down 24-7, we needed a spark or some sort of speech to motivate us and as a captain, it was my job to be the emotional leader and deliver that speech. However, it never came; I just couldn't focus.

The stats say I did well, but when you look at the tape, you'll see countless drops and multiple times where I've gotten blown up while attempting to block.

When the horn sounded, Morgantown celebrated another win over their rival and I walked off the field without a care. I needed something...someone to get me out of this slump.

Getting Back on Track

Connecticut Huskies (4-0) at Syracuse Orange (2-3)

My mind again was elsewhere as Melyssa continued to ignore my phone calls throughout the week. I didn't show any motivation throughout practice, slacked off during lifting and surprisingly wasn't questioned by my coaches; maybe because I was really the only offensive threat we had.

We came into this game as the underdogs, as Connecticut was off to a 4-0 start and on the brisk of breaking into the Top 25. However, Ryan came out on target and we marched down the field for a touchdown on our opening drive.

Connecticut struck back with a score of their own, but then we did a very uncharacteristic thing out of our new offense; we started running the ball. Doug got carry after carry and after 20 of them, he racked up 176 yards and three touchdowns. I was a factor in the offense, getting multiple first downs, but never was a threat inside the red zone.

Although I still felt empty inside, it was nice to upset a solid squad and get back on track.
