As for a career, I'm currently majoring in Journalism and want to have my own column someday. This creative writing stuff is something I do on the side.

Head of the Game

The next few weeks consisted of saying goodbye to Melyssa, spending countless hours with Britt and going back to the hospital for concussion tests. Just a few days before we were scheduled to leave for El Paso, I had to go to the hospital one last time to see where I stood for the Sun Bowl.

"Well Mr. Woy," the doctor started. "After all your tests, we deemed you safe to play next week against Oregon State."

"Thanks Doc," I replied, never doubting for a second that I would be cleared.

"No problem. Now play hard out there; it's been quite some time since we last won a bowl game."

...

"Are you sure you have to leave, babe?" Britt asked sarcastically, while laying in my bed with just a t-shirt on.

"What kind of question is that?" I laughed. "Of course I have to go, I don't want to miss the plane."

"One more time?" she practically begged, but it was to no avail.

"Listen," I started off. "It'll only be a week. I'm sure you can wait that long for me to get back. In the meantime, just go have fun and enjoy yourself these next few days. I'll give you the spare key if you want to crash here."

"Alright I'll make sure to sleep with a different guy in your bed every night until you get back," she stated. I gave a look of disbelief and started to carry my bags out to the door, when she jumped out of bed to stop me. "It was a joke!"

"I know," I replied, smiling. "I just wanted to see your reaction." And with one last kiss, I made my way out the door and on my way to the airport.

...

"Finally out of the snow," I thought as the plane touched down on the runway. The sun was shining down on the Lone Star State and I hoped for the same type of weather for New Year's Eve.

After arriving at the hotel, I dozed off for a few hours before waking up to Ryan's voice telling me to get ready. Apparently I didn't pay attention in a meeting and forgot we had a team dinner with the Sun Bowl representatives.

But the Sun Bowl representatives weren't the only people joining us...

"What the fuck are they doing here?" Doug spit out as Oregon State's players walked through the door.

"Calm down Doug," Ryan said, holding him back from getting up. "Don't even associate with them; we'll kick their asses on the field."

"As long as we get first chance at the buffet, I won't have a problem with them," I jokingly replied. "Besides, I'm more worried about the shit we're supposed to get for making it to this game. I better be seeing something like a new iPod in these gift packages."

"Definitely," Ryan said, laughing. "I'll be making an eBay account if this shit is wack."

After everyone sat down, the head of the Sun Bowl committee made a quick opening speech and then had some of his co-workers pass out the gift packages. Surely enough, the gifts were not appealing whatsoever...seriously, a fleece pullover?

"Well we have motivation for next year boys," I stated, as I threw the pullover back in the box. "We are going to a bowl game that doesn't give shit for gifts."

The entire table - including some of the coaching staff - busted out laughing as some of the bowl representatives shook their head in disgust. Hey, maybe if you have thrown a new laptop in there, then I wouldn't be bashing your gifts.

Dinner went by pretty smoothly and the food was really good; I guess the reps got the meal right at least. However, we ran into a little trouble as we walked out of the room.

"Watch where you're going," a smaller Oregon State player shot at me as I accidentally ran into him.

"Maybe if you'd grow a little I wouldn't have ran into you," I mumbled under my breath.

"What was that?" Jacquizz Rodgers angrily asked. I didn't know whether to take him seriously or not, mainly because I couldn't see eye-to-eye with the Beavers' runningback.

"You heard me," I stated. "Or did my words float right over your head? I'm sure that happens quite often in your life."

He stared up at me for a few seconds, then shook his head and replied, "we'll see what happens Friday."

Another great writeup, I hope that Jacquizz is a cornerback, will be a great matchup if so.

He's actually their starting runningback, but it would affect the game story more if he was the cornerback.

Next update probably won't be till Tuesday, BTW.

Sun Setting

Syracuse Orange (7-5) at #19 Oregon State Beavers (9-3)

"We made it fellas," I stated while standing in the middle of the group huddle. "Look at the guy beside you and thank him; without that teammate, you wouldn't have made it here. We didn't make it as individuals...no, we made it as a team."

Then I looked out into the crowd and saw a sea of orange and blue. "See them right there," I asked while pointing out to them. "Do you really think they traveled the whole way from snowy Syracuse to beautiful El Paso just to see us lose? Hell fucking no! The mission hasn't been accomplished yet gentlemen. We made it here, but now it's time to win! They think it's just going to be a cakewalk...well they thought wrong. This is our time!"

"You heard him boys," Ryan shouted. "No one's giving us a chance. Let's prove them wrong!"

"That's right Ryan," I replied. "Now...who we are!?"

"SU!"

"And what we do!?"

"Stomp on you!"

"I said, what we do!?"

"Stomp on you!"

"Break it down now! One, two, three..."

"SU will rock you!"

"Call it in the air Syracuse," the referee said as he released the coin from his hand.

"Tails."

"It's tails. Would you like to..."

"We want the ball," I stated, staring Jacquizz right in the eyes.

"Okay. Oregon State, which end do you want to defend?"

Jacquizz pointed to the south end zone and the referee ordered for us to shake hands. Ryan shook both of the Rodgers' hands, but I simply walked up and smiled.

"Get ready to see a show, boys."

The opening kickoff was brought out to the 33-yard line by Levar and we set up shop from there. Ryan called a pass play in the huddle that had me running a five-yard hook. It was one of our most run plays this season and it usually set up a stop-and-go later in the game.

"Down!" Ryan barked out the cadence from the shotgun formation. "Set, one!"

I took a stride and a half down field then turned for the ball. Ryan fired it in my direction and as soon as it hit my hands, I ducked and avoided the cornerback's tackle attempt.

"Woy catches the pass from Nassib and avoids the first tackler..."

Turning upfield, I lined up the strong safety closing and threw a juke move to the inside of the field. However, the outside linebacker was there and I added a spin move that would make Barry Sanders proud.

"...side-steps the second tackler and wow! What a spin move! We might have something here..."

With nothing but green grass ahead of me, I sprinted down the field and high-stepped the final 10 yards to score a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

"...and there's no one that's going to catch him! Touchdown Syracuse on an electrifying play by the sophomore receiver Ethan Woy!"

Hey, I told you that I was going to put on a show.

However, we missed the extra point and didn't hold the lead for long. Oregon State answered right back with a touchdown of their own and after an interception, Jacquizz powered his way into the end zone to make it 14-6.

We got the ball back in the second quarter and I made it my goal to carry the team to the end zone again. A 13-yard dig route started the drive and it was followed by a 14-yard corner route that ended up being a very historical moment.

"And with that last catch, Woy has hit the century mark for catches in a season. What an incredible year for the All-American sophomore!"

I wasn't done though as I caught a slant and took it down field for 13 yards and followed that up with a 15-yard post. Four plays, four catches by me and suddenly we had all the momentum. Then surprising the defense, Doug took a hand-off and rumbled down the field for a 31 yard touchdown. However, the two-point attempt was missed and we were still down.

Oregon State added another touchdown and a field goal and although my 62-yard receiving touchdown in the fourth quarter brought us closer and put me over 200 receiving yards, it wasn't enough as we ended our season with a loss. I walked over to shake hands with their team after I was awarded with the Sun Bowl MVP trophy, but Jacquizz ignored my friendly gesture and shook my other teammates' hands instead.

Nightmare Scare

A day after losing, we had all our stuff packed and were on a flight back to snowy Syracuse. I sat by myself in the back with my Sun Bowl MVP trophy by my side, collecting my thoughts from the game. I was ecstatic with my play, but disappointed in my teammate and hated to send the senior class off with a loss. However, we were returning most of our starters and a talk with Coach Marrone about a possible Big East title run made me anxious for next year already.

A small crowd gathered inside the airport to congratulate us on a good season, which made me chuckle considering we went 7-6. But the Syracuse faithful haven't had much to cheer about lately regarding their football program, which made me even more anxious about giving them a special year to remember in 2011.

Around eleven at night, I finally made it back into my apartment; which was exactly how I left it, minus Britt. Since I slept on the plane for a while, I wasn't very tired so I grabbed a beer out of the fridge and turned on the TV to the local news.

"And to recap our main story for the night, a local man died in a three car crash earlier today."

I turned the volume up a little louder and when the victim's picture came up on the screen, I was completely shocked and dropped my beer, having it spill all over the carpet.

"What...the...hell," I said out loud. "How did he get out?"

"Rodney Morris died after striking a guard-rail and spinning back into oncoming traffic," he continued. "Two other cars were collected in the crash, but the drivers were checked out of the hospital with just no injuries; just a few scratches."

By this point, I was completely confused and a little pissed. How'd the jail let him get out? What was he going to do since he got out? And how the hell was I going to get this beer stain out of my new carpet? The pictures of the accident faded away and the anchor's face came back on screen.

"Funeral services will be held on Tuesday for family and friends," he stated. Then he started to lead into the next story and I shut the TV off, suddenly feeling tired and a little sick to my stomach.

...

"Strike three bitch."

*BANG BANG BANG*

...

And hours later, I was awake, drenched in sweat. I didn't understand; Rodney's dead, why was I worrying? He can't do anything to me, Melyssa, Britt...anyone right now. I shook my head, popped a few sleeping pills and drifted back into sleep.

...

I awoke to something much more pleasant, as Britt was laying on top of me. "Good morning babe," she said with a smile.

I returned her smile with one of my own, then gave her a kiss on the lips. "Did you miss me that much?"

"Yes," she replied. "I did miss something else though..."

"Can we wait just a little bit?" I asked. "I mean, I just woke up."

"Yeah I guess," she answered. Then she started biting her lip nervously and then cleared her throat. "But before we do anything, I have to tell you something..."

The Right and Wrong Assumption

The tension in the room was mounting between Britt and I. The 'I have to tell you something' line never has brought good news in my life and I was expecting the worst.

"Yes?" I said, trying to get her to spit out the message already.

"I'm leaving in a few days," she answered, completely shocking me. I expected something like 'I'm pregnant,' or 'I found out about Melyssa,' but this was better news for sure. Nonetheless, it still wasn't pleasant news.

"Why? Where to?" I asked with concern, because I still wasn't thrilled with what she said. Did she mean she was leaving campus and transferring somewhere else? Was she just leaving me in general?

"I have to go out of town," she depressingly answered. "Funeral."

I breathed a sigh of relief inside, because it didn't affect our standing at all, but I still felt bad for her. "I'm sorry," I replied while wiping a tear from her eye. "I couldn't imagine what you're going through right now."

"I'll be alright," she sniffled. "I should have expected it when he said he had some business to take care of. Those roads were terrible."

I stopped for a second, then shook my assumption off. "Nah, it couldn't be him," I mumbled.

"Anyways, let's lighten up the mood a little bit," she suggested. "Let's see what's on TV."

"Alright," I answered, plopping on the couch right beside her. I dug under the couch cushion for the remote and turned it on. Flipping through channels, I passed the local news station which made me do a double-take.

"Hang on babe," she said, stopping my channel-surfing. "Could you change it back there for a second?"

"Yeah," I answered, shrugging my shoulders. They were recapping Rodney's car accident and Britt's eyes were glued to the TV. Suspicion continued to run through my mind, but again I shook it off because I didn't want to assume that there was a connection.

Still I felt the need to ask her if anything was up, because the more they talked about Rodney's death and the more she was focusing on the story, the more I wondered what was going on. "Anything special about this?"

"Yeah," she said, sounding irritated. "My cousin died in a car accident, remember?"

"What...the...hell? How did he get out?"

"It was more like what your cousin did," I replied. "Do you realize what he put me through my freshman year!?"

Balled up on the couch, she was shaking by now and slowly shook her head no.

"He tried killing me," I said. The news made her jaw drop but I shook my head because I just couldn't trust anything she did or said now. "You probably knew that though, didn't you?"

"No I didn't," she whimpered.

"And you probably didn't know about the 'business' right?" I asked sarcastically. "Shut the fuck up, hoe."

"Ethan..." she tried consoling me. "What's wrong with you?"

"Did you not hear what I just told you!?" I shouted at the top of my lungs, probably awakening half of Syracuse. "Your cousin tried to kill me! Do I have to fucking spell it out for you!? D...o..."

"I got it," she replied softly. "But what does that have to do with what we have?"

"No bitch, you don't have it. I can't even bare to hear that name any more. Whenever I hear the name Rodney Morris, it instantly changes my mood. You have no fucking clue the type of hell he put me through...and seeing you now - knowing that you're related to him - immediately makes me think of the dark past. Just pack up and leave, please."

She sat there for a moment then slowly got up from the couch. Trying to hug me and bring some joy back in the household, I pushed her off and simply pointed to the door.

"You'll be sorry Ethan," she promised. "It didn't have to end like this."

"Get to stepping, bitch. Oh, and spit in your cousin's coffin for me, okay?"

The tears started overflowing after the last comment and as soon as she got her entire body out the door, I slammed it as hard as I could. From there, I angrily stomped my way back into my bedroom, and turned on my phone.

I scrolled down to the B's and found her number, erasing it so that there would be no Britt Morris in my cellular contacts...and in my life.
