I can only speak for people that I know in Philly, but at this point there is so much anger towards the current management, many refuse to go.

In fairness too, it's never fun to watch a crummy team live. Especially if the tickets aren't free.

I hesitate to get into a fanbase argument, but I don't think that either is hopeless. The Phillies are a bad team, and from why would anyone ever want to go to a fucking baseball game in Atlanta in the dead of summer?

I think we can conclude that there are a variety of factors that contribute to attendance figures for live sporting events, and not all of them can be explained with "bad sports town" or "good sports town" ...

While it may not be the case here, I believe there are some fanbases that can, on the whole, be considered better.

Tampa has been winning pretty consistently this decade and still finds itself at the lower end of the attendance spectrum. You see the same thing in Miami across all their sports.

I don't think region is the only determining factor though. For example, the Warriors have had one of the best NBA crowds for awhile now, and yet just across the street the A's never seem to have a sold out game.

I think it's more about individual teams in this day and age, rather than regional groupings. With the ability to see every minute of every game across all the major pro sports, you're starting to see a lot more people move away from regional loyalty as the sole reason for supporting a team.

I was at the game on Monday for dollar dog night. Had standing room only tickets and moved down in the 5th to left field, about where Uggla's grand slam landed. Was empty but I guess in Philly's defense it was a cold and windy night at the ballpark.

Dollar Dog is infamously College Night. 1.) Tailgaiting in the cold sucks. 2.) Season holders tend not to go with the violence and crap over the past few years.

More on comment #2, did season-ticket holders bail completely, or do they just not go to the College Night/Dollar Dog nights? I guess the next question is whether or not the Phillies did some sort of contract where you lock your seats in for a certain number of years?

Mostly, it's probably the weather for the northeast teams right now.

Per ESPN's chart....After barely a month into this season, only San Francisco is averaging a sell out. St. Louis is not far behind them and then there's Boston. After that, it's a further drop off for the rest of the 27 other teams. Cleveland is at the bottom, worse than either Florida team by a long shot.

Those are almost guaranteed to be the top 3 teams in terms of home attendance come September, too.

The atmosphere at A&T is unreal. Indescribable really. Been there twice, second of which was last August when they were 15 games under. Still a packed house, and everybody is wearing team gear head to toe. They are so into every pitch too. Most places the crowd is there to drink and shoot the breeze between pitches (if not during).

No idea how they did it, but they got a special thing down by the bay.

And I'll I'm hearing is excuse making. I thought Philly was as #diehardsportstown that sold out every game rain or shine, win or lose, no matter WHAT, bro. Or am I to believe they are just like every other city, in that they will turn out if the conditions are amenable and stay home otherwise.

Wait no, that can't be right, because again, fans in Philly are different. Special. They just care more than fans in than those #badsportstowns ... amirite?
