He isn't worth a pick becuase nobody wants his contract. Same deal with Larry Foote. I don't know anything about his deal, but I'm guessing it either has multiple years or an overbloated salary...or something with incentives. 'Tis the way of the NFL.
7th round picks have no cap hit if they don't make the team. Likewise, they can also be put on the practice squad and saved. Either way, if they are on the final roster its for the rookie minimum and if they're cut they are gone. No bonus, no prorated signing bonus. If they're injured and can't be cut, they make the rookie minimum. Ellis blows out his knee 2 days into mini-camp...he still gets paid until he's healthy.
Finanically, he's a much bigger risk than a 7th rounder. If a team wants to bring him in, they want it to be for a lower risk (IE, chepaer).
Thus, he isn't worth a 7th round pick. It's about more than talent.

You never know they might be beasts.
It will be up to Victor Butler and Brandon Williams to step up. They're both pretty good pass rushers, though, so I think they can do it.
JJ could have held him hostage and waited until a team suffered an injury at DE or 3-4 OLB, but out of gratitude for Ellis' years of service, and wanting to avoid more drama, cut bait early.

Spencer and Ware should be a nice young combo. Through in Bradie James and you have a pretty good starting LB core. NOt as good as Seattle's, but there's is hard to beat.

If there's any owner that does, it's JJ.
He did the same thing when he gave him an extension because he didn't want to hit the field two years ago because he was concerned about "reinjuring" his Achilles'.
He signed that extension and then went out and had a Pro Bowl season.
