You're missing my point, yes better health care could do it, but Goodell and the rest of the NFL see a cheaper more effective way then giving every single player free Health Care for life is to clean up the game, call more penalties and general protect the players.

The NFL would be bankrupt in 10 years if they tried to cover the injuries of their ex-players. Thus, the best long term option for the NFL to attempt to curtail the number of older players NEEDING extra medical care is to turn the game away from it's smash mouth past.

I've met Ditka quite a few times and he's always been incredibly friendly. So I will disagree with you there a bit.

Overrated coach? Depends where he is rated at but he was at least a good/very good NFL coach. He wasn't one of the GOAT's but he wasn't as average or bad as many of the younger generation make him seem to be.

I've seen him at his Steak House on Ontario but never met him or spoke with him there.

The talent level on defense yes but regardless of that his quarterbacks sucked and the Bears FO during those years was a fucking mess. Sure Ditka could have maybe done a little bit more with what he had but he took a team in shambles to a Super Bowl win in three seasons which is pretty impressive especially in the NFC at the time. He also made two conference championship games.

In context he might be. He's the only coach in Chicago not named Halas that has had any real sustained success. I mean Lovie Smith right now might be the 3rd best coach in Bears history. The Chicago fans that call him one of the greatest ever are wrong but he was a good or very good caoch during one of the periods of the most sustained success for the franchise so it would make sense that many fans would look at him very highly.

At times it has become almost en vogue for people to not like Ditka in Chicago as he in many ways was given a god-like status for so long. Now in some ways I think the pendulum has gone to far back the other way now and people are not liking the guy just to do so without really putting his coaching career in context.

I'm no fan of these NFL players that are brain dead, but to a degree I get what Steeljake is saying. It's obnoxious seeing Harrison get fined every week for some borderline shit. I get why they are trying to do it, but it still aggravates me that they will fine more for something that happens in the flow of the game than they will actual fighting. It's not money out of my pocket, but it does effect how one of the best players on the defense of my favorite team plays.

And to Hass, do you think that perhaps part of the reason at least the Steelers don't look nearly as good on defense this year is this constant fear of flags or fines? I think it at least has a role to play considering this team looks NOTHING like it did on defense at the start of the season.

Mainly because I think he was really a driving force behind it. I think that was the guy he wanted, at any cost. Even still as the GM you have to step in and act as a check and balance to Ditka.
