Disallowed goal at end of Hawks-Red Wings game

Not trying to exaggerate, but considering the timing, what was at stake, the egregiousness of the call itself (offsetting?), and how the game had been called up to that point...the disallowed goal in the waning moments of regulation has to be one of the worst calls in professional sports history. It was almost incomprehensible.

Its hard for me to come up with other instances like that in sport. The only thing that I could come up with is the USA-USSR Gold Medal game in 1972. The Packers-Seahawks hail mary was a terrible call that directly changed the outcome at the end of the game...but that was just a regular season game. The George Brett pine tar HR that was incorrectly/egregiously disallowed changed the outcome at the end of the game...but that was also just a regular season game (although a big game against the Yanks) and was also overturned. The Kings-Lakers playoff series in 2002 was terrible, but the worst calls came in Game 6 (not Game 7).

The only scenario I can come up with is if in the Niners-Ravens Super Bowl the Ravens DB mugged Crabtree, Crabtree still caught the pass for the winning TD, and the refs called offensive pass interference.

I was quite livid when I saw it live, but listening to Sharp talk after the game he said the whistle came before the shot. My only issue with it is why even blow the whistle? It had nothing to do with the play, and should have just been let go. I didnt have a problem with the hit or with Saad's reaction.

Yeah, they had to disallow the goal because of the whistle, but I guess my main issue is I don't know how Saad could have been called for a penalty.

At one point earlier in the game a RedWings player actually had a Hawks player by the throat during a scrum after a play.

Choking a player: Ok.

Slight rabbit punch after being slammed into opposing bench then onto the ice: Not Ok.

NHL officials are just awful. It's a very tough sport to officiate but it still doesn't explain some of the weak/irrelevant penalties called during the most important times of a game.

I'm still upset about the Brent Burns penalty for basically boxing out Robyn Regehr who ended up falling to the ground. Regehr is 6'3" 240, Burns established position in front of the crease by making some contact with Regehr who ended up falling and got called for it which led to the Kings first goal.

I also like the implication that Saad should have done nothing and curled up into the fetal position. Notice that the ref never stepped in at any point...he remained a safe distance away and watched Saad get hit into the Detroit bench, watched Quincey actually body slam Saad to the ice, watched Quincy remain on top of Saad, and actually watched Abdelkaner jump onto the ice and nearly cut Saad's neck with his skate.

Confirms my opinion the hockey forum on this site is the worst sports forum. Completely ignorant people.

Yes other situations could also be constituted as roughing and wasn't called, but that's sports. How is that any difference from holding in the NFL when it happens all the time, but is called only some of the time. Refs pick their spots with subjective penalties, it is what it is. He just happened to pick a spot right before a goal, terrible luck.

I don't buy into the controversy behind the disallowed goal at all though. Once the penalty was decided, everything that followed was by the rulebook. Penalty was decided, player touched the puck, whistle blows. If that pass to Hjalmarsson misses or if he simply doesn't score, I don't think anyone is criticizing the call to go 4 on 4.

I dont think it should have been called at all. That stage of the game on a play that doesnt mean anything to the puck just let it go. Saad shouldnt of been penalized, but IMO it shouldnt of been called period.

I personally believe the NHL directs it's officials to do certain things near the end of games.

Home team down a goal, you can bet your ass the visitors are going to the box at least once when there's less than 5 minutes to go. Things like that. In a 1-1 game, with 2 to go, ref sees an opportunity to open up the game for a dramatic finish and took it. But that might be a bit of tin foil hat, all depends on if you believe sports are influenced or not.

You aren't getting it. It has very little to do with terrible luck. The spot he picked to make the call was with under two minutes remaining of the 7th game of the series. So he didn't make the same call in the previous 400:13 minutes of the series, and chose that moment to decide now would be a good time to call off-setting roughing penalties??! Furthermore, the off-setting penalties was a terrible "subjective" call at face value?

It would be like Hideo Nomo pitching games 1 and 4 of the World Series, then he's pitching game 7 and in the bottom of the ninth Nomo strikes out the last batter to end the game...but the ump decides at that moment he doesn't really think Nomo's pitching windup is one fluid motion so the ump calls a balk.
