He's the ref standing in front of the Discover ad along the boards...you know, the guy who watches Raffy Torres leave his feet and launch himself into Marian Hossa's face and doesn't call a penalty? As Brenden Shanahan said, Walkom actually blows three penalties in this one play...charging, interference, and illegal check to the head.

But what Saad did to Quincy is much worse. Great consistency.

This is pretty standard NHL playoff officiating to be honest. What Quincey does is severe enough to be given a roughing penalty but it's not over the top by faux game 7 standards so the ref lets it go. But when Saad punches back the ref has justification to give Quincey that roughing minor because he can take both players. Penalize both teams, penalize nobody. If the refs would just call the regular season and the playoffs the same we wouldn't have these problems. Basically most game 7s are for the most part played almost without the existence of a roughing penalty and then at some point out of nowhere someone gets called for something everyone has been doing all game.

The issue isn't the officiating difference between the regular season the playoffs...its the officiating difference between the first 400:13 minutes of the Detroit-Chicago series and the call made at the 1:47 mark in the third period of Game 7. It actually goes against your point, because the closing moments of Game 7 was called tighter than the first 400:13 minutes. Oh well.

Yes the whole series.

NHL reffing has taken a significant dive over the last few years thanks to a lot of older guys retiring. VanMassenhoven being the most recent one who was left out of the playoffs this year for some odd reason. Some think he's retiring. I've bitched about the quality of these guys for at least 3 years now and its mainly because everything is starting to get back to 02-03 days. Obstruction is not being called at all anymore (every playoff series has turned into this now) and roughing is apparantly allowed now. Detroit really went at this though and it was actually pretty bizarre how some things weren't called but then again the entire Toronto/Boston series was filled with madness not being called left and right so I wasn't surprised.

Chicago complained though after game 3 is what I read. Some of the things Zetterberg and Abdelkader were doing especially to Toews in those first few games was hilarious from the stand point that nothing was being called and I'm sure the head of the refs in that series told the guys that shit needs to start getting called.

Some extremly glaring stats are things like this.

Detroit played 14 games this playoffs and has the most PP time with just over 84 mins in Powerplay time (as one would expect they've played the most games). 2005-06 teams like Colorado and New Jersey (played 9 games) had 92mins on the PP. Anaheim played in 2 more games back then but had 170mins in Power play time. Whats even more of a joke is if you go back to 02-03 and teams like dallas who played 9 games had 96mins on the PP. St. Louis played in 7 games and had 70mins. That was the supposed "dead puck" era where holding and hooking was constant and even back then they had more PP time.

The obstruction no-calls were maddening because IMO it had a huge impact on the gameplay of the series. It was kind of like watching the Patriots mug the Colts WRs all game...for seven games in a row. I think Detroit's gameplan was to obstruct the Blackhawks and try to annoy Toews. It seemed as the series went on, the Red Wings saw that the refs weren't going to call anything, so that made them even more brazen in their obstruction and treatment of Toews. I thought it was funny how the Red Wings would slash and hack at Toews at the end of shifts right in front of the ref...no call. So why would Detroit stop doing it?
