Dolphins re-signed WR Brian Hartline to a five-year, $30.775 million contract with $12.5 million guaranteed.

The $6.15 million annual average is actually a tick less than expected, but GM Jeff Ireland still overpaid. While Hartline's 2012 stat line looks decent on paper -- 74 catches for 1,083 yards -- he needed top-20 targets to do it and accounted for 16.2 percent of his receptions, 23.4 percent of his yards, and 100 percent of his touchdowns in Week 4 at Arizona. (He only scored once all year.) Hartline is just 26 years old, but he's a middling No. 2 NFL receiver lacking true playmaking ability and long-range upside. Particularly if the Dolphins pair him with Mike Wallace, Hartline will likely be overvalued in 2013 fantasy drafts.

It's reportedly a two-year, $8 million deal. The move further dilutes the wafer-thin quarterback market, and indicates Moore wasn't expecting to draw serious interest as a starter. The deal makes Moore one of the league's better paid backups, and is proof of how much the Dolphins value his veteran presence behind franchise QB Ryan Tannehill. The "top" of the QB market now consists of Brian Hoyer (RFA), Chase Daniel, Jason Campbell and David Garrard. There's never been a worse time to need a quarterback.

Uhh, yes, after Wallace and Jennings he was probably one of the next biggest WR target in FA. Someone was going to pay him that, you think Miami didn't know the market and gave some arbitrary number? Bet he'll perform better than Laurent Robinson and the deal he got.

Look at who gave Laurent Robinson that deal and then think...it can't be hard to beat Robinson's production last year.

$12.5 million guaranteed is not much at all. My guess is the only thing guaranteed is the signing bonus and this year's salary for injury. No specifics yet, but my guess is the signing bonus is $10 million and the other $20 million is base salaries that escalate and a work out bonus here or there. I wouldn't be surprised if his cap hit is less than $3-3.5mil this year. If we get Mike Wallace (which something tells me we won't, because someone like Cleveland or Minny will give him all of their money) then we'll be paying $12mil A YEAR, not a total guarantee. Is Hartline an Andre Johnson or Wes Welker? No. But he has a lot of Jordy Nelson in him (good size, good athleticism, good speed...deceptive for a whitey, basically) and you see what his numbers did his first year in the same offense. He's effective, solid, and has to be covered or can make plays, thus he'll open up whoever they can get as the big play opposite him. This move and money doesn't bother me at all. Some Dolphin fans had a pipe dream of signing Wallace and Jennings....ridiculous money! I'd rather see Wallace and Jared Cook at TE, and resign Fasano for 2 TE sets.

These deals are baffling, IMO. Brian Hartline a solid receiver, but not a $6M a year WR. The Dolphins were losers under his old contract, the new one doesn't make them winners. And while I like Matt Moore, what backup QB should make $4M a year in this cap environment? No one. If you're gonna overpay a white WR, give it to Welker. If you're gonna overpay a backup QB ... uh, don't.

Hartline....not...being...paid...$6mil....a year. Just like Flacco isn't getting $20.1mil a year in reality, or even his cap number.

Last year the average backup QB made $2mil. Moore is at the highly valued end of backups, meaning he is the best at being a backup or even has a chance to be signed for a starting spot. Thus, Davey, that means a person would not be paid the average, but yet the highest number of the range. (shitty backups and young guys are making $500-750k..so there has to be $3.5-4mil vets in order to get a $2mil average)

Look at the league the past 5+ years. QBs are getting hurt. It is the most important position in football. You lose your $15million guy and have to turn to the 2nd year guy being paid $1mil and your season is fucked outside a random Tom Brady thrown in here or there. Good backup QBs are starting to get paid because they are a high value commodity, almost like having a really good closer in baseball. How much cash does Rivera make? How many innings does he pitch in comparison?

I'm not posting with "passion." Neither of these guys are going to win us a Super Bowl by them self, but they do fit pieces of a puzzle that can round out a solid team and they are good team guys (particularly Moore, see how well he handled it on Hard Knocks last year? Also, he literally had Tannehill and other Dolphin players begging him to stay as backup). Their contracts are fair market value, I can't complain and say they were overpaid. Would I have wished they kept Chad Henne 2 years ago instead of Moore? Hell no, and here's his contract.

Sounds exactly like the Laurent Robinson deal from last year. In the last three years of the deal, it balloons up to 8-10M a year, but in the first two, its light. Probably 4M+ or so a year.

I think his numbers were a product of being the only guy in town, but we'll see.

Cook is going to be ridiculously paid. Tennessee avoided giving him the franchise tag because his agent would have argued he was a wide receiver last year...so, you know he's going to be asking for insane money for a TE.

Do you honestly think $12.5M is overpaying for a 1,000 yard WR, who can be a low level #1, and at very worst is a really really good #3?

Like I said Dave, completely reasonable deals. Matt Moore's deal gets him good cash but is basically a 1yr deal. Hartline if he flunks is a 2yr deal at most. If he continues to improve like the plan would be, he's making solid, and equitable #2 pay. For $13 million combines they resigned Randy Starks, Hartline, and Moore. Even if they have Wallace at a cap hit of $6 million tomorrow per speculation, they still have $24 million or so to play with.
