ESPN - Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett doesn't understand why people have made Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo a superstar.

"I don't know why on God's Earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League," Dorsett told Fox Sports Radio. "Tony is very young in his career. Not to say you can't be young in your career and be a superstar because you've got one up there in Minnesota in Adrian Peterson.

"But the thing is this: You have a guy who hasn't done much, and quarterbacks in the NFL, most of them go through this growing curve. He hasn't gone through that growing curve, but he was anointed this great player all of a sudden. Now he's having to live up to that. And obviously Tony has some deficiencies."

Romo threw three interceptions and posted a quarterback rating of 29.6 against the Giants on Sunday after a career performance against the Buccaneers in Week 1.

" ... He's a good player who's still learning how to play in the NFL, and I think the media has given him too much credit for doing nothing," Dorsett told Fox Sports Radio. "He hasn't done anything really in the NFL to deserve all the recognition and visibility he's gotten so far."

I'm going to take what I think will be Nuk's side on this and say I don't like Romo because he's not clutch. The dude steps on his toes in big games, and IMO just isn't a great player overall. Not a bad QB, but not a great one either.

Actually no he doesn't. If romo was putting up his numbers on any other team he would be deemed a great QB. He has 2 playoff losses and you think he is the anti-christ.

A career 94.2 Qb rating .2 less than manning who was 0-3 his first 3 playoff games(which he had better talent around him than Tony does to go along with better coaches).

Romo gets to much blame for having a team that doesn't really have that much real talent. Are running game is good, but Barber is vastly overrated as a everydown back and Jones who shows flashes need to prove he can be more consistant and injury free. The best Back may be Choice who wont get a ton of oppurtunities when barber and jones are healthy.

The Wr lack any talent and our #1 Wr best attribute is that he can block, but can't get open and lacks the speed to do anything vertical. Crayton has analyst saying he has the "best" hands in the league, but drops alot of balls especially in key situations. Miles can be accounted for 1 big play a game, but thats about it. Witten and Bennett are our best offensive weapons which i believe Witten is the best overall TE in the league, but it doesn't help when the coverage double the TE and the WR still cant get open...

I will be shocked if Tony ever wins a SB in Dallas as it stands now as he just doesn't have the talent around him to make up for the terrible coaching...Tony's problem is he trys to make up for the rest of the team and sometimes forces stuff if he had better people around him i highly doubt he would have these types of games..

1.Cortez makes a block and nobody even remember he drops the snap as he get in the endzone and wins. +it was QB romo that loss that game anyways.

2.Crayton doesn't drop that wide open 3rd down slant game totally changes.

3.Last time i checked Romo didn't give up a 77yrd TD run to Mcgahee and a 82 yrd run to fullback turned HB Mclain..

maybe you are talking about the ravens game last yr when Tony missed 2 tackles on mcgahee and Mclain in which they turned both mistackles in to 70+ TD runs?

or maybe philly when the D got there ass handed to them and the only creative play call was the one he drew up in the huddle?

I havent seen anyone outright bash Romo. This statement is complimentary not bashing. He has not deserved the attention hes gotten. Hes a top 5-7 QB no matter how you want to slice it but he is still very erratic. He makes crazy plays noone outside of Favre seems to make routinely. Hes good looking and plays the glamour position on the glamour team.

If anyone thinks for a second hes as capable as Staubach or Aikman when it comes to leadership though they are sadly mistaken. I think old boy vets are disgusted with the culture of underachievement that hit Dal. Parcells was doing a great job putting it back on track and the front office and coaching staff have done a great job of degrading it without really adding anything to make up for it.

Its pretty dumbfounding this team was BY FAR AND AWAY considered the most talented in the league going into last year....this year minus 1 PB caliber player all of a sudden they arent that talented ???

They have a wealth of talent. Most teams would kill to have that roster. But a abysmal coaching staff , a QB whos not a natural leader (non vocal , not a perfectionist , wildly inconsistent, letting TO walk all over him, etc) , and a front office determined to assume they have a SB team already on the field.

Bottom line I dont think anyone dislikes or is mad at Romo other than message board douchebags. Hes a talented guy getting fame and praise not in line with success. Manning may not have won a playoff game at this point but he had already showed the planet his locker room/offensive/game/media management abilities were all world.

Also, I don't see this article as bashing Romo all that much as I see it as Dorsett saying "This kid has declared something he wasn't almost immediately and has had to live up to that pressure". That is probably a huge reason he gets ripped apart like no quarterback in recent memory.

Dorsett does make valid points. He never said he sucks or is a detriment. He just says that he's had to live up to a hype which might be unrealistic.

I'm still glad to have this guy, and that's before I consider what we've had in Dallas since we lost Troy Aikman.

The thing with Romo is.. he's overrated because of the star on his helmet. It's like a Red Sox player or a New York Yankee.. Duke Blue Devil etc.. some teams just overrate their athletes.

If Romo played in Cleveland, no one would talk about him. He's not a bad QB, you can do a lot worse, but he's definitely not a great one. He's average. The thing is.. average QB's get the hype of star QB's when they play on the Dallas Cowboys.

Romo is above average. I think he is in that Jay Cutler, Matt Hasselbeck, Matt Schaub tier, although Hasselbeck has won big games and has led his team to a Super Bowl so I'd put him a notch above these guys.

Problem with Romo is consistency. He needs to become more consistent and learn to go through his progressions and check down rather than just force plays.

Anyways, if I see the word Romo one more time I think I might scream so I gotta get out of this thread.

Odd.. you mean the game ends at the 1:40 mark? Is this the Dallas Cowboys rule? You do realize before that point Romo was facing the likes of Pete Hunter and Jordan Babineaux at cornerback right? You do realize Pete Hunter was out of football for over a year and was selling fucking insurance right? You do realize you had Terrell Owens who was coming off of a season in which he posted nearly 1200 yards and 13 TD's right? Did Pete Hunter shut him down? I mean Romo threw for an incredible 189 yards and a TD against that makeshift secondary .. the same secondary that Rex Grossman dissected only a week later.

I forget when this happened.. I'm assuming the game against the Giants? The same game Romo went 18 of 36 for 200 yards and a TD, as well as the game sealing pick ..which wasn't all that bad considering he had to make a play on 4th down.. but lost in this was a horrible intentional grounding penalty he created as well as a stupid/unnecessary sack he took that would take the Cowboys out of FG range (which would really become critical the next drive Dallas had the ball)..

Last time I checked.. he did however throw a pick 6 to Deshea Townsend two weeks earlier against the Steelers.. a game the Cowboys had full control of in the 4th quarter. He also shit himself in Philadelphia, a game the Cowboys simply had to win to get in.

You know what else Romo can't do? Win in December. You know.. when the games get REALLY important?

2006: 2-3
2007: 2-2 (Dallas lost 3 games the entire season btw)
2008: 1-3

Combined: 5-8

So it's not just the playoffs where Romo vanishes, it's when the games really start getting important.
