El Generico & The Irrational Narrative

Everybody seems very concerned that the WWE will ruin El Generico.

Should they be?

The WWE has always been good when it comes to keeping the masks on luchadors that are pretty staunch in keeping them on.

Rey Mysterio...WCW already unmasked him (in a sea of bad decisions, this is one that is often overlooked for WCW)...but not once has the WWE even attempted to unmask him and its completely overlooked and its never been talked about. Sin Cara speaks for itself...he was signed to SELL MASKS lol...Hunico was masked all throughout developmental. It wasn't until they wanted to turn him away from the "fake Sin Cara" they went in the other direction. They even create a whole new persona for a guy (Ricardo Rodriguez) with a mask, so they can get him in the ring.

But, El Generico is a different animal all together...his entire packaging while taylor made for WWE, its so Indie, its tough to see this company keep the general idea. The character itself is a huge joke, but its morphed into this character that took the Indie world by storm...I just can't see the WWE, where nuance and "winks" are either completely lost on them or once they do "get it" amplify the volume to 50 on that character (see Danielson).

Also, like those other guys...perhaps instead of the WWE leaving them "unchained"...perhaps those talents are so good, they will make anything work...and, I think similarly, Generico will as well.

Also, I think a lot of the narrative you speak comes from an era when Vince took every guy who drew a dime for a territory, when they signed with the WWF, gave them an awful gimmick and most of them got over like shit...

While they haven't done it with the Indie darlings, I think people still have flashbacks of the cartoon era...even though that was 20 years ago.

Where I disagree to an extent is Generico is unlike any of those guys listed. The others seemed to have characters or gimmicks that could have easily translated to what WWE would prefer.

I'm having a hard time believing we're going to see Los General with a black and red mask and a slightly altered theme music. Bryan and Colt were just given different names but what really defined their characters? Nothing really, they were just dudes who did some things well that translated perfectly.

Generico on the other hand is so much different because he's so dependent on his look, his not talking, his music, his entrance, etc.

I'm hopeful, but it's hard to not assume he's going to change dramatically even if history tells us otherwise.

Would I be shocked if he shows up on the FCW page without his mask as Pierre Ginger? No. But let's be fair. The people they've signed have all been given a chance to do the things they did that got them signed to begin with.

The best argument for a BERRYIAL would be Daniel Bryan, imo. But the guy simply can not be buried.

You can not bury Bryan Danielson...IM-POSSIBLE.

They've straddled him as a comedy act now...but he could become a ruthless submission killer at any time.

WWE doesn't do that for newbies. Hell, Punk only got them to do it after he became a big star and they wanted him to sign a new deal.

"Final Countdown" is older than "Ole!", and if you recall ROH was shocked at how expensive it would have been to secure the rights for Bryan Danielson.

WWE almost never does this. It's very, very expensive. Even when you have a "real" band doing a theme, most times its because the band is a fan/friend of the performer or cuts one of those deals to be a featured song for a PPV or something.

To secure the rights to a song...its a lot.

Now, there is a big difference between ROH trying to use a theme and the WWE...but being the WWE it could go two ways...

1) Fan or no fan..."hey, this song will be heard by millions of people regularly...you can get it cheap" in hopes to pop album or singles iTunes sales.
2) Usually not a fan..."hey, its the WWE, they have the money to burn...we want the house"

More often than not, its #2...

Lots of the music the WWE uses is from their own composer/songwriter or its an unknown band that lets them use it for free...they had to pay for Cult of Personality, but that was a one-time thing...no way they will pay for El Generico before he steps into the building.

Aaron Neville is still being billed as "The Man Who Gravity Forgot" in NXT, and at least for now, is not only allowed to do all of his crazy flying, but they appear to be pushing the moves, too.

I'm really curious what they'll name Generico. I mean, I am sure he'll still be the Generic Luchador, but there is a big difference between El Generico and El Burrito Grande.
