ESPN ombudsman disappointed in "The Decision"

"The Decision" earned rebukes for its massive build-up, misleading viewers and blurring the lines between journalism and entertainment, or pretty much the same stuff that outside critics wrote in the wake of the program, which aired two weeks ago.

But Ohlmeyer saved most of his venom for what he perceived to be the biggest of ESPN's violations: paying for a news story. Though money didn't technically change hands between the network and LeBron (proceeds went to charity), Ohlmeyer believes that allowing LeBron and his team to sell an hour's worth of advertising was essentially the same thing. By doing so, ESPN compromised the trust of its viewing audience.

"ESPN should never have traded inventory for access or allowed a subject to select his inquisitor," he writes, "and if that meant losing the exclusive, so be it."

Ohlmeyer didn't blame everyone at the network for the fiasco. He mentions the dichotomy between the newsgathering side of ESPN and the one more focused on entertainment, and scolds the latter for compromising the integrity of the former. Letting LeBron and his team take over the network for 60 minutes was "editorial acquiescence, not an editorial decision."

If anything, Ohlmeyer may have pulled his punches. There was plenty more to criticize about "The Decision," from Michael Wilbon's sycophantic interview with LeBron (which Ohlymeyer backhandedly complimented as "straightforward") to the use of children as props during the program. To Ohlmeyer, though, such matters must have seemed trivial compared to ESPN doing its best impression of The National Enquirer and paying for a scoop.

After the column appeared on ESPN.com, the network released a statement saying "it aggressively seeks and embraces feedback of all kinds."

I don't know where Don Ohlmeyer has been for the last 10 years, but he must have just started to watch ESPN recently. That is the only way to explain his shock and anger.

Ohlmeyer is upset that ESPN essentially sold air time to LeBron James...I say, who cares? Is there really anything on ESPN worth watching? Maybe the occasional mid-major college football Thursday night game between Air Force and Toledo, but thats about it.

Ohlmeyer is upset that ESPN let LeBron do whatever he wanted with his air time, and that ESPN ceded 'institutional control' over what went over the airwaves. ESPN is also the same network that WANTED Rush Limbaugh to speak his mind, that gives imbeciles like Skip Bayless and Tony Kornheiser carte blanche to spew their banal venom in all directions ON A DAILY BASIS, and that has Bud Selig on the air moments after the steroid scandal breaks and the "toughest" question that gets asked is "how are the Brewers doing?"

Ohlmeyer's comment that "ESPN compromised the trust of its viewing audience" is laughable, because ESPN lost the trust of its viewing audience many, many years ago. When a disgraced sleazeball like Jim Herrick gets booted from his third University and the follow-up interview is conducted by Dick Vitale ("Jim, how is your son taking this?"), when ESPN continually hires analysts like Steve Phillips and Michael Irvin, who should be serving time in jail and instead of being given air time, when ESPN's baseball coverage consists solely of Yankees and Red Sox, when ESPN's college basketball coverage is devoted to UNC, Duke, and Dick Vitale's senile rantings....does Ohlmeyer still think the viewing audience "trusts" ESPN's coverage of sports?

You make a lot of good points. Maybe Ohlmeyer had finally seen/heard enough. Maybe this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I honestly watch ESPN for about 40 minutes in the morning while eating breakfast and waking up to get all the scores and that's about it.

Also will watch 30 for 30 when it's on. You can keep the rest of their crap. Their sports coverage is disgustingly bad.
 
I'm a breakfast SC guy, too. Other than that, ESPN in nothing but college hoops network for me.

Shows like Baseball Tonight, NFL Live, etc are obsolete with leagues having 24 hour networks.

And I'll never understand why people get into the fake argument shows.

ESPN did a fine job for a number of years covering sports, that doesn't mean their last 10-15 years hasn't been a complete and utter joke.

Riiiight......in an age where people have 600 channels of programming, 5 of which are solely dedicated to remodeling your kitchen, we should thank our lucky stars that ESPN is here because NO ONE ELSE would have ever thought of something like "Sportscenter". :flush:

how long would of it of took, what kind of model would they have had, would it have been successful enough to warrant the type of coverage espn brings in every sport

yes eventually a sports channel would of showed up but espn did put a great formula together that most people enjoyed watching sticking to the highlights so yeah espn did do something great so :smugusa:

espn lost relevency once people started understanding what the word "internet" meant, and that it was pretty easy to get on it. thats only like... 20 years ago.
