Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante vs. Yoel Romero slotted for Sept. 10 Strikeforce event
by John Morgan and Dann Stupp on Jul 21, 2011 at 10:55 am ET
A light-heavyweight bout between former champion Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante (10-3 MMA, 3-2 SF) and newcomer and Olympian Yoel Romero (4-0 MMA, 0-0 SF) will be part of September's "Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Semifinals" event.
Sources close to the negotiations told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) verbal agreements are in place for the right.
It's not clear if it'll be part of the Showtime-televised main card of the Sept. 10 event.
As MMAjunkie.com reported earlier today, the show takes place at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. It features the semifinal round of the organization's eight-man heavyweight grand prix.
Cavalcante fights for the first time since losing his light-heavyweight title via TKO to Dan Henderson in March. The loss snapped a three-fight winning streak for the Black House fighter, who won the title from Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal in August 2010.
Romero heads to Strikeforce with a perfect 4-0 record on the German fight circuit. Prior to launching his MMA career, which has included four dominating knockout victories (two via his opponents quitting), Romero won a silver medal in wrestling at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
