Coach Look-In

MarkRicht.jpg

Head Coach: Mark Richt

Mark Richt is the current head coach of the University of Georgia Bulldogs football team. His previous affiliations were with Florida State University as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and also with East Carolina University. Currently in his ninth season at Georgia, Richt is the longest-tenured active head football coach in the Southeastern Conference, one year ahead of Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson.

Mark Richt started his coaching career in 1985 as a volunteer quarterbacks coach for the Florida State Seminoles (FSU), serving under Bobby Bowden. Richt left Seminoles to join East Carolina University as their offensive coordinator in 1989. However, after just one year at East Carolina, Richt returned to the Seminoles to serve as the quarterbacks coach and later as offensive coordinator. Under Richt’s direction, the FSU had some of the most explosive offenses in the nation, in his seven years as offensive coordinator of Seminoles Richt directed the nation’s top five offense in scoring offense on five occasions, top 12 in total offense five times, and top 12 in passing offense five times. The 2000 Seminoles offense finished the regular season ranked first nationally in total offense (549.0 ypg), first in passing offense (384.0 ypg), and third in scoring offense (42.4 ppg).

While at Florida State, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners at quarterback in Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke and was part of two national championships (1993 and 1999) as an assistant coach.

Richt was hired as head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs before the 2001 season, replacing Jim Donnan. In his first seven seasons at Georgia, Richt's teams have won two Southeastern Conference Championships (2002 and 2005) and three SEC Eastern Division titles (2002, 2003 and 2005), represented the SEC in 3 BCS bowl appearances (which he is 2-1 in) along with five AP Poll top ten finishes from 2002-2005, 2007.

Richt is married to the former Katharyn Francis of Tallahassee, Florida. The couple have four children: Jonathan (born March 11, 1990), David (born December 1, 1994), and two children they adopted from the Ukraine in 1999, Zach (born May 15, 1996), and Anya (born February 13, 1997) who was born with a rare disorder known as proteus syndrome.

ESPN's College GameDay featured a documentary on October 25, 2008 entitled 'GameDay looks at the Richt family's adoption of a young boy and girl from Ukraine' detailing the Richts' personal story of the adoption of their two youngest children Zach and Anya. The Richts had declined on several occasions to publicly share their adoption story before deciding to proceed with the hope that it would encourage other families to explore the rewards of adoption.

im going to do an indepth coverage of ever position so like a qb spotlight, wr spotlight, linebacker spotlight and go into detail on every player.

Can someone please make me some banner things that says something like Quarterback Spotlight? If Yes, i would need a banner for:

Quarterback
Runningback
Wide Recievers
Offensive Line
Defensive Line
Linebackers
Secondary
Special Teams

thanks if someone could do this :)

Quarterback Spotlight

8vrj8p.jpg

Coach Mark Richt has a reputation as one of the finest at developing a quarterback, This strength will be put to the test as three year starter Matthew Stafford decided to skip his senior year to enter the draft. The decision turned out to be great for him as the Detroit Lions picked him first in the draft. However, his decision greatly hindered Georgia's quarterback situation. Former backup Joe Cox will now start for the team in Red and Black. Cox is a natural born leader and is very accurate. Also, as a fifth-year senior, he knows the playbook inside and out so don't expect offensive coordinator Mike Bobo to shrink down the playbook. Cox was an elite quarterback coming out of high school and is loved by Georgia fans for one game. In 2006, he came in the 4th quarter against Colorado and lead a huge comeback. Unfortunately, Stafford was too much for Cox to beat out for the starting job. So instead of transferring, Cox waited his turn to play anxiously. This situation is very similar to David Greene and D.J. Shockley in 2005. If Cox is anywhere near as good as Shockley was for his senior season, the Bulldogs are in for a big season.

Behind Cox is where the quarterback situation gets dicey. Redshirt sophomore Logan Gray is very athletic and has been very impressive in spring practice. Gray is so athletic that he was the team's punt returner. Thats right. UGA's third string quarterback was their punt returner. He is said to run a 4.3 40. Richt plans on using Gray in a change-of pace role. He could spell Cox from time to time and add a new wrinkle to the offense.

Along, with Cox and Gray are two prized recruits Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger. Both attended the Elite-11 QB Camp and looked very good. Murray won best quarterback while Mettenberger won Strongest Arm. They both enrolled early so if injuries occur, they are ready to play. Murray is very athletic and accurate. He broke many records in Florida High School. Mettenberger has a prototypical body at 6'5" 230 lbs and his arm rivals Stafford's. Richt would like to redshirt both of these incoming freshman.

Runningback Spotlight

rrt4ys.jpg

Along with the departure of Stafford, Georgia's top running back Knowshon Moreno also left for the NFL Draft. Moreno was one of the most talented runningbacks in Georgia's history and wowed fans with his balance and vision. Without Moreno, the running back rotation is wide open. Richt will most likely do running back by committee like he did from 2003-2006 with Kregg Lumpkin, Thomas Brown, and Danny Ware. However, that might all change if one runningback separates himself from the pack like Moreno did in 2007.

Redshirt Sophomore Caleb King is the favorite to get the most carries this year. He was a high sought after recruit coming out of high school and was predicted to become the best running back in school history when he commited to UGA. Unfortunately, he broke his leg really bad his senior year of high school. In his time at Georgia, he has little confidence and does not appear to have the explosiveness that he had in high school. He just did not have "it" when he played. Reports say that King looks like his former self now in spring practice. If the reports are true he might run away with the starting spot.

Another candidate for the starting spot is sophomore Richard Samuel. Samuel is a physical specimen that is the strongest and fastest running back on the team. He also has a major fumbling problem and has little vision. He might move to linebacker (he played in high school) if injuries occur.

Some darkhorses for the job are freshman Carlton Thomas, Dontavius Jackson, and freshman Washaun Ealey. Thomas is a change-of-pace back with blistering speed. He is small at 5'7" 165 lbs but is believed to be strong enough to hold up over the course of the season. He dominated in the annual G-Day Game (Georgia's Spring Game).

GeorgiaBulldogsChiseBanner01.png

Wide Receiver Spotlight

15dkx09.jpg

Georgia has had a recent history of bad wide receiver play. They have dropped passes, failed to get open, etc. However that all changed in 2008 with Mohamed Massaquoi and AJ Green splitting the field. Massaquoi graduated but the wide receivers still look very promising.

AJ Green broke out last year against Arizona State and never looked back. He caught for over 900 yards and 8 touchdowns. He is one of the best wide receivers in the nation and is considered the best deep threat in the SEC. His hands are spectacular and he is one of the best at adjusting in mid-air to catch a ball. If a Georgia quarterback puts the ball in his viscinity, he will come down with it. He might struggle some early as he will have constant double teams on him. Other wide receivers need to step up to help out Green.

Michael Moore is the favorite to line up opposite Green. He had a very good year in the slot last year. However, he might be better suited for the slot.

Lookout for freshman Marlon Brown. Brown, a Tennessee native, was one of the best wideouts in high school. At 6'5" 205 lbs, he is ready to contribute and has drawn comparisons to NFL star Anquan Boldin.

To add depth is Israel Troupe and Taverras King. Troupe is incredibly athletic while King has great speed. Both players can spread the field and be dangerous. However, both are very raw and probably won't contribute for another year.

Two years ago, a young Georgia offensive line gelled after a Tennessee thrashing. The line opened holes for emerging superstar Knowshon Moreno. After the Tennessee game, Moreno rushed for 157 yards, 188 yards, 196 yards, 101 yards, and 124 yards in a five game stretch that helped Georgia ascend to a national championship contender. The dawgs won out by large margins in the game including a 41-10 rout of Hawaii in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. The line was led by star tackle Trinton Sturdivant.

Now to 2008... UGA came in preseason ranked number one. They had everything offensively. A superstar at quarterback, running back, wide reciever, and a o-line littered with potential All-SEC players. Then the injury bug hit. Sturdivant went down in spring practice and missed all of last year. Injuries continued and the line had to continually be reshuffled with players playing new positions every week. Luckily, Moreno could hide the lines flaws for the most part en rout to a 1400 yard season. Now, Moreno and Stafford are gone and the o-line will have to show its worth. If everyone stays healthy, the line should be one of if not the best in the country. It will be extremely deep and talented. They have eight different players with starting experience over the last two years (doesn't include Kiante Tripp who has moved to defense).

At left tackle, Richt hopes that Sturdivant is ready after tearing his MCL last spring. If not, then junior Clint Boling probably will play for him. If Sturdivant can play then Boling will play guard. Boling is one the versitile players in the country having starting experience at every line position except center. Sturdivant is a dominant run blocker that became famous for Moreno's toss sweep play.

At left guard, Boling should start here but if he can't, then sophomore Cordy Glenn will. Glenn started ten games as a freshman and was on First Team All-SEC Freshman team. Backing him up is senior Vince Vance. Vance started last year early on but didn't get the job done. He has worked hard to get playing time this year.

At center, Georgia has a future stud in sophomore Ben Jones. Jones was expected to struggle but ended up being exceptional and he played like a veteran. He did alright against Alabama's Mount Codyand was on First Team All-SEC Freshman team also. If Jones go down due to injury, then watch out for incoming freshman Dallas Lee. Lee, a 3-star recruit, out of Buford, Georgia is extremely powerful and explosive. He has great tenacity and once he improves his form, he will be great.

At right guard, Chris Davis hopes to return from an injury in spring practice to be ready for the season. Davis, a junior, started last year. In fact, him and Clint Boling are the two most experienced linemen with 49 starts between them. Backing up Davis is sophomore Tanner Strickland. Strickland appeared in 13 games last year and provides offensive line depth.

At right tackle, sophomore Justin Anderson looks to have a breakout year. He was on First Team All-SEC Freshman team last year (Georgia's third offensive line on team). He is explosive and aggressive.

This year, Georgia will have a young, but experience line that will be one of the most talented in the nation.

Defensive Line Spotlight

2vcx8c6.jpg

For Georgia to contend for any championships this year, the defensive line must improve. Defensive Coordinator Willie Martinez's system is based off getting pressure with the front four. When this happens, the Bulldogs have one of the best defenses in the nation. When they don't get pressure, well.... things like last season happen, one of the worst defenses in Georgia history. Before last year, Martinez always had great defensive linemen. He had Quentin Moses and Charles Johnson in 2006. In 2007, Marcus Howard constantly got pressure with his speed. Last year, no player stepped up and the defense failed.

This year, dawg fans hope that having two of the best defensive tackles in the nation will give the defensive ends more one-on-one matchups which will lead to pressure. These two tackles are Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins. Owens was injured minutes into the season last year with a torn ACL. He missed the entire season; however, he was granted a medical redshirt. Atkins was solid last year and with the senior duo back they should garner constant double teams. This will open up the oppurtunities for the ends.

The player to watchout for is end Justin Houston. Houston has all the skills to be a dominant end and showed promise last year. He also dominated the Spring Game in which he had three sacks. Unfortunately, he was suspended for the first two games for violation of team rules. This will hurt as the dawgs were already razor-thin at the position. Other ends that will help are Rod Battle and DeMarcus Dobbs. Battle has struggled to stay healthy. Dobbs has trouble creating constant pressure and is undersized. However he is very opportunistic and is a playmaker. He had two interceptions last year. One in which he returned an interception for a 78 yard touchdown. The other might have salvaged the season. Georgia was in a shootout with Kentucky and the Wildcats were driving down the field for the game winning touchdown when Dobbs picked off a halfback screen pass.

Linebacker Spotlight

20f8dco.jpg

The strength of the defense this year will be the linebacking core. The group is led by Rennie Curran. Curran is undersized yet he is constantly around the ball. He led the team in tackles with 115. The second leading tackler only had 76. Curran plays full speed every minute of every game and is one of the best players in the nation. He will start at the outside linebacker spot. The other outside linebacker spot will be filled by Darryl Gamble. Gamble was a surprise last year and is the team's third leading tackler with 60 tackles. He is a playmaker also, returning two interceptions for touchdowns in the game against LSU. Backing them up will be Darius Dewberry. Dewberry, a senior, is very athletic and has shown signs of being great but has never put it together. Hopefully he will breakout this year.

At the inside linebacker position, the starter will be Akeem Dent. Dent will replace Dannell Ellerbe. Ellerbe was great as a junior but struggled with injuries last year. Dent started at the strongside linebacker position last year.

Secondary Spotlight

Last year, with the defensive line struggling to pressure the quarterback, the secondary was constantly picked apart. The secondary lost their best player in cornerback Asher Allen so the secondary must improve.

The best player in the secondary is now strong safety Reshad Jones. Jones scared Georgia fans earlier in the year as he declared for the draft. Georgia had already lost many players and were thin at safety. The decision was a shock as Jones was not projected to go very high while if he stayed for another year, he would likely be a first round draft pick. Luckily for dawg fans, Jones changed his mind and returned to the University of Georgia. Jones led the bulldogs in interceptions with 5 and was the second leading tackler with 76 tackles. He is a headhunter that can deliver bone crushing hits. Unfortunately, he goes for the big hit too much which can lead to missed tackles. Backing him up at strong safety is Quentin Banks. Banks is a superstar in the making but has battled injuries. He can deliver a big hit and is skilled in coverage.

At free safety, Bryan Evans will be the starter. He was the nickel corner back last year but struggled mightily. He constantly got beat in coverage and was exploited numerous times by opposing offensive coordinators. Due to this, Richt decided to move him to safety where his superior athleticism should be shown. He needs to become a playmaker and he looked like he was heading that way in the spring. His back-up will be Sanders Commings. He is very athletic and has Georgia fans excited over his potential. His backup will be John Knox. Knox looked good in the spring.

At the cornerback spots the starters will be Prince Miller and Vance Cuff. Miller is a veteran that should have a very solid year. He is short but is explosive to the ball. Cuff showed promise last year and played more and more as the season went on. He should have a breakout year. The nickelback corner will be Brandon Boykin. Boykin was overshadowed by veterans last year but was very productive for a frosh. He will contend for a starting spot as the year goes on. Another cornerback is Sanders Commings. He is very athletic and has Georgia fans excited over his potential.

Watch out for incoming freshman Branden Smith. He will see significant playing time this season and is a playmaker. He has blazing speed and will be a difference maker. He is so athletic that he may even see some time on offense.

Defense Dominates G-Day Game!

3433591088_da2022174b_b%20copy.jpg

If Saturday’s G-Day game at Sanford Stadium in Athens is any indication, defense could be the strong point of Mark Richt’s club this fall.

The game’s only touchdown came with nine seconds remaining and the Red and Black offenses combined for just 329 yards as the Red team took a 13-3 victory before 42,458 fans in a spring game televised nationally by ESPN.

The Red team’s Joe Cox, heir apparent to Matthew Stafford at quarterback, hit 9 of 16 passes for 105 yards and was sacked three times while Aron White led the winners in receiving with 50 yards on three catches.

Carlton Thomas paced the Red team in rushing with 60 yards on eight carries.

The Red contingent was made up mostly of projected offensive starters, while the front line defense played for the Black side.

Logan Gray was 9-13-0 for 91 yards while guiding the Black team, which netted just five rushing yards on the day.

“We didn’t see (big plays) today, but I think we do (have enough offense),” Richt said. “When we get everybody together and focused on the first team, I think we’ll be fine. I’d feel better with the score we had than with a 31-30 game.”

The best news came on the defensive side of the ball as three Red team defenders had at least three solo tackles. Safety Baccari Rambo and linebacker Nick Williams each had five tackles for the winning side.

The Black’s Justin Houston led his team with four unassisted takedowns and three sacks.

“I feel like I preformed pretty well,” Houston said. “Spring gave me a chance to get a lot better and get a lot of reps, and that’s what you have to do.

“Last season we gave up a lot of points, especially in the last (regular season game against Georgia Tech), so the defense took it as a challenge to get better and make sure it doesn’t happen in the fall.”

In 2008 the Bulldogs gave up 24.5 points per game, including 49 to Florida, 45 to Georgia Tech, 41 to Alabama and 38 to LSU — all but the LSU games losses.

The Red team got on the board first when Blair Walsh kicked a 51-yard field goal at the second quarter’s 13:19 juncture, and Jamie Lindley tied it up with 2:41 to go before the half with a 24-yard kick.

There was no scoring in the third frame but with 2:13 left in the G-Day game, Andrew Jenson nailed a 48-yard field goal to put the Reds ahead to stay, 6-3.

The only touchdown came with nine ticks on the clock as Thomas broke loose for a 20-yard TD run.

“That touchdown felt good,” Thomas said. “I know a lot of people think our running game will have a big drop-off with Knowshon (Moreno) gone, but we’re all determined to pick it up.”

Walsh split the pipes on the point after for the 13-3 final
