For the A/V gurus out there.

This is probably any easy question for the A/V gurus out there.

Just recently bought a used Ps3. I have component cables. I have a TV that is 1080i, not 1080p. It's kinda old by today's standards. I does have an HDMI input.

Do I need to get HDMI cables for the Ps3 games to look better, or will there be no difference?

I know for Blu-Ray movies I would need the full effect of the 1080p tv, so I am assuming it's the same for the Ps3 gaming side.

HDMI might be marginally better but you might not even be able to tell the difference on a 1080i TV with component cables. That would be the same for games or Blu-Ray movies since it is going to be down-res'd from 1080p to 1080i for your set.

Yeah that's what I figured, but wasn't too sure. I'm due for a TV upgrade in the next year.

I have a 1080i w/HDMI input. I use a set of PS3 5-wire component cables to TV in, although I could use the HDMI PS3 out to TV in, and I do so b/c I record all PS3 media to my HD-PVR which is 720p only.

However, viewing media on my other PS3 in the living room through HDMI, the naked eye sees not much difference, if any, between 720p and 1080i, so if you don't want to spend 15-20 more buck and get a set of HDMI cables, like I did, I wouldn't. I certainly would not spend more than that for a set of HDMI cables. Been there, done that, and the result was negligible. You prob would see a small amount of diff with the naked eye using HDMI from the PS3 to a 1080p set. But you say your set, as well as mine, is a 1080i.

If you stay with component cables, I would invest in a 5-wire set of PS3 component cables.

Not an A/V guru, lol, but hope this helps in some way.

I just bought a used Ps3 so it just had the regular red and whites.

I had to buy the gamestop generic component pack cables that's all they had and I didn;t feel like getting something else before I knew what I needed or driving around. They were only like 10 bucks I think, just basic component cables.

And you should still get a very good pic with those cables. I have some of those. The diff isn't that much. I just needed all 5 wires in one tube to run throught the wall. You should be good.

I don;'t think the cables I have will display in 1080i for some bizzare reason. I think I need an HDMI just for the 1080i.

No you don't.
Component cables are capable of 1080i.

Your right,,,I didn't go through the menu properly.

Got the setup to work right and I'm at 1080i.

But I am seeing some wavy lines throughout the screen. Probably just a piece of crap used component generic cables then right?

You might just be better off leaving it at 720p. Not a big difference between 1080i and 720p, you have to go from 720p to 1080p to have visual results and even then that isn't a huge leap for video games. Did you go into the video setup on your PS3 and put 1080i as an output option? I'm sure you did but it's worth retracing your steps if everything isn't working right.

As others have mentioned, monoprice.com is the best place to get an HDMI cable if you want to go that route. You can get a gold tipped 6' cable for $10 vs. $50 for the same cable at Best Buy.

I made sure I had the video output setup right.

I was consufed initially, because the setup screen was a little bit quirky when you selected the options, but I finally got it selected to read 1080i.

I'll take yours and Riley's advice and go the online route if I go with the HDMI cable.

i use 720p for both my 360 and ps3. i have hdmi for ps3 and component for 360. I dont see any difference really

my tv does not support 1080p either
