I like it OK, but I think I need more time with it. I have two issues:
1. The sparse world. Perhaps I'm comparing these types of games too much to Burnout Paradise, which I absolutely loved, but this world is spread out with not a whole lot in between. I can get over that a little, but the roads themselves are really straight and really long -and dare I say, at times boring. I guess that's more realistic, but the effect in the end is not as interesting as something a little more compact. In that way it's a little more like Hot Pursuit (I'm hoping NFS: Most Wanted fills this exploration gap left by Paradise.) I guess I love free-roaming. I love finding ramps, jumps, shortcuts, barriers, billboards. So far in Horizon, there doesn't seem to be as much to actually find when you free roam, with the exception of the Upgrade billboards that are almost impossible to miss. (Disclaimer: I'm the type of guy who hunted 199 pigeons in GTA IV with a map and then had to revisit 150 of the locations to find the one I missed).
2. The car you want to race is never eligible for the event you are presented with. I'm comparing this now to the game's namesake: Forza 4. One thing I adored about Forza 4 is that I could hop in my car/class of choice and almost every event in the game would be something for that car (and a couple alternatives if I wanted to switch). I could tailor the game to the cars I liked. In Horizon, I upgraded my little racing Citroen, did the one single race it was eligible for, and now I can't see anything else on the map it can race in. OK. Fine. Bought a 2-Eleven, but that's S-class, and I currently have no S-class races.
Now on to the things I love:
1. The Lotus 2-Eleven. I knew I love this car, but to be able to drive around in this is a dream. Do yourself a favor and drop 70,000 CR on it.
2. The handling/damage/sim. I feel this is a good balance. You can brake later and harder than in Forza 4, and if you do hit the brakes too late -or you know, forget altogether- it doesn't punish you.
3. Racing other drivers you see around while free roaming. This is how I can actually end up racing my 2-Eleven. Anywhere I am, I can pull up behind another Horizon AI contestant, Press X, and we're off racing to some spot on the map. Unfortunately, so far all my challengers have been "easy". You can also be driving from A to B to get to an event, challenge a driver on the way there and it may take you back to A. It would be great to be able to challenge a driver, AND select a random finish line where ever you want.
