In general, like fantasy shit, I think it'd be unfair to bitch about that shit because we're scraping the bottom of the barrel in both genres.

I didn't mean to come across as a dick either. I was just speaking in the context of some people claiming that it wasn't a good story for an action game...which I think is silly, because think there are very few good stories for action games.

In regards to the big "reveal" in Act 3...

 

While playing with Medellin and Swarley I said "I bet it's going to be zombies" and Med said "I swear if it is I'm done with this game!" Of course it basically is and he is obviously still playing but it was funny as shit. After dealing with those lambent "zombies" for a while I said "Man, this is eerily familiar to Uncharted 1" and Swarley said "I was going to say the exact same thing."

Sure, tons of games have done the zombie type thing. But this was nearly exactly the same as Uncharted. In both games they are traveling to an abandoned city only to find out that its inhabitants are now "infected".

The game play, graphics, cut scenes, co-op, weapons and everything else is still amazing though.

I didn't think you were being dick. I agree with you. Gears of War is just like a big action movie. Its a good story for an action game. It gave us some pretty awesome moments too.

I try not to be very critical of video game storylines. You can't hold them to the same standard as a movie or book because the story is always secondary to gameplay.

Dramatic moments are unintentionally hilarious like the incident in the stadium. the michael Bay reference comes from the fact that michael Bay movies are big stupid fun, much like the Gears franchise. This Story is an afterthought, opening chapters; why should we care about Prescott? 3 games in, OH marcus has Daddy issues. Wait, which carmine is this?

The story doesnt draw you in, I dont care what happens to Marcus fenix, if a carmine dies another one takes his place without incident. Im not here for story, and gears doesnt deliver much of one.

I am enjoying the Gears 3 story. Then again, I'm a Gears nut and I have read all the books, so that may be the reason. There are definite plot holes if you only play the games that are filled in through the books...

Eh, it's got a great ending, and the game itself is great. But overall the storytelling is WILDLY inconsistent. You play a guy trying to redeem himself for the bad things that he's done, and he constantly talks about regretting killing and having a purpose, etc...yet he murders any and everything in his path without a second thought. It's really the downfall of Rockstar storytelling in general. GTAish games give you that open world that allow you to be a monster but try to allow you to do so within the context of a story that tries to paint your character as somewhat good/redeemable.

I don't know what to tell you, other than you're kind of being a douche trying to convince ME how I feel about the game. In this in particular, the reason that I feel like they've finally learned how to tell a story is that the campaign itself is actually engaging me. The first two acts really sucked me into the world and actually made me like the characters. I'm sorry it didn't do that for you, but arguing about it and using examples like a Zelda game and RDR isn't going to give me the impression that you know better than I do, nor is it going to make me say to myself "he's right, I no longer enjoy the storytelling of this campaign".

I just want to make it clear that Gears 3 is an excellent game and the most fun ive ever had in a 4 player co-op. While the story isnt much to tlk about; unless asked to tlk about it; Gears 3 is one of the Best gameplay experiences of the year, IMO
