Giants/Jets will be allowed to bid for new home to host cold-weather 2014 Superbowl

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Giants and Jets want to bring the Super Bowl to their new stadium in New Jersey in 2014.

After receiving approval from a league committee to bid on an NFL title game, the teams announced on Thursday that they will submit a proposal to host what would be a cold weather title game in four years.

The new 82,500-seat stadium is scheduled to open next year.

The NFL owners' Super Bowl Advisory Committee allowed the bid despite the traditional requirement that host regions have a minimum temperature of 50 degrees or indoor stadiums.

The advisory committee gave approval with the understanding that the bid represents a unique, once-only circumstance to celebrate the new stadium and the great heritage of the NFL in the New York region.

The New Meadowlands Stadium Company, which is building the new stadium, has to submit a preliminary proposal to the NFL by April 1. The winning bid will be announced at the end of May.

"It's time for the biggest game in football to be played on the biggest stage in the world," Jets owner Woody Johnson and Giants co-owner Jonathan Tisch said in a joint statement as chairmen of the bid committee. "We are confident that the appeal and prestige of the New York City metropolitan region, coupled with the innovative capabilities of our brand-new state-of-the-art facility, can provide a unique and exciting experience for the teams and fans, as well as the entire league and the sport of football.

"And, of course, we would love to bring the Super Bowl and its significant economic benefits to New York and northern New Jersey," they added.

A New York/New Jersey Super Bowl would generate hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity, and serve as a major boost for the area, creating hundreds of jobs related to staging the game, the teams said.

"The National Football League and our organization are blessed with a great tradition in the metropolitan New York region, and the Giants and Jets new home is a continuation of that tradition," said John Mara, president and CEO of the Giants. "Our building playing host to the Super Bowl in 2014 would allow our organizations and this region to celebrate that tradition with our biggest game, and we welcome the opportunity to work with our community to make that happen."

The new $1.6 billion stadium will be the first constructed to serve as the home stadium of two NFL teams, and it will host up to 20 games a season, more than any other venue.

It also holds the distinction of being the largest privately financed stadium in U.S. history.

The Super Bowl would join an impressive list of significant events scheduled for the new stadium, including highly anticipated college football matchups of Navy vs. Notre Dame and Army vs. Rutgers, and stops on the Bon Jovi and U2 world concert tours.

"Even though our stadium is months away from completion, with this bid, it is setting an early precedent of what's to come," said Steve Tisch, chairman and executive vice president of the Giants.

Highlights of the new stadium include four massive HD video display boards in each of the stadium corners; a ribbon board that circles the interior bowl; HD monitors throughout the stadium; and 20 HD video pylons.

Outside the stadium, a 350,000-square-foot outdoor plaza will offer fan activities and pregame entertainment zones. A signature amenity of the stadium will be a new rail line that will drop off passengers in front of the stadium.

I like it I like it a lot

Gary Myers of the New York Daily News reports Commissioner Roger Goodell clearly supports awarding Super Bowl XLVIII to the Giants' and Jets' new stadium in 2014, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft will lobby other owners for it, but Steelers owner Dan Rooney has a big problem with playing the most important game of the year in potentially cold and nasty weather.

Even though the new Giants-Jets Stadium will have no roof, Goodell gave every indication he's on board. Even though he doesn't have a vote and says he must remain neutral, his endorsement may be the deciding factor.

"I think there are real benefits to the league considering this as an option," Goodell said Friday during his annual state of the league address at the Super Bowl.

From a playing football perspective, I've never understood why teams play seasons and playoffs through whatever weather scenario in their way, but heaven forbid they do it during the title game.

Why should snow be allowed during a Conference Championship but be forbidden for a Super Bowl?

From a financial perspective it makes plenty of sense, but it should be about football first and weather is part of the game.

If that's the case, why bother having it at a neutral site?

What you're doing is making it more likely that the better team may not win, simply because they're not used to the climate, even if they were far and away a better team during the course of the season and the playoffs.

Because the event has become more than just the game, it would be hard to plan a Super Bowl in two weeks because you wouldn't know the site until then......thus one of the main reasons there is a neutral site.

So why not play every single game in a dome. If weather is going to factor into who gets to playoffs and into the Superbowl, it should factor into the Superbowl itself should it not? Wind might aid/kill a FG, rain might cause an extra fumble or dropped pass, etc etc. These things all year long help shape the wins and losses teams get during the year do they not? Teams could have entirely different seasons if they played in a dome every week, but that's not how the sport is played.

This Superbowl should have happened a couple years ago, but oh no the Saints ran into cold ass Chicago and lost because "it was cold and they aren't used to it" or was it because Chicago was the better team that day?

Weather should not be an excuse for losing, the better team should win regardless.

Every team in the NFL is in a division with hot/cold/snow/rain climates, everyone is used to weather. These are professional athletes that have played 100's of football games and they should be able to perform no matter where they play.

The Saints ran into Chicago for one reason.

Chicago was the better team in the regular season and thus had homefield advantage in the playoff game.

That's what it's there for. To have the the Super Bowl in a cold weather city defeats the purpose of having it at a neutral site in the first place.

You don't get the point. The NFC champion was decided in the cold and snow, which is okay, but the Superbowl cannot be decided that way?

Now let me ask this, did Chicago earn that homefield with zero aid from weather whatsoever? Or did they earn it by winning 13 + 1 playoff game (i think they went 13-3?) games where rain/snow/wind played zero role? So they are the best team in the NFC using those factors to get to the Superbowl, but the best team in the league cannot be decided with those very same factors? That's kind of ridiculous is it not?

Does playing in a fieldturfed dome not give an advantage to a team that plays on fieldturf rather than a team that plays on grass?

Does playing in a hot city provide a disadvantage to a team that typically plays in a cold city?

Exactly.

Everyone loves the idea of having the SB in a bad weather city....until they actually do it, and we end up with a SB played in a fucking blizzard with 10 completed passes, missed FG's, 6 fumbles, everyone slipping and falling, altered gameplans, and sloppy play.

Why would anyone want to see a champion crowned that way? Stupid.

But you are accepting an AFC and NFC champion that way...and that's not stupid?

Retarded logic.

Those home games are earned, and if you play in a cold weather city, chances are your team is built for the climate anyway.

Playing the SB in bad weather turns the game into a farce. Teams work hard all year to get a chance to win the title, the players and fans deserve the game to played under the fairest, most optimum playing conditions.

I think you're the one who doesn't get it.

The NFC Championship was decided in a cold weather city because the team that hosted the game earned the right to.

The answer to your first question is "Minimal, if any"

The answer to your second question is again "Minimal". The only possible advantage for a dome team is the element of speed and sound being enclosed in the stadium.

The answer to your third question is "Absolutely not".

The home field advantage of a southern team or a dome team is nowhere near that of the potential homefield advantage of a cold weather team in January.

It's not debatable. Especially this time of year. Can you honestly sit there and tell me that's the same as a team, no matter what their style of play is, that plays in a warmer environment coming into a 20 degree or less situation?

Again, Chicago earned it. They were the better team, so they got to be home for the NFC championship. Just like the Saints earned the right to hold the NFC Championship inside their dome this year and subsequently win.

In fact, by insinuating that New Orleans lost to Chicago simply because of the weather, you're kind of proving my point.
