Greg Paulus... the Michigan QB?

Yeah Anthony Epps from the 95-96 Kentucky basketball team decided he wanted to play WR in his 5th year for Kentucky and i dont think he ever saw the field

OK here's what I gather from the "fifth year" talk.

A red shirt allows a player to gain a year of eligibility in any one sport. The NCAA put in place that a participant in a sport could not play more than four years of that sport, as it coincides with the time taken to earn a bachelor degree at an American college. Thus four years of a sport would equal four years of studies. The red shirt rule was introduced in the 60's? Anyways it gives a player an extension of their eligibility. As long as they don't appear on the field/court for that season they could extend their eligibility past a year.

So in Paulus' case he's already used up his four years of eligibility playing basketball in the NCAA he couldn't go to Michigan and play BBall for them even if he wanted to. He'll be attending a year of grad school at Michigan which would translate to 1 year of football eligibility. If I'm right, and I don't think I am. Paulus could actually sign to Michigan to play football, take a redshirt year, push his eligibility ahead and play football NEXT season for the Wolverines.

This isn't too far of a stretch as the NCAA has allowed I believe one player, an Oklahoma Quarterback, can't remember his name. A sixth year of eligibility due to their "medical hardship" rule where an injury kept the kid out for a full season, thus extending him further in eligibility, after he used his red shirt year as well.

Apparently its confirmed hes going to Michigan... and apparently will get a shot at starting, too. Per Rotoworld, whos usually very reliable.

Former Duke point guard Greg Paulus will join Michigan's football team and be given an opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job this fall.
Paulus, an All-American quarterback in high school, will graduate from Duke in June. He has one year of football eligibility and will enroll as a graduate student at Michigan. Paulus recent worked out for the Packers.

My coaches were calling me, they called me like three times this morning before I even saw it, but I don’t know if they saw it on TV before I did and just wanted to tell me the truth. It’s hard. I can’t give you a word on it. I’m not worried about it, a kid like that was good in high school, but it’s nearly impossible to come back to this level and play. It might be possible, but not in the QB position. You have to know too much. You have to know the speed of the game.

If it happens, it happens. I still highly doubt he’s coming. It would be impossible.

I talked to (Michigan) Coach (Rich) Rod(riguez) and he said (Paulus) doesn’t know if he wants to play football or be a basketball coach at Duke or coach football. He doesn’t know yet. I might not be getting the whole story from my coaches, but there’s no final word.

Nate Hybl, but he's far from the first or last to be granted a 6th year. Kirsten Pittman started at DE for LSU the last two years but was also a freshman who played a lot on the 03 National Championship squad. He missed two years with 4 separate injuries (two ligaments, broken ankle and a torn achilles) so got to play 6 years.

But that is a medical redshirt. Paulus only gets one season of eligibility per the rule he is taking advantage of.
