Hasselbeck
Jus' bout dat action boss
Well some interesting moves have taken place this week.. the biggest being the move of a certain quarterback.
What did you think Jay Cutler was the only QB to make news this week? Get out of here.
Anyway.. this mock will be different than my last version in that I will .. for whatever reason.. project trades and add an extra round. I'll also add commentary free of charge so Dave doesn't have to cut and post my mock on my premium page.
Enjoy.

1. Detroit Lions
QB Matthew Stafford - Georgia
I believe the Lions will realize passing on Stafford at #1 only to address their need at QB later on in this draft is not in their best interests and take the Georgia product to be their franchise guy. Lion fans do have every reason to believe this pick will fail, like basically everyone of them have aside from Calvin Johnson .. but Stafford could be a very productive NFL quarterback if his supporting cast is decent. Two factors play a major role into this pick, marketability (which Stafford will bring) and the fact the quarterback class drops significantly in talent after Josh Freeman has his name called sometime later in the first round.
2. St. Louis Rams
OT Jason Smith - Baylor
In my opinion Smith is clearly the best tackle in this draft. The rest of the offensive linemen in the draft, particularly at tackle, have significant questions looming over them.. but Smith seems to be the safest pick of the group. He has a tremendous upside and is very athletic for a man his size. There are reasons why he has drawn comparisons to future Hall of Famer Walter Jones, and the Rams will see that here.
3. Kansas City Chiefs
OLB Brian Orakpo - Texas
Orakpo would be a DE in your conventional 4-3 set, but for the Chiefs and their 3-4 scheme Orakpo will be upright and play the same role Bertrand Berry did for Clancy Pendergast in Arizona. The Chiefs will be tempted to take Aaron Curry here, but Orakpo is a better fit for what they are lacking on defense - a pass rusher.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Seattle)
WR Michael Crabtree - Texas Tech
As my heart shatters into 1000 pieces, the Seahawks elect to move down 4 spots with the WR deprived Jacksonville Jaguars who quickly snatch up the best WR in the draft in Michael Crabtree. Larry berades me with harassing PM's as I disappear from VSN for 3 days..
But seriously, this is a move that makes so much sense, I could very well see it happening. With Cleveland and Oakland sitting ahead of Jacksonville in the draft.. there is a good chance both Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin would be off the board with their 8th pick.. and with the Seahawks addressing many needs in free agency, Tim Ruskell is allowed to pick up the Jags 8th overall, their second rounder and a late day 2 pick in the 2010 draft.
5. Cleveland Browns
LB Aaron Curry - Wake Forest
Should Curry fall to the 5th pick in the draft, the Browns would have a very hard time passing on the best defensive player in the draft by a wide margin. Despite Donte Stallworth killing a man and Braylon Edwards continually killing drives.. the Browns elect to lay the groundwork for repairing a defense that was completely abysmal in 2008.
6. Cincinnati Bengals
OT Eugene Monroe - Virginia
While BJ Raji could also be an option here, the Bengals get a fortunate break with Eugene Monroe falling into their laps. Carson Palmer finally gets a franchise caliber left tackle to protect him, and the Bengals offense - particularly their inept rushing attack - gets a big time jolt from this selection.
7. Oakland Raiders
DE Michael Johnson - Georgia Tech
Every year there is a pick (typically by the Raiders) that comes out of nowhere and shocks fans all over.
Michael Johnson could be that pick. Two reasons why: The Raiders need a defensive end and Michael Johnson is an incredible athlete who was projected to be a Top 5 pick at the beginning of the season but had a rough year and had his stock take a hit. However a strong showing at the pro day (where he ran a 4.49/40) has old man Al drooling and he takes the surprise pick here.
8. Seattle Seahawks (from Jacksonville)
QB Mark Sanchez - USC
Seattle could just as easily take Sanchez with the 4th overall pick, but by moving down 4 spots.. they lighten the size of his contract and pick up an extra pick to go along with it. Sanchez will sit behind Hasselbeck and Seneca Wallace for a year (and maybe two) while he picks up the offense before being the future starter in Seattle.
9. Green Bay Packers
DE/OLB Everette Brown - Florida State
The Packers are moving to a 3-4, and like the Chiefs they are in need of a playmaker on the outside. Everette Brown is just that, and could wind up being a perennial pro bowl type talent when it's all said and done.
10. San Francisco 49ers
WR Jeremy Maclin - Missouri
Despite the ageless Issac Bruce announcing he will return to the Niners next season, they still have a big need at that position. Josh Morgan appears to be a good player in the making, but Maclin has superstar type athleticism and just needs to polish some things to become a very good player at the next level.
11. Buffalo Bills
DE Aaron Maybin - Penn State
Maybin had a very strong showing at his Pro Day and it would not surprise me in the slightest to see him crack the Top 10 of the draft because of it. The Bills are looking for a solid defensive end and Maybin could definitely be that and a whole lot more.
12. Denver Broncos
DT B.J. Raji - Boston College
Now that Jay Cutler has gotten his ticket out of the Mile High city, embattled head coach Josh McDaniels can focus on rebuilding a defensive unit that was a major reason to the Broncos season unraveling after such a promising start. Raji would be an outstanding nose tackle in Mike Nolan's 3-4 scheme, and could anchor the Broncos defensive line for many years to come.
13. Washington Redskins
OT Andre Smith - Alabama
As much of a bust I think Andre Smith is shaping up to be, the fact he was at one point considered the best offensive tackle in the country may be enough to keep him in the 1st round. And couple that with the fact he could wind up being a very impressive left/right guard.. and Smith's value does improve in that regard. The Redskins make a lot of sense for Andre because they can afford to play him inside while he gets acclimated to the pro game (i.e. in shape).
14. New Orleans Saints
CB/S Malcolm Jenkins - Ohio State
Jenkins stock has gradually slid after a less than stellar performance at the Buckeyes Pro Day and the Scouting Combine.. and many believe he is better suited to play safety than he is playing corner. Well luckily for him the Saints need help at both positions.
15. Philadelphia Eagles (from Houston)
OT Michael Oher - Ole Miss
In a trade that nets the Texans both of the Eagles first round picks in 2009 (No. 21 and 28) for the Texans 15th overall and 2nd round pick (46th overall) the Eagles jump in front of the Chargers to take tackle Michael Oher. After losing Tra Thomas in free agency, the hole on the left side of the Eagles line significantly grew, leaving Andy Reid and co. no choice but to move up for the talented big fella. The Texans benefit from this move because they move down and pick up an extra first rounder, giving them the ability to continue to add talent to an already impressive young team.
16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from San Diego)
QB Josh Freeman - Kansas State
In a trade that nets the Chargers the Bucs 19th overall selection and their 3rd round pick in 2009 (81st overall) the Bucs leap frog the QB hungry New York Jets to take the last of the 1st round grade quarterbacks in Josh Freeman. Freeman would figure to at least compete with Luke McCown for the starting role in 2009 under new head coach Raheem Morris, while San Diego is able to pick up an extra 3rd round pick from the Bucs and move down in the draft.
17. New York Jets
RB Chris Wells - Ohio State
Boooooooooooo! That's how the Jets fans will take this pick. But when do they ever like the guy they select? Despite the Jets need for a WR, value plays a major role in this selection. Thomas Jones is 31 and Leon Washington is a nice complementary back.. but not an every down guy. Beanie Wells is that fun draft term "best player available" here and under Rex Ryan with a pretty average QB at the helm in Kellen Clemens, the Jets will rely on their ground game to get things going offensively.
18. Denver Broncos (from Chicago)
DE Tyson Jackson - LSU
The first player selected from trading Jay Cutler to the Bears is that of Tyson Jackson, a guy that fits the 3-4 defense almost perfectly and when paired with BJ Raji, gives Mike Nolan an outstanding looking defensive line to work with.
19. San Diego Chargers (from Tampa Bay)
LB Rey Maualuga - USC
Kind of like the Seattle-Jacksonville trade earlier, the Chargers move down and pick up an extra pick all while taking a guy they liked a lot the whole time. Maualuga rounds out an explosive Chargers linebacking corps and gets to stay in Southern California at the same time.
20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas)
DT Peria Jerry - Ole Miss
After trading Cory Redding to the Seahawks for Julian Peterson, the Lions opened up a need at defensive tackle, and while their need on the offensive line may be more dire.. the value of Jerry is greater than the tackles remaining on the board at 20. Jerry is an athletic tackle that can rush the passer and would figure to play the same role on the Lions defense that was assigned to Redding.
21. Houston Texans (from Philadelphia)
LB Brian Cushing - USC
Cushing has quietly put together an outstanding offseason and some believe he is the best LB prospect to come out of USC this season. Cushing has great size and speed and would be a welcome addition for the Texans defense.
22. Minnesota Vikings
WR Kenny Britt - Rutgers
The Vikings tried to land a WR in free agency and were unable to when Laverneaus Coles and T.J. Houshmandzadeh spurned the Vikings for other destinations. After trading for Sage Rosenfels in the offseason, Brad Childress would like to give him some targets to throw the ball to and Kenny Britt seems like a very good fit for the Vikings attack.
23. New England Patriots
DE/OLB Larry English - Northern Illinois
After trading Mike Vrabel to the Chiefs in the same deal that sent Matt Cassel packing, the Patriots draft the very underrated hybrid defensive specialist Larry English. English has a rare blend of size and speed and can be a major force in a Bill Belichick defense.
24. Atlanta Falcons
LB Connor Barwin - Cincinnati
Entering free agency the Falcons appeared to not have any glaring needs, that has since changed with the loss of Keith Brooking and Michael Boley. Barwin is another very underrated outside linebacker that can do a little bit of everything, but he is particularly good at rushing the passer.. something the defensive minded Falcons head man Mike Smith will use to his advantage.
25. Miami Dolphins
LB Clint Sintim - Virginia
Sintim, the product from Al Groh's Virginia Cavs, just screams "Parcells player" when you study him, so it makes sense for the Dolphins to draft him and plug him on the inside of their defense. Sintim could be for the Dolphins what Joey Porter was for them a year ago - a terror rushing the passer off the edge.. and an overall outstanding player.
26. Baltimore Ravens
WR Darrius Heyward-Bey - Maryland
A raw but freakishly athletic player, Heyward-Bey gives Joe Flacco a good deep threat and much needed weapon on offense. It probably didn't hurt his cause that he played very close to Baltimore either.
27. Indianapolis Colts
RB Knowshon Moreno - Georgia
Before you question my sanity.. consider Joseph Addai has already shown some problems with his durability...and consider the value of this pick should Moreno slide all the way down to 27. There are some concerns that Moreno (and now for that matter the aforementioned Addai) would have some problems being that 25 carry a game back, but with them splitting carries the Colts could have a very lethal rushing attack which makes Peyton Manning that much tougher to defend.
28. Houston Texans (from Philadelphia through Carolina)
S Louie Delmas - Western Michigan
With two average (at best) safeties on the roster already in Eugene Wilson and Will Demps, the Texans have a need at safety and Delmas fits the bill. Delmas has been a bit overlooked given where he played in college, but he has potential to be a very talented player at the next level.
29. New York Giants
WR Percy Harvin - Florida
The Giants are in need of a WR after Plaxico Burress was released and Harvin may possibly be the most athletic player at that position in the entire draft. Injury concerns aside, when healthy Harvin can be a game-changing type player and would complement Dominik Hixon and Steve Smith very well.
30. Tennessee Titans
DT Evander "Ziggy" Hood - Missouri
After losing Albert Haynesworth in free agency, the middle of the Titans defensive line has a pretty sizable void. Hood would instantly compete for the starting job left behind by Haynesworth, and could leave the Titans defense not missing a beat from their outstanding play a year ago.
31. Arizona Cardinals
DE Robert Ayers - Tennessee
Ayers is an intriguing prospect in that he didn't really come on until the Senior Bowl and offseason workouts, but was expected to be a much bigger part of the Vols defense than he actually was. However, the Cardinals need for a defensive end with Ayers potential staring at them here is enough reason for the defending NFC Champions to take a shot on him.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers
CB Vontae Davis - Illinois
The Steelers lost Bryant McFadden in free agency, and don't have much behind Ike Taylor at corner. Enter Vontae Davis, a very athletic and strong corner that could very well find himself starting on opening night against the Titans.
SECOND ROUND

5 37 Seattle - LB Clay Matthews - USC
6 38 Cincinnati - C Alex Mack - Cal
7 39 Seattle (from Jacksonville) - S Rashad Johnson - Alabama
8 40 Oakland - WR Derrick Williams - Penn State

14 46 Philadelphia (from Houston) - RB Lesean McCoy - Pitt
15 47 New England (from San Diego) - RB Donald Brown - UConn
16 48 Denver - CB Alphonso Smith - Wake Forest
17 49 Chicago - WR Ramses Barden - Cal Poly
18 50 Cleveland (from Tampa Bay) - CB/S Sean Smith - Utah
19 51 Dallas - G Duke Robinson - Oklahoma
20 52 N.Y. Jets - WR Juaquin Iglesias - Oklahoma
21 53 Philadelphia - TE Cornelius Ingram - Florida
22 54 Minnesota - OT Troy Kropog - Tulane
23 55 Atlanta - DT/DE Jarron Gilbert - San Jose State
