So much about putting a value on Tyrann Mathieu's NFL draft stock involves getting a grip on his past. Two weeks before the NFL draft, the rehabbing former Louisiana State cornerback is in the midst of a 10-stop, cross-country tour with a few more face-to-face chances to sell the notion that he can be trusted after marijuana derailed his college career, Jarrett Bell of USA Today reports.

Six teams down, four to go. Mathieu will be in the desert Friday visiting the Arizona Cardinals. On Monday, he'll meet with the Cincinnati Bengals. Sit-downs with the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks follow.

On each visit, Mathieu is wearing a suit and tie, hoping to send a not-so-subtle message that he's all business.

"This is his job interview," agent Patrick Lawlor said. "It's just a matter of presenting himself as a professional."

And distancing himself from his turmoil. Mathieu, 20, once known for his nickname, Honey Badger, repeatedly has declared he's been clean since October, when he was arrested on possession of marijuana charges after being booted off the team.

During one visit, Mathieu was asked how many drug tests he failed before he was suspended in college.

According to an assistant coach for the team, Mathieu responded: "I quit counting at 10. I really don't know."

The coach, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to comment about the evaluation, doesn't dump all of the blame on Mathieu. He points a finger at LSU.

"If he flunked 10 tests before they suspended him, it shows that he got no kind of help," the coach said.

Like the coach said, all the blame cant be placed on him. Apparently the culture around there allowed him to smoke all the dope he could with no repercussions. You should only warn a kid a couple of times before you have to take the belt to their ass to make em get the message.

Not everybody on campus is on scholarship to play sports. I don't see how that is even comparable.

I remember all the controversy when that picture of Jimmy Clausen holding a beer came out a few years back.. no one cares about the 40 other students not drinking.

Why should sports fans care about john doe drinking a beer when a school's star QB is pictured doing the same?

Since one guys got his scholarship on academic merit he's above having to take a drug test that athletes on scholarship are? Sounds like the definition of a double standard to me. Let's start testing the academics for adderall and see how many class valedictorians we find.

Not to mention this tests are pointless if someone can fail 10 of them anyway. Just a way to publicly sully the name of a kid for doing something that a ton of college kids do every day.

The tests are only as good as the enforcement.

Also, maybe I've been out of undergrad-college too long but academic scholarships generally aren't full free rides are they? I think the more money you are dumping into something the more likely you are to manage that investment more closely.

And L-O-fucking-L at the school's financial investment in these players. Excuse me for not feeling bad if a school has a football or basketball player who likes to smoke a little weed on athletic scholarship. Maybe the millions of dollars they make in gate revenue and TV deals on the backs of their free labor force of "student athletes" will help them sleep a little better at night.

I know most aren't but the bigger revenue producing sports are(basketball/football) so it makes sense that you at least test those players and generally speaking you have more scholarship money tied up in sports schollies than you do liberal arts academic money.

What I'm saying is the reality of the situation is that the school makes more of a financial investment there so the natural reaction is to manage that investment more closely. On top of that it becomes an image issue as well. Having a star football player popped for drugs is more damaging to the school than "Liberal Arts major caught smoking bowl outside KFC".

Notre Dame as well.


I don't really see it as a true double standard though. The investment is a different amounts so I don't think the situations are entirely equal and thus I see why they wouldn't be treated as such.
